Sorry to be late, but a possible answer is that for transfiguration to work the victim has to be somewhat unaware or unprepared. Another is that the caster needs a good amount of concentration to do it and it'd be hard to in the middle of battle. Though a more likely one is that there's probably a counter/preventative nonverbal spell that well-trained wizards can use in the middle of a fight and people like Draco wouldn't yet know about. Though an even more likely explanation is that it's the sort of thing you're not supposed to think about, just like how Jedi and Sith don't use the Force to turn off their opponent's lightsabers.

There is an issue with your theory, as the Ministry of Magic forbids magical creatures like House Elves, Centaurs, and Goblins using wands. Thus if Krum were a full on Dukuwaqa he would not be able to attend a wizarding school. However, it is distinctly possible that Krum is a half-breed with Dukuwaqa ancestry, like the Delacour family having Veela ancestry, Hagrid and Maxine being half-giants, and Flitwick having Goblin ancestry, apparently.

I think this fits much better because from what I can glean from the Dukawaqa, they transform only to half shark/half man i didn't see them say they could actually be and act as a full man. I think Krum being from Dukwaqa lineage would explain this because it would mean that he is a man, just with the unique ability from his ancestry to transform partially into a shark!

@@Jade_Hanson Krum could be an inexperienced Animagus or more likely he could be part Dukuwaka. Hagrid is half giant, Madam Maxine is half giant, Fleur is part Veela, Flitwick is part goblin. So Krum doesn't have to be completely human to go to a wizarding school or participate in the tournament. It's stated obviously in the books that Fleur is not the only part Veela from Beauxbatons. So it's also possible that Krum is not the only part Dukuwaka from Durmstrang. They arrived in a boat travelling underwater, so the sails are furled then dropped as the boat breaches the surface. So who's pulling the boat? Perhaps several of the students who are part Dukuwaka are the ones pulling the boat underwater.

I've read the books multiple times no need to be rude. JK has stated that the books are written from Harry's POV. At that point the only transfiguration he was aware of was by spell or by becoming an Animagus. Krum may have made it appear to have used a transfiguration spell because "half-breeds" are generally frowned upon in the Ministry. Furthermore JK has written about Dukuwaqa so they are a part of the lore: "The Dukuwaqa, mascot of the Fijian National Quidditch team, was a magical creature capable of shape-shifting between the forms of a shark and a human."

Think of it in terms of a driver's license: when I go to the UK, I am permitted to drive for 12 months after arriving before needing to get a British driver's license, however they couldn't know I was unlicensed until they pulled me over and asked for my license. Similarly, if I'm Bulgarian, and I am registered as an animagus, I could possibly be allowed to transform in the UK without needing to register with their government, and therefore they wouldn't know until they asked for proof of registration. Still tho, the duquwaqa still makes as much sense as an unregistered animagus

I really love this theory but he could very well be a metamorphmagus like Nymphadora, they don’t change all their features completely and shown in the movie she too can change just her head into another animal and back. DON'T CALL HER NYMPHADORA! But yes, you're absolutely right. There are a lot of holes in this theory: 1. Yes, it would be illegal to be an unregistered animagus. But wouldn't it also be illegal to not be human, and compete in a tournament for human wizards? I'm sure they wouldn't allow house elves and centaurs and other non-humans in the Tri-Wizard Tournament. They don't even allow them into wizarding schools. 2. Two books earlier, we see someone with their head transformed into that of an animal, and they still keep their own intellect. Hermione partially turns into a cat. Krum may have simply used polyjuice potion with some shark in it, or maybe some other type of potion. Just like Harry's gillyweed, it wears off after about an hour. A much simpler explanation. 3. A shark flying on a broom seems way out of its element. Sharks live in water, not in the air. 4. Remember how the Durmstrang students get to Hogwarts - in a boat that goes underwater! This might suggest that all Durmstrang students learn to deal with underwater environments, and know about spells, potions, or magical devices that let them breathe underwater, or the like. Viktor, Cedric, and Fleur are all older than Harry, and have had more wizarding education, and seem to have no problem finding some magical underwater breathing method. While Harry has no idea how to do this, until he finds out about gillyweed. 5. This video is the first I've ever heard of sharks being attracted to shiny things. Everything I've ever heard about sharks is that they don't have very good eyesight, and they hunt mostly by smell. They smell blood in the water. And they see the general shape of fish and other tasty critters, and aren't so concerned about color and shininess. I learned that they sometimes attack surfers because when seen from below, the shape of a surfboard with human arms and legs looks like a tasty seal or similar thing. If sharks are especially attracted to shiny-skinned fish, then why haven't all fish evolved to not having shiny skin?

Something i think thats missing from this is the notion that Krum's transformation was explicitly messed up -- he didn't intend to transform *only* his head into a sharks, and while it appears mostly formed in the movie in the books its mentioned that krums teeth were too malformed to bite through the ropes. A human with a shark head is not what Krum was going for and almost certainly isn't something he would have preferred. Had it not been for harry helping him his attempt to rescue Hermoine would have failed. I think its worth entertaining the possibility that Krum might be an inexperienced or imperfect animagus, and that his shark headed form isn't a purposeful state he can replicate but rather a mistake he couldn't reliably reproduce.

You are mistaken about his teeth. He did indeed have shark's teeth during his partial transformation. In fact he was going to chew through the bindings but Harry hit him, after realizing that Krum may injure Hermione in doing so. Harry handed him something sharp to do it properly, and not rip Hermione in half in the process.

His hypothesis is wrong, the reason why you would choose to become an animagus is obvious af. How do you think Sirius would escape if he needed his wand to transform? Because an animagus doesn't need anything to transform whatsoever, meaning that Krum casting anything to assume his animagus form MAKES ZERO SENSE.

I've got a Harry Potter based challenge for you (I have suggested this before) Have you seen the film Yesterday, basically it's about a struggling musician finds that the Beatles (popular British band in 70's) never existed so releases thier songs as his own but also finds other things don't exist like cigarettes and Coca Cola (only Pepsi) and right at the end discovers Harry Potter doesn't exist so it got my thinking if you both woke up one morning to find you were the only 2 people on the planet who remember the Harry Potter books (JK Rowling never wrote them or maybe was never even born) so tried to sit down and rewrite them from memory how well you'd do! So I challenge you to with no internet or anything other than a blank document or even paper and pen write as much of the series as possible with no additional revision before and you can't read anything Harry Potter or anything while you are doing it (when you stop for lunch or something) then you have to compare it to the original, obviously I'm not saying litterally write the whole series but maybe write sections of the books or even try to write one book (an early shorter one)! Sorry I know this is long but it would be a great video!

Don't think he's an animagus, it was probably just a transfiguration spell that went awry. Remember how literally one of the first acts of magic we see Hagrid perform in the first book was to turn Dudley into a pig, and that he only failed (and only gave him a tail) is because his wand was broken?

You would choose it because an animagus does not need to cast anything when they want to transform. They do not require a wand, a hand motion or anything else. If they did, Sirius likely wouldn't have escaped Azkaban at all. It also brings into question why Krum would need his wand to assume his shark form. I'd say that this is because he isn't one.

In fact, in the book it's the Irish seeker who spotted the snitch and was after it, Krum had just gotten injured and had to catch up to him. In other words, either Krum got the snitch and Bulgaria's loss wasn't quite as bad (which is was happened), or he'd have let the Irish seeker get it and Bulgaria would have lost by a lot. Bulgaria was gonna lose at that moment either way, Krum chose the better out of the two losses.

I feel like its much less of a leap to stop the argument at transfiguring yourself is impossible if you can't wield a wand and that's why he stopped at his head. In the book it was stated that Krum used transfiguration but was yust partly succesfull, therefor stating that his intention was a full human/shark transfiguration which gone partly wrong. Actually I didn't make much of it while reading, because I thought - because of this partly succesfull transfiguration, why would I assume that his brains were that of a shark? Maybe the partly succesfull transfiguration only transformed parts of his head, Like the gills, teeth and the outer look of a shark, while his brain were still his own...

As it wouldn’t make sense for a serial killer (sirius black to still have a wand in the wizard prison nor do we hear of him stealing a wand in the prison. I haven't read the novels in a long time, but I remember a part in which Hermione warned Harry that becoming an animagus was a difficult and dangerous process, and if it failed, you would be stucked with that form forever. I always assumed that Krum did become and animagus but partially failed in the process and that's why he only transformed half of his body.

I'm very curious how you saw "half-man, half-shark" and instantly decided "oh, that must mean he's great in the AIR!" By all accounts, Krum did lose at least some of his intelligence while partially transfigured: he tries to bite through the rope keeping Hermione in place under the lake, an act which Harry saw was likely to end up ripping a leg off, so Harry stopped him and gave him a sharp rock. Given this is the only time in the entire hour he spent transfigured that we see him, we can assume that this is roughly how intelligent he's been this entire time. Also, becoming less intelligent doess not automatically entail losing context for why you transfigured yourself in the first place - I'm sure the thought of "I've got to save someone, they're in the lake" is easy enough to remember wwhen you're smushing complex human emotions down into bitty shark emotions. Maybe if he spent longer transfigured, he'd forget about Hermione, but an hour isn't really that long.

I mean, sharks are basically sea puppies. They are pretty smart, and very curious. Unfortunately they don't have hands or thumbs, so the only way they can investigate stuff is by putting it in their mouths. But yeah, some have even made friends with humans, so I don't think that shark brain would stop Crum from saving Hermione. Dukuwaqa is just Dakuwaqa. A shark-god that is the second most supreme in all of Fiji. He lives in a hole in a strait and people still throw offerings in there. He also gets to approve of the paramount chief of his province, Cakaudrove. Yes it is possible to transfigure a human into an animal, the problem with that is most animals can't hold wands and therefor can't transfigure themselves back into a human. The person still keeps their human mind. I'm sure there is some mental effect, but the person still has their memories and intelligence. In the mobile game Hogwarts Mystery, Murula Snide attempts to transfigure herself into a firebird. Of course this goes horribly wrong and she ends up turning herself into a puffskein. The reason why a human that has been transfigured into an animal can't change back into a human is because a.) animals can't speak; therefore the person is unable to say the countercurse/spell to change them back, and b.) most animals are unable to hold a wand. My theory is that Victor attempted a spell with a time limit in order to turn himself into a shark for an hour while he searched the lake. However, because he's an idiot, he was unable to do the full transfiguration and only transformed his head. Lucky for him that was enough. I will admit that I did not know about the Dukuwaqa and that that makes this theory more plausible, but i still don't think that's the case.

I have some questions going through my head regarding polyjuice: 1. What happens if Harry, disguised as Goyle drinks the Crabbe-Polyjuice? Would he turn into Crabbe or a Crabbe-Goyle hybrid, and if so, would it stay that way or would he turn into crabbe when the Goyle potion wears off? 2. I thought of something interesting when you mentioned an animagus transforms into what animal instincts they have in them and it makes sense for the marauders, prongs being a stag is a proud creature which shows James' pride in his magical abilities. Sirius is a really loyal friend and hence he is a dog, since dogs are loyal animals to friends and family. I don't know that it needed explaining, we see all through the first few books that transformation can be one part at a time with only partial transitions. We see several times where they are transforming even living creatures, and they exhibit strange behaviours of both parts, so it seems likely to me that Krum just deliberately transformed his head to get the swimming benefits without affecting his brain. Reckless maybe, but completely in keeping with what we know from the books. TBH, I think it takes a lot away from the character if he is better because he's a magical creature.
