Not that this will affect your opinion of the game (I have a soft spot for it, but even I admit it's style over substance), but you can totally jump. It's up, up+square. Jumping attack is up, up+triangle. There's not really any reason to do it, but it's in there. Also, tapping triangle a few times gets you an alternate version of your four specials with different properties. Mostly it's just stuff like alternate angles, but Keiya's red pentagram basically breaks the game. When it hits (which isn't hard, since it's fairly fast and goes under other projectiles), it instantly gives you a super crystal. Oh, and both versions hit downed opponents. Speaking of the crystals, aside from using it for supers, you can also burn one to do an unblockable attack. I'm not sure if it's the same attack for everyone, but they all have a move that can be powered up by holding the button. So I guess what I'm saying is even if they failed, they did try. There are moves for countering sidesteps and you can deflect projectiles and so on. The problem is you don't have to do most of it. That's the real reason I wanted an Evil Zone 2. So Yuke's could take another shot at it and come up with gameplay that matched the presentation.

I would totally be interested In a remake, with the same concept, each character having their own show and such, maybe add some more depth and such or just make it an action game and not a fighter, but still have the ability to choose from about 10 to 15 characters, and each with their own OVA which tells their story before the game started would be super cool.
@TheReflexWonderful9 жыл бұрын
As a fighting game system, it actually does an alright job if you don't mind having two buttons doing everything. The comparison to Smash Brothers is actually not terrible, with there being an Attack button (which is also responsible for throws) and a Special button. I say this as someone who finds most of the game's personality more than a little painful (and is a guilty pleasure, but, whatever). Something being glossed over is the fact that each character's three special moves also have a second variation (by double-tapping or holding Special) that adds depth to their use. That's why Danzaiver's Lightning Strike never hit in this video; they were constantly using the version that beats sidesteps but doesn't hit standing opponents. Of course there's some overlap, but you can absolutely say the same for specials in Smash. The fact that you can grab from any distance but only the close grab has low start-up is a nice touch, as is the parry mechanic that lets you start something or reflect projectiles. You can do single attacks out of dashes as a bait but they have a lot of commitment. There's always something you can be doing to threaten the opponent at any distance, and there's a lot more to the game than what's being suggested.

Honestly, I've kind of got to come to Evil Zone's defense on this one. It's one of the few times I've disagreed with the Zaibatsu cast, but I'll stand firm on it. The art style and feel of the game are very enjoyable, and the contrast of designs between all the different characters looks really great, as the Zaibatsu mentions. The Saturday Morning Anime introductions were also unique, and the cheesy voice acting actually helps the game more than it hurts. The animation and Supers are fluid, and are pleasing to the eye. As for the game's mechanics itself, I'm a bit divided on it. Unlike fighting games like Street Fighter, Soul Calibur or Super Smash Brothers here, there's very little variety to the game other than it's story mode. You can get like two additional costumes for each character, but that's about it; it's very basic, very minimal at best. The gameplay itself is pretty much as describe, it's just a few buttons with very little strategy (again, as opposed to Smash or Street Fighter) taking place in the actual experience. That said, here's why my opinion with the game is divided; because I usually suck at fighting games. I consider myself a good (but not stellar) player at Super Smash, Killer Instinct and Soul Calibur, but very little else can I hold any ground in. I'm just barely passable in Mortal Kombat, I blow at Street Fighter, Tekken, Persona Arena, Blazblue, etc. I'm not even good at MVC3. Evil Zone (along with SS, KI, and SC) is just one of the few fighting games I'm good at. Plus, at least I can get the ability to recover in Evil Zone and not be countered into infinity like I would with MVC3 with one tiny mistake. I'm better with the combo system in Evil Zone, and it's not something that takes a crap load of practice for me to learn; it's easy and dependable, like Super Smash, but (again), with a lot less variety to it. So to rap it up, is this the absolute WORST fighting game out there like Pat makes it out to be? No, there are far worse games out there in terms of that genre, like Kabuki Warriors, Tao Feng: Fist of the Lotus, or worst of all, Shaq Fu. Evil Zone isn't really a great fighting game, it's just a decent one. There's a lot of unfortunate wasted potential with it, but at least it's fun and controls easy. Sometimes I don't want a fighting game that has me getting combo-ed infinitely, there are times where I just want to relax and beat something up without worrying about specifics. I think it joins fighting games like Mace: The Dark Age, Bio Warriors, Flying Dragon and War Gods honestly; they're not the best or most intricate fighters, but they are fun to play. I dunno, is that all just me? Have I lost my talent to be flippant and desirable?

I hate so much at how right Woolie and Pat are in this regard. The characters and style of this game have so much charm, and just watching it play make it look pretty interesting, but when you actually pick up the controller and play it yourself it all changes. I'm not gonna say it is the worst fighter ever, because I've seen some shit, but it is definitely very bad. More than anything it was disappointing, because there were so many things they did right in this game, but you will never see any of it because the game play itself was so detrimental.

Black metal fact: the band Mayhem is basically the band you're talking about. Among other things, they'd use impaled pig or sheep's heads as props, and one of their vocalists (Per Yngve Ohlin, aka Dead) would cut himself onstage with broken glass and hunting knives. He later committed suicide by slitting his wrists and throat with a knife, then shot himself in the head with a shotgun. One of their guitarists who went by the name Euronymous took pictures of his corpse, and even used one as the cover for one of their bootleg albums. Later, Euronymous was stabbed to death by the band's bassist, a guy by the name of Varg Vikernes, aka Count Grishnackh. Euronymous was stabbed 23 times: two in the head, five in the neck, and sixteen in the back. Vikernes went to prison for fifteen years after unsuccessfully trying to claim self-defense; he smiled when the verdict was read. He's currently living in France under the name Louis Cachet, where he continues to espouse neo-Nazi, white supremacy, and survivalist bullshit.

This is my favourite fighting game of all time I still play it religiously with a friend! I enjoy this way more then most modern fighting games simply because it's easy and fun. Why does a fighting game have to be complicated in order to achieve some form of greatness? It's simple, fun and to the point. This was back when you played games with your friends in your room and beating the hard A.I was enough of a challenge and you didn't have to spend hours learning meta and practicing combos in order to stay on ladder. This game has great music, characters, it's fun, fast and to the point I personally believe there is a bigger element of psy play because of it's simplicity the fact anyone can learn this easily meana there are loads of opportunities for reactive gameplay which the excitement of most fighting games anyway without the need to study it. Plus you remember everything about it because it's simple and everyone can enjoy it without spending loads of time trying to remember ridiculous combos (casuals) and not be able to pull off those awesome moves because they are too much of a pain to remember then execute. I do agree though that the simplicity separates them from advanced fighting games like Street Fighter but playing most fighting games at a high level takes a lot of dedication, however with this you don't need that. Personally I cannot wait to see a sequel. Also your referring to Dead from Mayhem (Nor) who shot himself in the head with a shotgun due and when his body was discovered by Mayhem's guitarist, Euronymous (Øystein Aarseth) the first thing he did was take a photo of it which was their next album cover. Anyway yeah, rant over. Hail Satan :D

Evil zone is about technique, not complexity

after reading that this game •IS• good if you know all the controls, i want to try it out. Can you explain what’s meant by “technique”? thanks

Count me as one of the people who love this game. Also Woolie, you can totally jump - you press up up triangle or up up square. Oh yeah, and there _was_ a planned sequel for this. I saw an article about it in an old gaming magazine, but I guess Yuke's changed their minds on making it. I was legit sad.
@JeedyJay9 жыл бұрын
This really just looks like the kind of fighting game that you can't play like any other fighting game - like, it's *super* idiosyncratic in how it must be approached.

Why is sad Woolie face one of the cutest things that can ever be brought out of this whole venture?

As opposed to the usual hour, this fight game video is only half an hour. I'm going in expecting the worst if they could only handle half an hour of it.
@ghostfear20119 жыл бұрын
I'll tell you. It controls really badly. It looks pretty for it's era but in the technical department it's awful.

I'd rather have bad gameplay and good personality than the opposite (Virtua Fighter) I've played this game, it isn't good, but the Zaibatsu is doing a really bad job explaining why. It comes down to them really caring about high level play systems 95% of players don't give a shit about. It's like those guys who have strong opinions about which tires to use on your car. They just sound insane to regular people.
@madelinewoof75449 жыл бұрын
The complaint is legit, as good and cool these animations look and are, pressing the same button over and over again just isn't fun.

Lurdiak No, not like Smash. Smash has three buttons and you can jump. And it has a bunch of different characters who are insanely different from one another barring a few clone characters.

I know, I know, no1 curr and all that. But they can't complain about its defenders when they make it really easy to defend. Complain that there's no jump button, every character has an aerial attack they never use. Complain that there are almost no moves, only use like half of them. Complain that there's no strategy, it's just button-mashing, and while there isn't much, they completely ignore what basic strategies exist (stunning someone and then just standing still while they recover? In what game is that a good idea?). Pat repeatedly says he's an expert because he's played it so much, then constantly uses attacks that are out of range and acts like it's the game's fault they don't hit. Evil Zone's not great, I'm not going to pretend it is. But at least be fair. I'm one of those "enjoys EZ, doesn't like fighting games" people they were talking about, and I'm total shit at them! Which means I would never load up a fighting game, slap some buttons, and then denounce it as shit because I didn't do well. EZ is an important game for me. It was one of the first games I ever got, because it was cheap and we were poor. I played it all the way through, I unlocked everything, and then I kept playing it. I played it until the disc got so scratched up I couldn't play it anymore. And when it did, I cried, because it was a gift from someone who isn't here anymore, and because it was my sort of introduction to video games, especially those that weren't strictly one-player. It came with another game people unfairly shit-talk, DarkStone. I got so many hours of enjoyment out of both of them. I know I'm not the only one. But if KZbin had been a thing back then, I probably wouldn't have bothered trying them, which means I probably wouldn't have bothered trying other games. An entire section of my life just would not have happened. TL;DR: Don't let random assholes convince you the things you enjoy are crap. If they made you happy, even for a little while, they weren't crap.
