Okay, here goes: Abu doesn't count as a second because as a pet he counts as an extension of his master, Aladdin. This is the same reason why Iago can't just fly in and get the lamp for his master, Jafar. Aladdin can step on the carpet and not break the rules for the same reason why the carpet can touch Aladdin and not break the rules: Aladdin wasn't trying to take the carpet, his touch was passive. It was only when Abu grabbed the jewel to take for himself (and by extension Aladdin) that the rules were broken. [As an example, had Aladdin tripped into a pile of coins he still wouldn't have broken the rules as he wasn't trying to take them, his touching them was incidental and thus he remained worthy.] Trust me, I know my fairy tale lingo. Its kinda what I do.

Also, Aladdin stopped being a prince when Hagar changed his clothes because he basically undid Aladdin's wish with his magic powers. Not sure how he was able to do that, but part of it might be because Aladdin himself didn't believe he was truly a prince so his wish was already weakend.

1. I think the animals in Aladdin are “extensions” of their owners. So if Iago went in, it would be like if Jafar went in. And Abu going in is fine because the cave saw him as part of Aladdin, and any rulebreaking would count as Aladdin breaking the rule, not Abu himself 2. The live action version changes it to “TAKE nothing but the lamp”, which I feel is more fitting 3. Because Jafar wants all the glory for himself, that’s why he wants to be Sultan. The live action version explains a little more how he’s been told to “know his place” and that he isn’t Sultan. So he wants to be in a position where he holds all the power, even without his staff 4. He has to be careful about Jasmine because the Sultan loves her dearly and believes that Jafar does too. If Jafar didn’t bring her back to the palace, or if he killed her, it would make the Sultan suspicious, and Jafar couldn’t have that 5. Aladdin is a prince, but he has no kingdom (live action version shows that even after wishing to be a prince, Aladdin still has to ask Genie to make the kingdom appear on the map. But it’s not a real kingdom, it’s just an illusion). A royal with no kingdom is hardly a royal at all, especially in a Disney movie

I also think with 5, Jafar could have easily undone that wish with his staff most likely. When he put Aladdin back in his clothes it could have canceled it out. But I do think the live action movie does help explain things the animated version didn't. When the movie came out the makes probably weren't that concerned with the loop holes. It is a kids movie and doesn't always have to make sense. However the live action gave them a chance to go further into the details people have questioned.

The point is that Aladdin is supposed to be a real prince, else his wish wasn't granted. Also how about his entire entourage while entering the sultan's palace, wouldn't that be part of his kingdom? What I think happened is that he *was* a prince, but he still should have told Jasmine the truth. The lie is not that he wasn't a prince, instead he lied when he said that he was a prince that was pretending to be a street rat. And Jafar took his "prince status" with his staff.

the thing about aladdin getting a job is that someone would have to give him one, it’s clear that no one likes him so they wouldn’t offer him a job and he clearly has 0 money so he couldn’t just become a merchant without the start up money. and as far as Jafar just hypnotizing the sultan, i think he knew there was a limit to his powers and what he could get him to do, then there’s also the fear that someone else could see him doing it and he’d prolly be killed on the spot for it. the carpet clearly belonged to someone who tried to enter the cave and didn’t make it out so not part of the caves treasure. i think the whole prince thing is more about the fact that he still feels like a street rat and not a prince, also that whole thing about how genies play tricks with their wishes, he wished to be a prince so he looks like one but isn’t actually biologically a prince. and to your point about aladdin stealing, he only steals enough for him to be able to eat to keep living, it’s not like he takes enough to fill him up or that it’s not the amount they’d have prolly had to throw out anyway, he’s just a kid trying to survive on the streets of a town of people who obviously look down on him and think he’s trash, but still he goes out of his way to help others and is genuinely kinds despite how he’s grown up. i’ll give you the only one can enter and that whole thing tho

Thought that bugs me: Aladdin wishes to become a prince. not PRETEND to be a prince. A real prince, whole package. Does that mean that together with a fancy outfit and monkey-elephant, Genie also had to create an entire kingdom from scratch, background history, new royal family three, country's economics and trade? All those people in the Prince Ali song, do they just disappear from existens afterwards or do they stay in the city, just hanging around without purpose? When Jafar asks where Aladdin's country is located, he can't answer! He's got no lies prepared! And nobody knows about him or his fake country, the sultan just takes his words for it! And two, why does Aladdin panic when the sultan tells him he can marry Jasmine and later become sultan himself? Didn't he know that's kinda how the royal family heritage works? Or did he just wanna meet Jasmine and be like "hey, wanna hang out in my homeless ruin and steal some bread together?". He really didn't think this trough. One moment you meet a pretty girl, and the next you're faking a royal title and being told that you'll get married and one day rule an entire country...

hi so i recently saw the broadway production of aladdin on tour, and they do a really good job of filling in a lot of these plotholes. (also i havent seen the movie in a while so some of these things were probably in the movie) for example: - well first of all, abu doesnt exist, he has three friends babkak omar and kassim that were going to be in the movie but were replaced with abu - iago is human - jafar cant go in the cave because the cave doesnt even show up for people who arent worthy - to marry the princess you have to be a prince - aladdin is the diamond in the rough because he was a constant thief but after his mom passed away he has been trying to clean up his act, but the movie just makes it look like he is a jerk - jafar arrests aladdin by tricking him into going into the princess' bedroom which is illegal for suitors and many other things that i hardly remember

That's why Jafar need the lamp, if he was a strong as a genie, he could make himself the sultan and movie over. So Jafar couldn't make Aladdin's prince tittle disappeared. Just his clothes.

One thing that made no sense to me is this. After Aladdin has been arrested, Jasmine goes to Jafar to confront him. Jafar says Aladdin has been beheaded for "kidnapping the princess". The Sultan even scolds him for punishing Aladdin without telling him. So, when Jasmine found out that Ali was Aladdin, her first question should have been, "I was told you were beheaded. How did you get out of that?"

Ichibot K9869 she found out BEFORE Jafar stole the lamp. It was after the carpet ride and before Jafar orders the guards to kill Ali/Aladdin. Jafar then hypnotized the Sultan into making Jasmine marry him and Ali shows up and breaks the staff. Jafar realizes Ali is Aladdin and orders Iago to get the lamp. Only then does Jafar summon the genie and reveal the truth to Jasmine and the Sultan.

The fact that Aladdin was not a Prince at the end used to bother me as well. He wished to BE a prince, not appear a prince. So I never understood about how he needed to tell the truth, since the truth was he was a prince. I think that Genie literally made him a prince, in fact at the end Genie says "One bonafide pedigree coming up." That's right, as an all powerful Genie, he can literally change Aladdin's heritage. This bothered me until I realized that this same ability was given to the most powerful sorcerer in the world, Jafar. When Jafar "revealed" Aladdin, he didn't just change his clothes, but reversed the wish that the Genie had granted, turning him back into a street rat. Then the Sultan changing the law at the end isn't a surprise. He is Sultan and should be able to decree whatever he wants. That said, I don't think he would have changed the law for anyone less than the man who restored his kingdom to him.

After Aladdin releases Genie, he still posesses his magic. If Aladdin released him in the beginning of the movie or even during the battle against Jafar, Genie could have done anything he wanted, even beat Jafar, or at the very least that would've freed Genie from Jafar's control. true, he could of released him in the begging but had no reason to, being as he had need to use the wishes to change his status quo and saw Genie as no more important then a random street vendor, as proof he even coned Genie in to bursting him out of the cave with out using a wish. once we got to the battle against Jafar the situation changed, I do believe Aladdin was ready to release Genie by then, but he didn't know at that point if that would rob Genie of all his powers or not, we only know he kept them due to having watched the ending. So there was a risk that if he did release Genie there he'd not have any way to help combat Jafar and he was having enough trouble on his own fighting him. So instead of risking getting everyone killed which would happen if Jafar ended up being the only one who still had access to magic. He instead used his wits to pull off a rather clever Con, betting that Jafar did not know about all the downsides to being a Genie, So he'd be able to pull of a Bait and switch, and trap Jafar in a place where he figured he couldn't hurt anyone.

Jafar wanted to tie up a loose end and test the cave's defenses, so he let the other crook die. Iago is more "apparently intelligent" than the monkey. Also, Iago is Jafar's pet/flunkie/whatever, so he's more valuable. The cave is programmed and doesn't care about non-diamonds in non-roughs. The cave is probably programmed for hands-on touching, not feet. Otherwise you'd touch the floor and set off the security.

I'm going to clear some things up for you guys. - Aladdin suffers from a fairly common condition called imposter syndrome. - The genie actually does make him a prince but because of Aladdin's condition he doesn't internalize it and therefore feels guilty about everything. So when genie tells Aladdin to tell Jasmin the truth he actually wants him to tell her that he didn't used to be a prince but he is one now. - Jafar needs the lamp to be legitimately named Sultan which is why he pursues it. When he is made Sultan he legitimately can banish Aladdin and take away his status as a royal and does so. - When Jafar is banished Aladdin doesn't receive his title back automatically. It's likely he needs to either get it back from the restored Sultan (awkward) or the genie (going back on a promise).

I would argue that the important factor in Aladdin's prince status is the genie. Now, Genie isn't a Jackass Genie (see TV Tropes) who is willfully misinterpreting his wish. But he is a bit of a matchmaker and he does want Aladdin to be himself. So he gives Aladdin all the trappings of a prince (money, clothes, animal procession) without necessarily all the rest of it (country, subjects, noble lineage, etc.). When Jafar changes his outfit back to his regular clothes, his lack of noble lineage is revealed. So I think it's twofold. One, the genie only makes him look like a prince and helps him perpetuate the deception. Two, in the world of the movie birth/noble lineage is what makes you a prince... until it doesn't when a heroic nobility and love win the day. I don't remember all the specifics from the original text but I feel like this wasn't an issue in that story. It was a lot more about stuff. But Disney baked in some arguably good lessons for children into their adaptation which complicates matters if you think about it too much.

1. Jafar's not a moron. He knows magic is tricksey. He was using the other guy to test what would happen in the cave. Also, he probably didn't tell the dude about the lamp. 2. The cave is magical, and trickster spirits exist in plenty of cultures. It's not necessarily a matter of protecting its treasure, but potentially trolling foolish mortals. Again, magic is tricksey. 3. If Jafar has never been in the cave, how does he know what the rules are? There's no evidence that an animal would have been allowed in prior to Abu's entrance. Because Jafar already knows to use other people as test subjects (not being an idiot), he would have waited to see what happened to Abu. Also, he may not have thought of it at the time. Not to mention that Iago probably wouldn't have gone. 4. Jafar isn't trusting criminals. He's using other people so that he doesn't put himself in danger. Because he's not stupid. 5. The rug is a nitpick. 6. Abu was clearly stealing something. He wasn't merely being an animal here. Monkeys can be trained to steal, and this reflects badly on Aladdin's character. He owns the monkey, he's responsible. Even if you don't go by that, Abu is his companion, and we are judged by our friends. 7. The treasure probably wasn't real, but rather a test to ensure the character of the person who entered -- to show that the diamond in the rough wasn't going to be swayed from the straight and narrow by glorious riches. That is, are one's principles stronger than greed? Anyone can be cool in ordinary circumstances. Not everyone can be cool when there's more treasure than probably what the Sultan owns. 8. The cave asked for a "diamond in the rough," not a "chosen one." 9. The cave entrance indicates general unworthiness. The melting treasure indicates the failure of character of a potentially good person. 10. Cave having a pierced ear is a nitpick. You may as well ask why someone carved his face into a tiger. Probably the image was granted to him by the wizard that created him, earring and all. 11. Crystals and stones are often cited as magical. Probably that earring is a magical heirloom from the Sultan's forefathers. In a world with magical caves, lamps, and genies, questioning where the Sultan got the ring is unreasonable. Probably there's been magical shenanigans for thousands of years in this country. 12. Jafar's goal is not to be sultan. As the ending of the movie indicates, he wants to be the most powerful person ever. Simply controlling a sultan with a staff isn't going to give him ultimate power or ensure that a kingdom under him would continue to be wealthy. The more he manipulates the Sultan, the more other people are going to notice what he's doing and how people behave when under the spell. The staff is, at best, a short term measure. 13. Jafar has probably been planning this and other magical shenanigans for years, given that he is a skilled wizard. He may have even stumbled over one of the halves of the beetle when looking for more magical stuff and that provoked his quest. Honestly, if you think this plan is confusing, well, don't take any courses in accounting, science, or computer engineering. That's enough. If the second half of the video contains as many logic flaws...well, I'm out.

Hm, but wouldn't going for a lamp that can grant wishes be the ultimate greedy move? Does the cave prevent people that know about the lamp from entering?

Most of this I agree with. But one thing I would add is that Aladdin asks to be a prince, in a sequel he finds his father king of thieves. Who technically is a king, therefore Aladdin is a prince in someway, the wish could have caused this. Just something I noticed and not sure if it counts or not.

+TiagoTiago The assumption I believe OP is making, and what is surely my assumption, is that the Cave of Wonders was created by some powerful sorcerer at least 10,000 years prior to the events of the movie as a test for whomever enters the cave in search of the lamp. The fake treasure is a good measure of character, as if you were simply going to wish for treasure why go further. This test exists to hopefully ensure that whatever good hearteded person enters has the determination to forgo wealth for whatever their true desires are. To further expand on the "diamond in the rough", this is important, what the cave is looking for isn't a Hero, it isn't a Saint. What it's looking for is someone who has lived a hard life, who understands what it means to struggle to survive, and who hasn't been hardened by this, who still believes in other people. Being a thief in a world like Agrabah is no more or less noble than the shopkeeper. Its a means of survival in a world that shuns those relegated to the street. Could he really have become a merchant or a shopkeeper? Not likely, the merchants who would have the money to pay another hand are the merchants who would be most likely to not see Aladdin as anything more than a Street Rat. In societies like that being forced into a life of crime is more than common. Whats worth mentioning though, is that Aladdin isn't running around cutting purses and trying to amass physical wealth. He's simply stealing enough for he and his monkey to eat. The shopkeepers can afford one less loaf of bread.

That is exactly the kind of prince an annoyed djinn would make. We have loads of stories of angry djinns. But in the original Aladdin his djinns (he had two) were pretty chill until he tried to make one steal a sacred egg (it is, of course, a long story). But yeah, original djinns, pretty chill. And the sultan didn't give a fuck as long as he had shitloads of gold and slaves. I actually felt a little bad gor the visir, the sultan had promised the princess (whose real name I don't remember how to spell) to his son. Then Aladdin walks in going "sup majesty here's a gold bowl with melon sized gems in it, more where that came from," sultan goes "cool, she's yours" but forgets and tries to marry her off anyway. Aladdin sends in a djinn to kidnap the dude at night and shoves him face first in the privy all night for three days. Guy says "fuck it she ain't worth it," Aladdin marries her, visir vows revenge, etc.
