I also hate the "you can't do anything" horror game style, it just makes everything tiresome. Violence is a traumatizing thing, and fighting is scary as hell. You just need to not make the fighting feel like an action game, give it weight, and clumsiness and danger. Receiver's one of my favorite survival horror games ever simply because it makes everything about guns complicated which scares the shit out of you when you have to defend yourself. You didn't have a fear mechanic or lose because of a dice roll, you fucked up at using a gun cuz you were scared. And that's great!

None of that changes that loading round by round and having limited magazines that you personally have to manage makes running empty very stressful. The guns are very powerful but are more complicated to use and reload than Resident Evil, enhancing both the player's ability to defend themself and the fear factor. I strongly disagree that enemies rarely spawn in groups exceeding two. The outdoor stairs areas are pretty rough, especially if drones in other areas can see you.

The only other ancient religion that I found mentions the number 7 is the pharaonic one, who considered 7 a "god" number (and there is no mention of astrology related to that either). Abrahanic religion does not consider 7 a direct representation of god, the concept used for it is completeness and perfection. The relation it has to the concept of god is an indirect one. And the abrahanic religion in particular features a complete lack of reliance on celestial bodies to explain it's concept of god and celestial beings (sun, moon, etc. are still used for symbolism but at no point they say X celestial body is an angel or that your life will be all shits and giigle if you are born under an eclipse or anything similar.) So for all we know the ancint egyptians could have picked up this simbology for the number 7 from the hebrews and not the other way around. It is very disconcerting when people try to make science work in a different way when it pertains to religion. If you have different cultures with no direct connection mention a similar event Isn't it more plausible that there is some truth to it, rather than the unlikely scenario that people from different cultures startied sharing stories and from all the different stuff described in each one they decided to appropriate the same elements each time? To give you an example of what i mean, the old testament mentions that when moses and company left egypt god put a column of smoke and fire to guide them. Well it so happens that roughly around that timeframe geological records show that the one of the largest volcanic eruptions in human history took place, and it so happens tha from that distance it would look like a column of smoke during the day, and one of fire during the night. (this eruption was from the Thera volcano, the information is available in wikipedia if you give a shit.)

Nemesis and the whole Dino Crisis crew are some of the scariest things on the menu to me, because that extra second of "Maybe I can take it" can be just enough hesitation to get yourself mulched, and they just generally feel more like monsters than wandering failstates.

Having a weapon can just as well backfire and make you more confident or focused on things that are not connected to the horror. Expedient crafting systems remind more of camping simulators than horror these days. Putting more emphasize on "survival" than horror. Stress =/= scary. Player agency can extend beyond combat. Look at the Silent Hill games. The combat was terrible and made you mostly feel helpless. Complete garbage. Yet it was extremely scary to many, because of the psychological elements, monster designs and atmosphere. Managing healing items and finding your way around the town were much more essential than being able to swing around a club or shooting a shitty gun. When all you can think about are combos, how many hits each enemy takes and what kind of ammunition counters what, you just feel like you are in any other Beat 'em Up or Shooter with a horror theme.

Regarding fighting in a horror game: I think Haunting Ground did it very well. You CAN fight, but not very effectively. Fiona has a really dinky kick and a highly limited number of throwing weapons, plus the ability to kind of control Hewie to attack. Your first choice is to hide, but if backed into a corner, you can still sometimes flail your way out and if you're feeling super ballsy, beating down your stalker can net you unique rewards.
