"put a stopper in death" means to put death in a bottle. (the stopper is the thing that closes the bottle and keeps it air tight). ie "how to make a potion of living death" which they eventually do. he isnt saying that he can make a potion to *prevent* death, but rather one to *cause* death.

My theory: He was prepared. He had the antidote with him and intended to use it. He knew there was some information he had to communicate to Harry, and hadn't communicated it yet. He was going to save himself, and then go find Harry and tell him what he needed to know. But when Harry suddenly showed up, showed up with a memory flask no less, he realized he didn't need to. He wasn't keen on hiding from Voldemort for the rest of his life should Harry fail, and knew that there was a good chance of Voldemort finding out he was alive. He believed he was master of the Elder Wand, and that Voldemort would figure this out. In the end, he just wanted to see Lily.

This would make more sense. The main issue I have with Ben's theory is that even if he was planning on using an antidote, Snape would have used it right away. We never see him taking the antidote, and it wouldn't make sense for him to wait to use it -- he would surely want to use it right away to ensure he is able to use it before he dies. Your theory reconciles this flaw.

@@Sillyrits some antidotes (that's a fact btw even in real life) can be taken before the poisoning. So if Snape had an antidote, he might've taken it before being called to the shrieking shack. but no antidote helps with a pierced windpipe

Theory suggestion: how the frick do the portraits in the Wizarding World work, exactly? They don't make any sense to me. They often can talk, but the person itself is usually dead. Dumbledore's portrait specifically reviews his plan for defeating Voldemort with Snape long after his death. So does the portrait have any form of conscience? Does the "essence" or "soul" of the person transfer into the portrait? Does that mean that Dumbledore is not "truly" dead? Is it some kind of immortality? And why, for example, moving pictures and photographs can't do the same? Why can these portraits interact with people and, for example, Harry's photo book with his parents' pictures could not? How are these portraits even made in the first place? And what does it mean that sometimes the people inside the portraits can "leave" to attend other business? Think of Dumbledore's Chocolate Frog Card, for example. It was shown way back in the first book shortly after Harry met Ron on the train for the first time, and Dumbledore was still alive at the time. How is it possible that the Dumbledore inside the card can come and go whenever he pleases? How many Dumbledores are there exactly, other than the "actual" Dumbledore? And can they all act independently from each other, or it's just one version of him that goes from portrait to portrait? I could go on and on about these frickin' portraits! I NEED to know how they work!

I think that the portrait has to be painted while the person in it is alive, but after it's painted it's like the diary... Only aware of what it is told and what the person already knew at that point. I would like a video about this bc it's only a theory and I have absolutely no idea

I think it was mentioned in the 6th or the 7th book, or maybe on the website, that the person while alive would interact as much as possible with the portrait, so that the portrait possesses an essence of the person. This was especially important for Hogwarts' headmasters bcz these portraits would act as advisors to future headmasters. If I remember correctly, Dumbledore had been training his own portrait for quite some time before he died. It was kept in a closet in his office

I was ALWAYS suspicious when she did NOT mention Snape and his body. That was a huge problem for me. Then I thought how elusive Snape has been thought his life. Severus is at his core: a SURVIVOR. He survived an abusive childhood. He survived bullying at Hogwarts. He survived the first Wizarding War. This man KNOWS how to survive! I have held on to this belief since that book ended. I feel like him dying was the only way for him to finally find peace. He hated everything about his life ever since Lily died, he was miserable and was only staying around because he was loyal to Dumbledore, who needed him. What would he even do, I don’t think I could ever imagine Snape being happy. Could you really see him just enjoying something other than bullying kids? I think he was a wounded soul and he needed to die in order to finally be free. I don’t doubt that he could’ve saved himself if he wanted to, and I think he would’ve in order to talk to Harry. But Harry found Snape and took his memories meaning Snape was finished with his mission from Dumbledore. He was free.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the scene in Dumbledore's office where there is no mention of Severus Snapes portrait when Harry, Ron and Hermione go there and Harry repairs his wand. It's Dumbledore's portrait behind the desk not Severus' portrait. Dumbledore's portrait is there right after he died but Severus Snape's isn't.... this to me is the biggest indicator that he is in fact alive.

I believe he took an anti venom and replenish potion every time he is near Voldemort and negini. He is a potions master after all. The potion slowly revived him and he was able to walk away after giving Harry the last clue he needed to defeat Voldemort. He then hide his identity to live a safe quiet life just in case Voldemort followers want to get revenge. Better to think he Is dead so he can live peacefully.

I'd like to imagine that Snape lived with Draco (who'd be grateful for him relieving him of the burden of Dumbledore's death), mentoring him in a better way, and helping with Scorpius' upbringing. There's one more thing supporting this: Snape's portrait is not among those in the past headmasters portraits, in the headmaster's office. In book 6, Harry saw Dumbledore's portrait just hours after Dumbledore died; why not Snape's a few hours after Snape dies?

It's been a while since I've read The Cursed Child 😒 but I think it's there in that book. However, Snape wasn't exactly loved as headmaster. To all others, his time as headmaster led to the destruction of Hogwarts, he let death eaters torture students, etc. As far as I know, Snape's name isn't cleared to anyone besides Harry in the original books.

Snape's Portrait didn't appear instantly after his death due to the fact that he fled his post as Headmaster prior to the battle. The Magic classed this as a dereliction of duty. It wasn't until after the facts came to light that his portrait appeared in the head masters office & even at that point Harry & others had to argue for it to be kept there.

It suggests that the undead body that rose from the cauldron was capable of fathering a human child. It says that Bellatrix was several months pregnant while she was torturing Hermione. It says that Harry's scar is still active even though the Horcrux is long gone. It even made Harry somewhat psychic. People who have watched the play say it's an enjoyable experience. I think that's because they have a high production value and talented cast for that mediocre fanfiction. Imagine if they made a good play with the same quality production!

Snape doesn’t die from the snake venom, he dies from bleeding out. Snape gets bitten in the neck, by a snake whose venom causes wounds to keep bleeding. The neck holds the carotid arteries, which are the two major blood vessels that carry blood to and from the head. Even if Nagini didn’t aim for the arteries intentionally, At least one of the arteries would’ve gotten damaged anyway. And since the brain needs 20% of the oxygen in blood flow, it would only take a matter of minutes for Snape to bleed to death. Even if he did have an antidote, the antidote wouldn’t prevent death since Snape uses precious time to give Harry his memories. At most, the antidote would make the wound close eventually, instead of having a dead body continually bleed. Thank you for reading my ted talk.

Snape cures Malfoy's wounds when he's bleeding out from the Sectumsempra spell, so it seems he does have the ability to heal very grave injuries. Unless his spell is ounly a countercharm to Sectumsempra, but it seems a bit unlikely. That being said, when don't SEE him use it at all after being wounded, so if he has to wait I don't know how long until Harry and friends are out of sight. But the fact that there exists antidote to Nagini's poison AND a spell to heal grave bleeding injuries, and that Snape is very likely to know about both, does lend credence to the idea he at least COULD have done something to survive.

The whole issue of the venom is a mute point. The venom wasn't a neurotoxin or anything like that, it kept wounds from healing. Arthur lived due to the wounds in the fleshy parts of his body, so he didn't bleed out so quickly - also snakes don't inject on every bite. Snape was bit in the neck. There are 2 nice juicy pipes o' blood there and Nagini was shown to have many teeth which would have most likely punctured one or both. He bled out.

OK ok ok... But how does a badly injured Snape manage to get away and then remain entirely undetected for the rest of his lifetime?... Because he had a time turner on him! A few turns and he disappears to an earlier time many, many decades ago where nobody knows him. There's no need to hide and he can live in plain sight...so maybe he gets a job teaching at hogwarts again... as Defence Against The Dark Art professor! He meets a young dumbledore and tells him everything he knows - obviously Snape doesn't know the whole story about the horcruxes and the hallows, so dumbles still needs to piece the rest of it together. Anyway, this is ACTUALLY why dumbledore trusts him so explicitly, because he already knows what Snape will do for him in the future. It's also why he can't explain to anyone why he trusts him so much - He can't risk of voldemort finding out and changing the entire course of time by killing him another way. Snape, of course, left the battle before finding out who wins between Harry and voldemort, so the ultimate outcome also remains unknown to dumbledore.... I like the idea of him suddenly appearing in a fantastic beast movie, bleeding profusely from the neck and asking for a medic...

As cool as this theory is, it's not possible :/ Time doesn't work like that in HP. If he had went back and became a defense against the dark arts teacher, then he always would have been one from the start (just like Harry and Hermione ALWAYS through the rocks through the window, they just didnt know it was them). Also, Snape is already a very accomplished occlumens, so he would have been able to hide that truth just as well as he has hid everything else from Voldemort. Nonetheless, I still LOVE your theory, because the idea of Snape using a time-turner to at LEAST go back and let Dumbledore know that he can trust him would be so cool :)

Why couldn't it have always happened in Harry's world though? If Snape in the past used an alias, avoided photographs and left (or finally actually died) decades before Harry's story (or young Snape's) takes place, then it seems possible that the dots might never be connected by anyone later on. Anyway, the defense professor bit isn't really a crucial part of the theory... I just thought it would be nice if he finally found some happiness in his twilight years...

I agree with your assessment that Snape was smart enough to carry an antidote to the venom, and likely even had some on him. However, I think if he intended to use it he would've done so immediately, especially if Harry hadn't been there to get the information he needed. But since he was, and he'd accomplished what he set out to do, I think that ultimately when Snape looked death in the eye (much like Dumbledore did and Harry was about to do) he greeted it like an old friend.

Dumbledore playing favorites, and especially choosing to protect marauders from punishment and making Snape stay quiet after "the prank" is one of the biggest reasons Snape wanted to join death eaters, since there was no one else to help him, and his friendship with Lily fell apart. That was quite terrible of Dumbledore, and I really like to think he was actually ashamed of that later on when Snape ended up as his agent

Snape has very little to live for, basically 3 things. 1) His love for Lily whom already chose someone else and then died because of the information he gave to Voldemort about the prophecy. 2) He served Voldemort loyally until it intersected and threatened #1 and has abandoned this value. 3) His loyalty towards Dumbledore who he had just killed for the sake of the mission and now only has his last orders which are to help Harry and fulfill his role as double agent. -By the time Harry collects the memories of Snape, Snape has just finished his final task for Dumbledore and has literally nothing to live for anymore and someone that obsessed with 1 lost love for so long would not recover for the rest of their life, so it's perfect time for him to die narratively and mentally.

I have always hoped that Snape had lived and snuck away. With his "redemption task" completed he would move to a secluded Muggle village where he would brew potions by mail under the name "Phoenix Potions" (since he had been reborn) and send them by owl mail. He would be shopping in the village one day and would meet a lady, eventually falling in love and having his own family with her. Eventually he would get up the guts to see the goblins in secret to gain his Prince inheritance (and possibly change his name to help him hide). Any children he had would now go to Hogwarts as Prince's and would never know that their father was the dead hero Severus Snape.

He's totally dead. "[...] Snape moved no more." Pretty final, compared to the others where they "lay, not moving" or something like that. Plus, Voldemort wanted him dead really badly, I'm pretty sure he wouldn't just trust that he'd die eventually of the poison (he knows Snape is pretty much *the* Potions Master of all Potions Masters, even if Snape covered his double-agentness completely [pretty sure he did] and Voldy had no idea that Snape had any ideas of betraying him, the thought that someone else would find a way to "cheat death" via an antidote might have crossed his mind). I think Nagini pretty well ripped his neck open and/or injected this very potent venom into a major artery, based on the description. Even for a very non-magical way to die, I think Voldemort has seen/caused enough death to know when the job is done.

I love this more than I would have expected. I was always sad Snape didn't live to see Voldemort defeated to close the circle of avenging Lily. And I think it is entirely plausible that he left everyone behind. I like the idea though that Arthur or another Order member found him and helped him leave while they were sweeping for bodies. I feel like someone knows he is alive and will never tell.

I know Snape wasn’t there when Harry used the resurrection stone but neither was Dumbledore and I think he would have a better reason to be there than him.

Idk I think if Snape could even have been in the spiritual presence of Lily one last time, it would have been enough for him to be called. He just died and probably would want to make sure that his mission was carried out as well.

I feel like if Snape did indeed survive, he apparated to Godric's Hollow to visit Lily. He was in the Shrieking Shack. So he could easily have recovered and left without anyone realizing. That’s my theory as to what happened to him. He decided to try and live a normal life.

I like to think Snape is the one who created the Antidote for Arthur Weasley...too much of a convenience that Snape shows up just after the Healers find an antidote...He just could not reveal himself as the supplier of the Antidote...since the Dark Lord has spies everywhere.

Yeah, if Mouldyshorts had just gone off to study in lots of places instead of seeking immediate power he would have lived more than 71 years in a world where wizards often hit 150. It'd be like if we keeled over at 35! What a waste of a brilliant (he had an absurd number of OWLs and NEWTs I seem to recall) mind.
