Got to watch Roberts race dirt track and miles here in California. He was the best at any type of racing. Knew when he went to Europe that he would win. Just didn't expect it in the first year. He is and always will be Americas greatest motorcycle racer. And equal to anybody in the world.

Meanwhile people are freaking out over ABS, traction control, Aero, ECU settings, fuel injection, slipper clutches, fuel pumps… “Oh, the agony!” I saw the newer debut of the R9… luckily I was with a few older others in their spry 60’s. They said “Long gone are the days of changing jets in the garage… iPad generation ruined it for us old folk. I’m going to spend a weekend reading about the settings if I were to buy, set it, and never touch again.” There’s too many distraction today!

I’m 28 years old. First bike was a CB360T. Second was a CB750K6. Third was a CB550F1. Fourth was an R3 fitted by a TZ inspired fairing by GG Retro. Fifth is a SV650Y, and Sixth, finally, is an RD400F Daytona Special. I’m a millennial old soul, and about to do my first track day at Chuckwalla. I restored and build every bike I owned. I’ve been to Japan, and excited… King Kenny was nearly 32… there is still time to become a great rider. In my short 7 years of riding I’ve put 60,000 miles on bikes… over my cars. This is the most exhilarating race I’ve ever seen over modern F1 or Moto GP. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. This year I’m going to Chuckwalla Valley Raceway… while my misses is pregnant with my child. It is never too late!

Kenny Roberts is the all-time king of motorcycle racing. No one else comes close. No one to this day raced better or as long as King Kenny. Motorcycle racing is lucky. Not many sports have such a cut-and-dry all-time champion, and you wouldn't expect it in such a sport, where the difference between winning and losing is so razor sharp.

I grew up riding two wheelers in rural central Florida in the 60's/70's competing in everything from Enduros to trials and flat track and earned an AMA Expert/Pro license for 125cc Motocross as a 17 yo Jr. in H.S. I had made the decision to hang up my racing boots and prepare for Engineering College my Sr. year but got a call from my sponsor (Island Yamaha, in Merritt Island Fl.), who said they had purchased a new TZ350 and were taking it to Sebring for checkout and would I like to turn some laps? Of course I jumped at the chance, though at that time I had never ridden even a fast street bike in anger on pavement. Turns out they had me and two other guys there to turn laps. I took to the TZ immediately with it reminding me so much of motocross on my ported YZ125 only on pavement. I was the only person who never stalled it and I had the fastest lap times. I had a great time and figured that was that. They then called my Dad and asked if we'd like to go to Daytona in a few months for Race Week in '75 to run two or three amateur preliminary races. It brought with it more danger than motocross so my Mom and Dad talked about it for a few days and said I could do it with the only caveat that Dad would be the chief mechanic and have final say on anything track related (My Dad was a Rocket Engineer at The Cape and was my chief wrench on all my motocross bikes, including porting and tuning and even manufacturing down swept pipes for all my motocross bikes). So I raced in two of the amateur 350cc races, taking 3rd place in the second fifty miler. The AMA officials then notified us that with my 2nd place finish I had earned enough points to get my Expert/pro license for 250cc/350cc Road Race and thus I was eligible for the 200 mile race. Qualifying had already taken place but we were told if we paid the $250 entry fee we would go off with the "back markers" at the back of the grid. The race went off with 45 entries and I started 42nd. I held my own in the infield but the 500's and 750's were much faster in the high banks (we had the TZ geared to run 141 mph in 6th gear on a flat surface at redline but I believe the factory TZ750's were doing 190 so I was at a big disadvantage). We had lots of down time in the pits with problems changing tires and brake pads and sprockets and then we lost 6th gear about 3/4 way through, so I had to run the high banks in 5th gear, but we did finish in 24th place, which may have been third or fourth from last place. My second coolest story about the race was the start, where I used my motocross racing start skills to pass about half the pack into turn one. but my coolest story was somewhere into the race coming down the front straight I was starting to think about finding my braking spot for turn 1 and a certain yellow #1 plated TZ750 comes by me (this was the first of several times he lapped me) and immediately starts braking. I knew exactly who it was and thought cool, I'll follow Kenny through the infield and see what I can learn. i was right in him through turn one then he pulled me pretty good through turn two but coming into the hairpin it flashed that I had the lighter bike i should be able to out brake him and just maybe get my front tire in front of him at the apex and possibly make a pass. Just as my brain is computing everything, I see Kenny going way outside the perfect line and he slides the big TZ 750 around getting it pointed way across to a totally different apex and is on the throttle hard sliding it probably 200 or 300 feet across the entire track and then nails it and is gone. I kind of chuckled to myself, yeah you learned a lot from following Kenny, you learned he is Bad Man and you need to concentrate on differential calculus.
