It was a similar thing with the Pokemon anime, where you love it at first, but it sucks when you come back to it. People stopped watching him around the time Game Grumps got popular I think, that's when I remember people starting to lean towards more podcast like lets plays instead of hyper exaggerated personas. After that, I remember Toby getting into some drama trouble at the height of DramaAlert's popularity, sexual misconduct was the reason I think. I've never really trusted or watched drama channels like DramaAlert, so I don't know if those rumors were true or if they were just spread for views.

It may have been a victim of the over-hype in some regards, but yeah, I think Amnesia still holds up as a pretty great horror game. There have been countless clones of it but a lot of them seem to forget that Amnesia had good pacing and strong atmosphere, not just a dark copy-paste corridor with an invincible monster that insta-kills you.

That's called bad writing. What should have been done to both justify the game play and Daniel's actions is have Daniel be a broken mess that wanted to just forget so he does so and than have the new Daniel go through the castle and learn all the things he did and become so full of rage he wants to kill Alex. All you would have to do really is remove the note that Daniel left for himself telling him he needs to kill Alex. That note is completely counter-intuitive of what Daniel ends up doing by making himself forget before he solves his problem.

@@C24U_ He needed to forget to also nerf the presence coming after him. It was a necessity because he was running out of time. It was either risk going after Alexander and get killed before he could do it or sacrifice his memories for more time on the clock. He was also a confused mess after erasing his memories. He would've been a vulnerable sitting duck if he did that a couple rooms away from his goal. He needed to allow himself time to recover and figure the situation out.

Part of the issue with copyrights and Lovecraft is that Lovecraft basically let anyone borrow from his work when he was alive. And a big part of holding a copyright is that you have to defend it. Since he had no issue letting people just plop the necronomicon into their own stories or whatever, it would be hard to defend Lovecraft-based copyrights and trademarks in court.

Amnesia certainly popularized the hidey-scary walking simulators -- But the same guys made a very similar trilogy of games before it called "Penumbra". It had all the same mechanics with not being able to look at the monsters for long and hiding in dark corners, physics stuff for the doors and other objects if I recall correctly. I remember challenging myself when I played through this game to find every single tinderbox (but not use any) and the only oil I could use for my lantern was what I got from the oil casks scattered throughout the castle. If I ran out of oil then I was SOL because I couldn't use the bottles of oil I found, just like the tinderboxes. It definitely made my run more interesting and stressful because I had to be sparing with my only mobile light source.

What's so perfect about the enemy design in Amnesia is how they collaborate with the lighting of the game. Pat is right in that when you get a good look at the monsters (especially the grunts) they look kind of goofy, but when the lighting is low all you can make out is basic shapes and a little bit of detail, so your imagination handles the rest. That's where the terror of the enemies in this game comes from. Also the sounds they make while roaming around are pretty creepy.

It bothers me how Matt searches drawers in games. Just open them from bottom to top so you don't need to close each one right after to be able to see the contents of the next one. It effectively cuts the actions needed in half.
