Scar is a genius, calculating, hyper-rational guy. Added that he's also deeply bitter and resentful towards the whole royal family and how they 'betrayed' him (at least thats how he felt - he felt that he deserve better). This enables him to come up with a cold-blooded coup plan. He got it all almost right - his strategy and tactic are brilliant. Unfortunately he lacks control of the operational arena. He should have made sure that Simba is completely dead, that the hyenas 'slit his throat.' That would preempt the exact event that leads to his own demise. All things aside, his ability as a strategic thinker, along with his cold, narcissistic, yet vulnerable and resentful personality, makes him an (almost) unstoppable villain that he's better be killed than to be exiled. One more thing: he is not a wizard/deity with abundant power (like Hades or Maleficient), neither he is an influential public figure or sort in terms of decision-making (like Jafar or Frollo). He is despised by his own society, he is beaten and shameful, yet he is still capable to organize a smooth coup plan while still being seen as innocent by scapegoating Simba. Genius. I wanna have his 'lion's share of intelligence'....

Fun fact: when recording "Be Prepared," Jeremy Irons threw out his voice on the line "You won't get a sniff without me" and couldn't continue recording. But he was far too small and young to be a threat to his uncle and would have been killed in seconds. He could try and tell the rest of the pride before Scar does but Scar is so cunning and manipulative he would have ben able to convince the pride that the death of Mufasa was all the fault of Simba.

The lovely thing about that scene is that it leaves it up to the viewers interpretation whether the vision actually happens, or if it is Simba's own internal realisation. Nothing that he says is outside of what could just be Simba's internal conscious. And the way both Raffiki and Simba react is consistent with both interpretations.

You really should. Lion King is AWESOME. It has amazing music, animation, characters and story, AND it's got one of the best direct-to-video sequels that Disney has ever come up with (which wouldn't normally mean all that much, but unlike most of the other sequels Lion King 2 is legitimately good, especially for a DTV release, and Lion King 1 1/2 isn't bad either)

Scar is a great villain because he has no remorse. Scar is basically a psychopath and doesn't care at all when he destroys the ecosystem and kills his own brother. Due to that fact that he has no remorse, he is willing to do anything to get what he wants. He is also extremely intelligent and hides it fairly well. Scar has almost all of the characteristics of a great villain so he is absolutely my favorite villain of all time.

Although Scar isn't necessarily my absolute favorite Disney villain (that honor goes to Claude Frollo), I'd still put him in my top five, and I'm glad to see him get the number one spot. However, you forgot to mention the best part about why killing Mufasa was such a deciding factor in Scar being the number one villain (no offense to Robbie Rotten): that Mufasa was his own brother! In most Disney movies, families always get along really well, apart from a few arguments between parents and rebellious children. But the fact that Scar was willing to mercilessly murder his own family member and blame another family member for it makes that scene a million times more disturbing. We've seen villains like Lady Tremaine or Mother Gothel who are evil stepmothers, but Scar takes it to another level because of how he is biologically related to the hero. Which he knows too. At the end, he tries to use blood relation as an excuse for Simba not to kill him. That kind of relationship between the hero and the villain makes the story so much more dramatic and tragic.

The thing I love about Scar as a villain is how his jealousy for his brother literally turns into a green eyed monster. After living in his brother's shadow for so long, the only real reason he tries to get the crown is his jealousy for Mufassa. And even after killing Mufassa he still lives in his brother's shadow. When his policies don't go as planned, the pride glorifies Mufassa's reign and practically deify him, while their hatred for Scar only intensified even more, and even his hyenas are questioning his reign. And with no brother to take out his anger on, he decides to make everyone else suffer for it. At that point it's no longer about trying to be a good ruler, he just wants to see them suffer as much as possible even sacrificing the hyenas who he called his friends

Minister Claude Frollo is the best villain. Hellfire is amazing song. He was willing to raise Quasimodo which shows some of his human side remains, but the name show how innately cruel he is. He dies at the hands of his own creation (the fire, and Quasi). He even feels guilty about how he feels for Esmeralda.

I think Frollo is the best Disney Villain...He killed Quasimodo's mom within minutes of the movie starting... wants to throw a baby to a pond... then raises that baby telling him everyday he is ugly and deform and thats why the world doesn't love him. He did genocide and continue to hunt "Gypsies" as if they were ants. He falls in in love ( in lust) with Esmeralda (while being part of the church) and acuse her of witchcraft. Because he cannot have her, he kills innocents to find her, he tries to burn Esmeralda alive for not choosing him, and almost stabs Quasimodo...Showing literally no remorse in anything he did.Plus... he supports torture... And Hellfire is the best Villain Song... Its so beautifully disturbed and deep and dark... and the prequel of the song Heavens light, makes HellFire even darker and more disturbed.

Lovely video as always! Although I have to disagree. I think Judge Claude Frollo is the best villain. He's the most real and complex, like a corrupt leader you'd see in real life. And I LOVE that his villain song is about the agony a villain feels to be who they are, unlike other Disney villains who sing about how fun it is to be evil and how excited they are about their nefarious plans. He's the only villain who feels pained by his own villainy rather than relishes it. Anyway, awesome video!

With the new Mufasa movie, I think you should make a part 2 to this. With the CGI continuity being vastly different compared to the 1994 continuity, it shows Scar in a different light that not only makes him far more tragic and complicated as a character but eventually becomes the tyrant we know and love to hate. As a child I was confused about why Simba felt guilty as well.. but if you think about it, seconds before the antilopes stamps, Simba lets out a "roar" (which Scar tells him to practise) .. in Simba's mind he's the reason the antilopes got scared and his father had to die to save him. (↑◇↑) That's what I believe is the reason🌸.

Beyond the roar, he blames himself because he put himself in the situation to begin with. Stampedes happen, but him being in the middle of the stampede means that Mufasa had to risk his own life to save him. He never sees what causes Mufasa to fall down so he believes that Mufasa dies in order to save him. Which is classic survivor's guilt. The worst part is that Scar could have just let the situation play out and Mufasa would have likely died (Mufasa was having trouble getting up the ledge and asks Scar for help) but Mufasa was just so spiteful that he just HAD to seal his fate personally.

I'm pretty sure Scar iconic status is due to the fact that he raised the bar considerably and paved way for a new class of male antagonists to come. Before, most of their male villains were either campy or big doofs but Scar was elegant, Machiavellian and very strategic. Frollo, Hans, Dr. Facilier, Hades, Clayton, etc. might not exist if Scar hadn't set this new standard. His impact on Disney history and audiences is undeniable!

I think that mufasa was the king of the pride due to being stronger, the strongest male lion is always the Alfa. Actually usually all other newly adult male lions fight and once one wins the rest have to leave the pride.

Im surprised it wasn't mentioned, but Scar is also the best villian because of his pure cruel personality. Think about it, he sets up simbas death the first time so he could WATCH him be destroyed by hyenas in the graveyard, is greatly visually disappointed when his plan fails. He didnt have to watch Simba die, but he wanted to see it. Then later, he ensures Mufasa knows whats about to happen before throwing him to his death, and takes pleasure in how powerless Mufasa is. Afterwards, even though he knows hes going to have his young grieving nephew viciously killed within minutes, he STILL takes the time to make sure Simba feels as much guilt as possible ("if it weren't for YOU, he'd still be alive.."). So even in what he knows to be Simbas final moments alive, he makes zero attempt at even pretending to comfort him. He also then sends 3 large predators after him which would make for a terrifying last moments of death, all the while he smirks as if the entire situation is amusing. He couldn't just kill his family and be king, he took great joy in tormenting them both beforehand. Years later it is shown he not only doesn't care about preserving the longevity of the kingdom ("The herds have moved on") but also doesn't care about the lives of his subjects ("Then you have sentenced us to death! -So be it."). These are family members and friends he has likely grown up with, eaten with, slept beside/with, conversed with, yet their lives mean absolutely nothing to him and he would watch as they slowly starve to death around him. Savage. I can think of no other disney villian that takes cruelty as far as Scar does. He is next level psychopath!

I guess Mother Gothel is my favorite villain just because she's ironically the most realistic out of all of them. Sure, she's using magical flower power to keep her wrinkly self alive, but everything beyond that is something that could occur in every day life. In fact, it does happen. Manipulation is why victims stay in abusive relationships, why many children grow up believing what horrors they've experienced is normal. And until the end, she still has a pretty strong control over Rapunzel. I'd imagine if everything went Mother Gothel's way, after awhile she could have probably convinced Rapunzel that mother really knew best, and that she deserved the punishment of being locked away, unable to see the light of day.

That is exactly why I HATE Mother Gothel! I don't mean I hate her because she's a lousy character, I mean I hate her because she's EVIL! I still remember seeing Tangled in the theatre and thinking "I can't wait to see her die!" I can probably show on one hand the number of characters in all of fiction that I've ever felt that way about (in fact, I probably could if I cut off fingers). So yeah, if "best" means "most EVIL", then I'd say Gothel wins. That being said, in my personal opinion, a villain should still be a likable character. Someone you LOVE to hate. And Scar definitely fits that bill.

I think the best part about Scar was his resentment that his brother is king because Scar isn't physically strong enough to challenge him. Scar rightfully believes it should be the smartest who rules, not the strongest. Scar won all his battles with sheer wit and clever tactics, and in the end he lost when Simba grew up strong enough to out-muscle him.

I love how "Be Prepared" shows some intense foreshadowing, albeit not the way Scar intended. The song gets creepier if you think of what fate eventually befalls Scar. The whole song is basically, "Prepare yourselves. We're going to kill the king!" At the end of the movie, the hyenas are prepared enough to eat King Scar. Hyenas: "Great idea! Who needs a king?" And then at the end of the movie, they decide they don't need King Scar anymore. Scar: "Stick with me, and you'll never go hungry again!" And then when Scar fails to provide enough meals, he becomes the meal. Scar: "You're expected to take certain duties on board!" (runs paw across his throat to show he means they'll have to assist in regicide) The hyenas do eventually commit regicide against Scar. Hyenas: "We'll have food, lots of food. We repeat: Endless meat!" And when the supply of their regular prey runs out, they eat Scar. Seriously, how did Scar think this was a good idea? I can understand the idea of recruiting hyenas because they're the sworn enemies of lions, so he could get pretty far with the angle of "Oh, the other lions have mistreated you, but I'm not like them! I think you deserve better!" But if the enemy of your species is only following you for food, what in the world do you think will happen to you if the food ever runs out? Even then, he was doing pretty well until he tried shifting the blame to the hyenas. Don't give potential enemies more reasons to turn on you, especially if you've already broken a major promise. (In this case, the promise was a constant supply of food. Scar's failed to provide that, and now he's trying to pin the blame on them, so their suspicions are confirmed; he has indeed just been using them and doesn't truly care about their welfare.)
