The costume that he was wearing was one of the ones worn by Christopher Reeve. The symbol on his chest gives it away.

Turns out he was replaced for the second season because the producers were not enamored by his portrayal of superboy. This is the actor I have remembered playing that role my whole life.

No, that's not the reason. John Newton was promised more money for doing dangerous stunts etc. even though he had a contract. They went back on their word and didn't give him more money, and he balked. So they fired him. Mr. Newton later said he wishes he would have honored his contract despite being promised more money, but he was young and a bit arrogant at that time. He was fine as Superboy and his replacement wasn't any improvement acting wise over John.

The series is available on Tubi, among with many other classics of the 70s-90s! I wished they did the retelling of the origin in the 80s Superboy series but I guess it worked the way the producers planned it! Still though he was the lead man and his salary negotiation should’ve been accepted instead of replacing him…that might’ve stung the actor making him feel his performance wasn’t good enough but my in my opinion they just didn’t want to pay him more money!

Didnt like him as superboy, good looking guy but he wasn't as good as Christopher Gerard. Gerard was closer to Christopher Reeve.

Ich habe mich dauernd gefragt, warum ich Ihn lieber mochte, als Gerard. Ich musste gerade feststellen, dass er meinem Cousin sehr ähnlich war. Auch in Mimiken. Und mein Cousin war mir ein Vorbild. John Newton war damals im richtigen Alter und sah nicht ganz so nerdig aus wie es Gérard später machte. Was John in den 80ern machte, war ein Vorgeschmack darauf, wie ein Superboy auch dargestellt werden kann. Denn sein Clark sah nicht minder attraktiv aus als sein Superboy. Ganz anders bei Gérard. Leider. Aber ich denke, da hatte weniger Gerard als mehr der Produzent oder Regisseur dran schuld.

Yeah it probably was the producers' wanting Clark to be nerdy. Thankfully Gerard's Clark changed a lot in season 3 and became a lot better.
