Something I noticed that I haven’t heard anyone else talk about is Mariano’s nose still being broken after the failed engagement. The whole family is right there, including Julieta, why wouldn’t she just give him some food and heal his nose? My guess is that her gift wasn’t working at that point either, just like Luisa’s. Small detail, but fascinating!

Mariano and his mother ran out of the house and into the village after the failed dinner. Julieta and Augistin were trying to comfort Isabela and Luisa, who were a wreck after what happened. After that Alma goes to talk to them in the village, while everyone else is trying to find Mirabel. It is immediately after this that his nose is broken a second time (while he is still in the village) and then Casita collapses. Julieta was separated from him, because she was in Casita, and Mariano was in the village. After the hysterical children had been calmed, I'm sure she would have gone to give him something to heal him. There really just wasn't much time between the dinner and the drama, and they were not in the same place.
@ister25072 жыл бұрын
@@DogFlamingoXIIIThis. But I would also add, that after the "ruined" proposal the Madrigals weren't in full control of their gifts. Already at the end of the dinner you can see Camillo not able to control his shapeshifts anymore and changing randomly and partially, weak Luisa, Dolores holding hands by hear ears, apparently being hurt by the noise she could probably no longer "rule out", tia Pepa causing a massive storm and Isa hitting Mariano right in the nose with her flower (even though that was what she probably really wanted deep inside, still she had no control over it whatsoever). Taking it all into account one could safely assume that Julietta's power is also in jeopardy and trying to use it could break even more havoc so it was best not to even give it a try (what if she would poison Mariano instead). The only brief moment when things were back normal was when Mirabel was bonding with Isa but we all know how it ended...

What I'm always curious about is the bottle [and crate of bottles] Julieta goes to get after the house falls. We see a village bringing it up to her [we see a few of them immediately after the house falls but no attention is brought to them, and we know it's not Camillo because he can't shape shift] - they talk about her cooking being the healing thing but it seems like she went for a bottle of medicine or something to bring to her daughter [it's never clear what it is but it looks too small to be a drink] - so does that mean that there are other sources of medicine/healing for the village other than Julieta, or has she found a way to make medicines outside of her food powers to help when she's unavailable for one reason or another?
@Nerdywolf18 Жыл бұрын
@@Crow_SmithJulietta is easily the most level headed person in the movie. She, along with her husband, are the only ones to treat Mirabel with the respect she deserves as a human being, being able to see her value outside of the magical abilities granted by the miracle. She knows that a person's value does not cone from magical abilities, so to me it would make sense that Julietta would also recognize that her powers are not what give her value. She seems like the type to be continuously be working on and improving herself, probably learning new skills and finding alternative ways to help people in case something happens to her powers. Julietta uses her powers to the benefit of those around her, but also realizes that in a world where these mystical powers exist, and are only wielded by a small select group of people, nothing is certain, and she prepared for this. This is also a value that she instilled into her children, as we see Luisa works out every day despite her insane magical strength, and after everyone's powers are gone, we see that Isabella seems to have some knowledge of how to grow plants outside of her magic. Finally Mirabel, despite having no powers, is clearly a very capable person, showing a variety of talents developed in an attempt to be useful in her own way. Sewing, crafting, decorating, among others. She is also quite physically capable, with feats such as reaching Bruno vision cave, surviving when said cave is flooded with sand, and the most impressive being holding a grown man with one arm while holding herself by a pipe with the other. She only dropped Bruno out of surprise from the rat in his sleeve, not weakness. We don't see any real feats like this from the other characters, as they primarily rely on their talents instead of personal growth and talent. Julietta taught her kids to be strong outside of their powers, and it served them well when those powers were gone.

I personally think the Bruno dancing in "We Don't Talk About Bruno" is actually Camillo getting ready for his part. The only time we actually see Bruno's eyes go green is when he uses his powers (if you watch the scene where Mirabel finds Bruno in the walls, his eyes never actually flash green, the light flashes past his eyes) which he mentioned he hasn't used since his last vision. Plus every time Camillo shifts into Bruno, his eyes turn green.

Another Small Detail: Each of the powers of the Madrigal triplets (Julieta, Pepa and Bruno) is tangental to the passage of time. Julieta's gift is that of healing, which reverts one to a past healthier state. Pepa's emotions effect the present weather conditions. Lastly, Bruno is able to see into the future. This also lines up with the order of their birth, Julieta being first born, Pepa the middle child and Bruno being the youngest. To a certain extent this even goes further into their personalities and characters. Julieta is the closest tied to the family's traditions and strives for her daughters to find their place in it. Pepa's intense emotions have a tendency to change from moment to moment, rarely lingering for too long. Bruno's always worrying about his own 'bad luck' and constantly tries to curb it with throwing salt and knocking on wood; worrying about what the future holds for him.

Regarding the hug, I think we see young Alma because that's the version of Abuela Alma that Mirabel needs to embrace. She's always seen her as Abuela, the stern, in-control head of the family. But she needs to see the traumatized young woman who lost everything, and clung to what little she had - three children and a miracle. Part of Alma was still frozen in that moment, and couldn't move on until she finally faced her pain and had it acknowledged.

Not sure if y'all have covered what the term "madrigal"means musically. Essentially it's a song with multiple verses that stand on their own melodically, but also combine together at the same time to make something bigger than it's combined pieces. "We don't talk about Bruno" is, musically speaking, a madrigal. It also points to the central theme of the movie, that the family as a whole is greater than the individual people that make it up. They are all unique and able to stand on their own, but they are also all bolstered and supported more by the addition of the other pieces of the puzzle.

At the end of the movie, when la Casa Madrigal is rebuilt and the doorknob inserted, a new carving appears on the front door. This carving features all of the members of the family, including spouses. Every character's eyes are closed. Due to this, I'm not sure that there is a magical correlation between a Dolores and Bruno's eyes being open and how aware they are of the family's trauma. If being aware of the family's trauma is the only qualification for having open eyes on a door, every character's eyes would be open on the family door. There might be a symbolic story-telling connection, but not an in-world, magical one. But as far as the magic is concerned, it's more likely related to the nature of their gifts, Dolores with heightened senses, Bruno with the ability to "see" into the future.

When considering Tonito's door, I always thought that perhaps his childlike appearance in the door was an indication that - though his gift COULD be MADE to conform to the utilitarian standards the rest of the family have- at its heart, this gift is inherently different. This gift is about WONDER. The wonder of new experiences, the wonder of a child. As he grows into a man, that aspect of his gift would never change. It would always be less the utilitarian gift that could ease Louisa's burden by merely telling the donkeys to go home - and more the Doctor Doolittle style of always having something new to learn. We grow up. We learn what we need to and we settle into a rhythm. It's the rare person with childlike wonder that seeks more. Also, I can't help but notice this parallels to the beginning where Abuela Alma says, "You are a wonder Mirabelle." Couple that with little Antonio literally stating to Mirabelle, "I NEED you" and I just can't put this bone down. I'll continue to gnaw at it until I've consumed the entirety of it. At first, watching this theory, I thought, "That's so sweet. Mirabelle seeing him as he is and accepting him as he is has manifested as something beautiful. I like this better..." But the more I thought about it and gnawed at that bone the more I realized that my theory and your own are not mutually exclusive of each other. They walk hand in hand just as Antonio (who previously had to be coaxed by the "wonder" Mirabelle to feel hope and wonder under a bed where he hid) and Mirabelle walked hand in hand together to relieve Antonio's gift. Mirabelle's full and unconditional acceptance of Antonio - including his fears which she didn't just sweep aside- helped him accept himself. And himself, and his gift, is wonderful. He's not a tool. The moments leading up to Mirabelle's ceremony were punctuated by her repeating, "Make my family proud" while Antonio had gotten the admonition he needed from a different source and already knew he had nothing to prove to at least one person. "I know you're an animal person. - and I made this..." she said. As you said, her eyes were open. She saw the boy. And his gift reflected not just her acceptance of him but his own acceptance of her assessment - and the freedom to just be HIMSELF. Beyond expectation, beyond duty, beyond utility. Okie, I've prattled on and on and honestly I could continue... but I think this is enough food for thought to post in the towel section. 🧁⚪

I thought hugging Isabella in the vision is what triggers everything to happen, because it is after that hug that Mirabel and Abuela have their argument because Mirabel helped Isabella open herself up, the house falls apart and than Mirabel runs to the river where Abuela finds her, and than the two reconcile. So I believe the vision was showing the next step, and where it would lead to (hence the butterfly landing on the grass that we see in the vision and in the reconcile scene!) 😊

I actually noticed pretty quickly in my first watch just how much Isabella looks like a young Alma, and in later watching I also noticed that Mariano looks an awful lot like Pedro. I think this is one of the reasons that Alma focuses so much on Isabella and is pushing so hard for the engagement. She sees in her the potential to have the life she wishes she and Pedro could have had together. There really is so much to unpack in this movie, the way the handle generational trauma and very real problems we all can relate to in the midst of this magical imagery is so beautiful... and the message that it wasn't magic, but love, acceptance, and supporting eachother is what the family really needed is a wonderful message.

My idea about the doors imaging adult vs. young Antonio has to do with when the miracle faded. Since the future was unknown after a certain point, like how Bruno said it all depended on Mirabel, the house or miracle didn't know how things would end up. The doors show the characters at the age when the miracle broke, signifying a possible end. In contrast, the door at the end that shows the whole family could signify a new beginning.

The first time I saw Encanto, I had thought that the figure Mirabel was hugging in the vision was Abuela Alma (mostly because of the position of the candle, which looked to me to be around hip level - where Abuela usually carried it... also because the skirt the figure was wearing wasn't as flowing as Isabella's.) So when it resolved to be Isa, it was a definite "wait, what?" moment for me. Although in retrospect, it makes sense... like you said, per Bruno "Things are out of order." Strengthening her relationship with Isabella was a helpful "baby step" toward making amends with Abuela which in turn saved the miracle.

I got the distinct impression that Antonio is just not fond of strangers, or large crowds. He prefers the company of animals. I feel like all the gifts link to the person in some way. And how they are used prior to the miracle wavering, is just how Abuela decided it would most benefit the town. Their gifts are like cutiemarks. And sometimes, you can read cutiemarks in different ways. ^^

Regarding the pictures of the characters on their doors: I think the theory of Abuela's expectations being depicted and Mirabel's appreciation of Antonio as he is in that moment are also shown in the way Antonio's ceremony starts: Abuela (always) stands at the door, expecting the child to COME TO HER, to "meet" her expectaions, Mirabel COMES TO Antonio FETCHES and ACCOMPANYS HIM. Abuela expects each family member to play by her "rules", she is the person to decide how and what to do, Mirabel meets them where they are and tries to make them feel better tl;dr Abuela and Mirabel show via their behaviour during Antonio's ceremony how they "treat" their family members in general

Did anyone else notice that Mariano is a bulked up version of "Abuelo"? So basically a younger version of Abuela (who looks really similar to Isabella) is supposed to get together with a younger version of Abuelo. Wow, Abuela really is trying to control the family even more than I thought.
@jodifrosch4492 жыл бұрын
This is a SUPER tiny detail and it quite honestly might be nothing at all, but to further drive home the theory for Mirabel becoming the keeper of the miracle after Abuela’s passing, both Abuela and Mirabel say the phrase “Let’s go, let’s go!” At separate times during the film. Mirabel says it during the song “The Family Madrigal” at the very beginning of the movie. Abuela says it during the family breakfast as everyone is gathering to the table. At first it probably seems like nothing to pay attention to (and it very well might not be), but both times the phrase is said it’s used in a similar way/ has a similar purpose: to gather/ corral/ direct the family for a moment. Abuelas moment is obvious, but while Mirabel is singing she says it during the part of the song when everyone is gathered together RIGHT before Abuela’s short singing bit of the song. I happened to notice it on my own and I’m probably grasping at straws, but it really struck me and as we all know, Disney rarely does things by accident, the details run deep and carry meaning 99.9% of the time so maybe it means something idk😬 Btw you guys are precious and one of my favorite channels, keep doing what you’re doing☺️

You are expected to believe she means Mariano? I didn’t know that. She was talking about the vision Bruno gave her, and then says it’s like I can hear him now, I can hear him now! I never thought it had anything to do with anyone but Bruno. But maybe that’s just the writer in me - if you don’t mention another person by name the pronoun will continue to refer to the same person.
@ister25072 жыл бұрын
Wow, you just made me realise one more thing. I've noticed one connection - when Bruno has his vision, he takes Mirabel's hands to "see" better. He literally says "you may want to hang out". Now check this out. When Mirabel talks to Alma she does exactly the same gesture. When she leads abuela into the river, she says "I can finally see" and reaches out in the same inviting way Bruno did to her during the vision, ending up in Mirabel being the "seeing" one. It was clear to me for some time already (I mean, I've watched Encanto only some 2 weeks ago). But after watching your movie I thought - is that it or is there more into it. And guess what - this exact gesture of taking someone's hand happens every time, when someone reveals their secret pain to Mirabel! First after the part of "Surface Pressure" where Lisa comes back from the fact that she could have less pressure to the verse that the pressure keeps growing, they hold hands pretty much in the same manner (OK, in this case it's Luisa holding Mirabel, but the connection is clearly there, even though only "in song"). And then, when Luisa reveals how she's "sick of pretty" and Mirabel sings (surprise, surprise) "it's awesome to see how you rise", she offers the hands in the same manner and Isa accepts the gesture! Taking into account everything else I heavily doubt it is just a happy coincidence.

Actually, i highly disagree. First, she didn't tell people about the cracks bc 1. They'd panic and 2. They'd all blame the cracks on mirabel. Secondly, she didn't tell em about Bruno because it could cause more harm than good to him. She said the vision thing in the table because compared to the secret she was keeping about Bruno, she had to let out ONE thing right? Not to mention, at the end, she's frowning because her gift is a curse to her. I respect the theory but i have to sadly say i strongly disagree.

A friend and I have been discussing if there's a significance to the doors not yet having their carvings on them at the very end of the movie, like they're still "loading". In all other instances, they glow for a moment and reveal their carvings as soon as the character touches the doorknob, but in these scenes, they're glowing for a long time, and yet all the characters have their gifts back. I'm sure there's something to be said about the symbolism of the characters now getting to decide for themselves what they will be (hence the doors are waiting for them to come, touch the doorknob, and reveal something new), but it also leaves open the possibility that Mirabel will finally have her own room! Something the director sort of alluded to on Twitter, he mentioned in regards to this concern of fan's that there was something people hadn't noticed yet. Was what we hadn't noticed the blank doors? Just food for thought

I think it's a lot simpler than all that. Bruno just sees random snippets. That does not give him special insight. He's just guessing based on what he sees. What he sees is 100% accurate but his interpretation of what he sees isn't any better than anyone else could do. He absolutely saw Mirabel and Isabela hugging, and he just assumed that's all that needed to happen. In reality, that was just one little event in the middle of the whole process.

Three fun facts. One, in Columbian Culture, the squeak Dolores makes means she heard something she shouldn't have, because during a war they developed a way to communicate without speaking. Second, in Columbian culture, saying 'it looks like rain' to someone on their wedding day means you think their going to get a divorce, which is why Peppa got so upset. Third, Mirabels VA was in labor when she sang 'Waiting On A Miracle'.

You see... way back in the mid 1980s, my friends and I tried making a hologram. The early ones were green or red because of the laser color. And we had a green laser of the right strength. We had the medium to etch the hologram on. An apple to be the object in the hologram. And here is where it gets interesting... We needed a large darkroom so we could space everything out, and... Sand. Lots and lots of sand to keep everything stable for an extended period of time. Did it work for us? No. It was like trying to build a homemade pinhole camera, but... Is it possible or even probable the animators took that early technique as inspiration for Bruno's vision sequence?

Mirabel means “Mira”: to look, and “bel” comes from the Latin root of beauty/beautiful. Piggybacking on the idea that Dolores and Bruno's eyes being open represents that their gifts give them a deeper knowledge/understanding of the world around the everyone else: Dolores' lyrics in We Don't Talk About Bruno show that she, like everyone else, grew up initially fearing Bruno because of his reputation. However, as her gift force her to 'open her eyes', she too has to grapple with knowing more than she should about everyone around her and bearing that burden. As an adult, she understands what he was going through better than anyone else even though Bruno hasn't been able to explain himself to her: "It's a heavy lift, with a gift so humbling Always left Abuela and the family fumbling Grappling with prophecies they couldn't understand Do you understand? " Her "Do you understand?" appears to me to even have a subtle desperation: She's not just asking if Maribel understands what she is saying about Bruno, but asking if Maribel understands her own burden. It's a cool moment, since the cousins don't get their own song, that we get to see her having similar needs to Isabella and Luisa for someone to understand and empathize.

Magic doors, magic pictures! My evidence? Color photography wasn't exactly common when they escaped to that valley. The assumption is that there is NO contact with the outside. Do you imagine those refugees were hauling cutting-edge photographic equipment? I think not! The house provides the pictures and the MAGIC part of the pictures changes at the whim of Casita. But, you may say, we see them clearly taking pictures but that appears to be a classic black&white camera not uncommon at that time. Remember that they likely arrived at the turn of the century. So... the humans take black and white pictures and Casita magics them to have color AND an appropriate door.
@that_myth_nerd2 жыл бұрын
my theories: 1. mirabel didn't get a gift initially because: when you watch the scene at mirabel's ceremony, she holds the candle, wipes her hands on her dress, then touches the doorknob, causing the door to dissapear. during antonio's, he holds the candle, then immediately touches his doorknob, giving him his gift. mirabel just wiped off the magic. 2. mirabel is able to see the cracks in casita and has a closer bond with the house because she doesnt have a gift. while the rest of her family goes out to help the village, she has to stay behind at casita, and she spends more time befriending the house. 3. colors. one of the most obvious things to see are the facts that the different sides of the family wear different colors. abuela wears a purple-pink color, pepa's side wears orange/yellow, and julieta's side wears a more teal-blue pallete. bruno wears green, and is the only one wearing that color. his different color ties in with mirabels glasses, which are also green. that color couls represent how they both feel left out by the family. also, after isabela discovers who she really is and her dress changes to a dark blue to match her side of the family's colors, she is breaking away from abuela's perfect purple-pink world. isa's dress was initially a lighter kind of shade of abuela's dress. 4. isabela does look a lot like young abuela, and even wore her hair in the 2 braids( that young abuela always wore) when she was little. mariano looks a lot like pedro, which explains abuelas pressure on isa to marry mariano. she sees herself in isabela, and wants her to have the perfect life that she never got to have with pedro.

It has her at the forefront, showing what her gift is, leading the family and protecting them and the miracle. Whether that gift is from the candle or just a natural gift she has, either way. I believe this mostly because there's no depiction on the front door until after they rebuild the house.

I want to know why Casita can't enter Bruno's tower? Like has the magic left because he left the room? Or could casita never enter the room yet somehow was able to make it? Or even can Casita not enter anyone's room considering we only ever see Casita interact with mirabel in the nursery but not when she's in Isabella's room?

I think it's important to note that Augustin also wears glasses and is the first one to really take her side, believe her & stand up for her when she reveals what she been doing & what is happening. Especially contrasted against Julietta who didn't when Mirabel told her about it & told her to not 'lose her way in the family' like Bruno did. He had a clarity of the situation that maybe Julietta was too close to see or maybe had just given up on as the yrs went by; as Augustins deleted line to Julietta in the final song (revealed by Lin) said, "She takes after you, that's exactly how you were" in reference to how Mirabel has grown & who she is as a person. Also the front door at the end shows everyone with their eyes closed, & even in different poses- the symbolism of which would be endless fascinating to discuss.

Another layer to the vision of the future and Bruno saying 'it's all out of order' - first, we see several moments that will occur - the door crashing to the ground which Felix pulls Antonio out of the way of, I think also the railings as a ladder and possibly also a painting door swinging. second, and this brings us to the topic of the hug - he sees Mirabel hugging young Alma because Abuela and Mirabel don't see eye to eye until Abuela tells the truth about her life - and accepts her story. I think he's seeing pieces of the past and it's confusing him because it's the representation of the truth coming out. He's seeing the story of the past being told in the future - it's all out of order. It's the only way he could have seen it though - because there's no sound. Alma in the vision is a visual representation of the truth that needs to be accepted and moved past.
