Lemme Guess, you're a Broncos fan. Al definitely had his flaws but to say he had no redeeming qualities as a man is retarded. Al Davis had one of the greatest runs in NFL history, probably top 3 all time along with Bill Walsh and Bill Belichick.

Funny how those closest to him (Madden, Otto, Willie Brown, Flores, etc) SWEAR by the man. He was cutthroat. I defy you to name me a successful man that ever wasn't on some level. The difference was, Al wasn't dishonest about it. As a black man in America, I know I'd much rather there were more Al Davis'...men who let you know how they felt on Front Street as opposed to a lot of men who smile and say the right things and then go behind your back to try and keep you subjugated.

Tom Flores was a terrific HC after taking over the Raiders from John Madden. I also think Madden was very envious of Flores success as evidenced in this clip. He was also clearly disappointed that his favorite team got a total a** whipping in this SB. He was noticeably low energy (actually in shock) during the broadcast and I loved it. I got so sick of him constantly gushing over the Redskins and John Riggins back then
@kidmack11213 жыл бұрын

@@mhlaw229 I have to pay attention to that now. Good catch! Noticing his funky attitude in the post game. Are you in or from the Bay Area? I remember hearing a life long Raider's fan (she used to keep all of her PRO Game Day programs in her truck so she could get the Raider autographs when she ran into them around the East Bay) in my reserve unit tell me on Conference Championship Sunday January 1982 that Madden already resented the success of the '81 Forty Niners because of all the support they picked up in NorCal. I never forgot that. I wonder what his favorite team was when he was a kid in Daly City?... I'd bet it wasn't the Forty Niners...

I totally disagree! John Madden was a raider to the bone and wanted the raiders to win. It’s similar to Aikman calling a cowboys game though and occasionally Aikman will try to go overly praiseful of the opposition. Btw I don’t think Aikman should call Cowboys games but I digress back to Madden. Madden loved Al Davis, Madden was still involved with the Raider nation long after he was coach. If Madden was giddy and happy after the victory he likely would’ve been done as a broadcaster. The blowback would’ve been overwhelming. So therefore he had to be respectful.

Dadsoldtapes - do you have the portion of the pregame video from SB XVIII where Jimmy The Greek made his prediction? Because he knew what was coming, Jimmy was gleefully "lit" when he blindsided Cross and Musburger. As they stared at him in disbelief like he had eight heads, it's really quite priceless.

It seems silly for Al to mention Tom Flores at the time as one of the great coaches ever, but he had just finished his fifth season, was 47-26 with two championships (NO OTHER Super Bowl era head coach other than ironically George Seifert...the only other eligible coach with two Super Bowls not likely to make the Hall, has that resume out the gate). The Raiders seemed built to challenge for at least another championship before the decade ended. Flores would lead them to an 11-5 and 12-4 record the next two seasons and definitely should get more credit for that from from 1979-1985 than he does for his last two years and in a pretty hopeless situation in Seattle. That Seahawks run is probably keeping him out of the Hall of Fame and it's a shame.

At that time he had a winning record against all the greatest coaches at that time. People also don't realize that Flores was the man who called " Ghost to the Post ". Not only was he a great coach in the field, but he was a great players coach. My uncle played during that time. He said whenever they looked over to their sideline, they were amazed by how diverse the coaching staff was, etc especially for an 80s team. Tom Flores was 83-53 with Oak/LA Raiders reg. season/ 8-3 playoffs with 2 SuperBowl wins. His record with Seattle 14-34 in 3 seasons may have hurt his chances for possible induction into the Hall of Fame. Another coach this happened to was George Seifert with 98-30 reg season record with 49ers, 10-5 playoffs with 2 superbowl wins. His 16-32 record w/ Carolina is probably keeping him out of the Hall of Fame as well.

That could’ve been a great Super Bowl! Or If Bo Jackson didn’t got hurt and if we didn’t lost 51-3 vs the Bills we could’ve had a SB between the L.A. Raiders vs N.Y. Giants it would’ve been called “The Hip Hop Bowl!” Because I think it was at the time when West Coast Rap & East Coast Rap was popular at the time.
