There are many villains in the wizarding world of Harry Potter: Belatrix, Umbridge, Barty Crouch Jr. and of course Voldemort himself, but today we discuss another great villain of the series who never really seems to get called out as much as he should, none other than Ex Minister of Magic Cornelius Fudge.

they more or less knew why she was blown up, as by that point a closer eye was being kept on him they DIDN'T know why he was performing spells near muggles at the time of his arrest but yes, self defense will usually result in you being arrested until the matter is sorted out, this has always been the case

@@3myr08 at that point they weren't keeping a close eye on him, they knew he cast a patronus because they were told so, and they knew he cast magic in general because of the trace whether the trace can detect individual spells is...unknown but it doesn't really matter they weren't (yet) actively spying on him , and they had no reason to believe dementors would randomly go and attack it's why a huge part of WHY he got off was that someone at the trial secretly ordered (against the ministries wishes) the dementor to attack and forced the spell it was the crux of dumbledores defense of harry

It's the most defining moment of who Fudge actually is: not just a bumbling idiot, but a cold, calculating, politician. For those who haven't read the books, at the end of the Goblet of Fire, when it's revealed that Barty Crouch Jr. was pretending to be Mad-Eye and when Dumbledore gave him the truth-potion, Barty Crouch Jr. began babbling about Voldemort's return. What does Fudge do? He sneaks a Dementor into the room so that it sucks out Barty's soul, getting rid of the only witness who could verify Harry's story. Why? Because he doesn't WANT the public to know that they were in danger under his term. He wanted to make it seem like everything was fine and that he was an effective leader and he was willing to remove a man's soul to make that happen! Here's the full passage: “There is no need to stand guard over him anymore, Dumbledore!” she shrieked. “The Minister has seen to that!” Harry had never seen Professor McGonagall lose control like this. There were angry blotches of color in her cheeks, and her hands were balled into fists; she was trembling with fury. “When we told Mr. Fudge that we had caught the Death Eater responsible for tonight’s events,” said Snape, in a low voice, “he seemed to feel his personal safety was in question. He insisted on summoning a dementor to accompany him into the castle. He brought it up to the office where Barty Crouch -” “I told him you would not agree, Dumbledore!” Professor McGonagall fumed. “I told him you would never allow dementors to set foot inside the castle, but -” “My dear woman!” roared Fudge, who likewise looked angrier than Harry had ever seen him, “as Minister of Magic, it is my decision whether I wish to bring protection with me when interviewing a possibly dangerous -” But Professor McGonagall’s voice drowned Fudge’s. “The moment that - that thing entered the room,” she screamed, pointing at Fudge, trembling all over, “it swooped down on Crouch and - and -” Harry felt a chill in his stomach as Professor McGonagall struggled to find words to describe what had happened. He did not need her to finish her sentence. He knew what the dementor must have done. It had administered its fatal kiss to Barty Crouch. It had sucked his soul out through his mouth. people aren't rational they knew people were in extreme danger and some were being injured or dying humans react to kids in danger with extreme vitriol, had hagrid not been imprisoned at best there would've been riots at worst hagrid would've been hung in the rafters or burnt alive

Fudge himself said he was only arresting him for appearance's sake, but then proceeded to do nothing to make sure they actually had the right man. Even if there had been good reason to suspect Hagrid, there still should've been an investigation to make sure.

In his mind, Sirius is the murderer, and all because of his traumatic experience investigating Peter Pettigrew's death and seeing Sirius Black laughing, Fudge assuming that he did murder Peter (which he did not), and is too darn stubborn to see the truth of what really happened to only which Sirius and Remus Lupin knew the truth alongside Harry when he asked them what was going on. Fudge cared too much about his career and doing the right thing. He was truly the worst.

I will defend Fudge on one account, the Buckbeak thing wasnt necessarily on him. In both the Book and the Movie, Fudge mentions that the committee of the disposable of magical creatures or whatever its called needed a witness to the execution, and that he was ALREADY on his way to Hogwarts to check on the Dementors and the Sirius Black situation, so also decided to be the witness, since it was the most efficient thing to do, two birds one stone. We dont get any information verifying that he was at all involved in Buckbeaks court cases.

One inconsistency though is the school governors. Lucius Malfoy was supposed to lose favor with them after the events of Chamber of Secrets, when it's revealed he threatened their families if they didn't keep Dumbledore away from Hogwarts. Yet when he speaks at Buckbeak's trial, Hagrid says they roll over and show their bellies, ignoring Hagrid's defense completely.

No it was actually on him. He was supposed to be the person who can get rid of the corruption. It was stated after all that the Committee members were influenced by Lucius Malfoy.

I think this was the point where Fudge “changed “. He previously had consulted Dumbledore frequently. He was humiliated by Bukbeat (sp) disappearing right under his nose. (Literally). I feel that Lucious used that to Imperious curse/manipulate him into believing Dumbldore/everyone was against him out to get him. His mannerisms changed. Lucius(sp) was in control. That’s my belief. Sorry for misspellings.

@@nahor88 Hagrid is part giant and Lucious is a pureblood of the Sacred 28 (aka pureblood families where their purebloodness hasn't been tainted by halfblood or muggleborns) he is high up in society. No doubt Lucious donated funds to the right people, politicians included. Also the ministry has a history of discrimination toward muggles (not spelled out directly in the books that i can recall, but i do recall it being discussed in pottermore) and with the ministry allows someone like Umbridge to act toward others not fully human or those not pureblood (despite her being halfblood) and allow her to be in a high positions, and how looked down upon Arthur Weasley's position was at the Ministry- it's not a stretch to say blood discrimination still goes strong there. And that all influenced Fudge (his blood status is unknown, but only that he is not considered of the Sacred 28.)

So, in the wizarding world, it is illegal to interrogate a person using Veritaserum unless the person it is used on knows about it. This is an extremely flawed rule though, because the potion does not work if the drinker knows about it. Veritaserum then, is actually utterly useless in this situation.

philipp ii. Well, in the movie they do, but in the books Crouch is actually out of conciousness. Dumbledore then instructs Snape to get his strongest Veritaserum, which Dumbledore feeds to Crouch while he is still unconcious. He then awakens Crouch with a spell, after which they interrogate him. So Crouch did not have any knowledge of them giving him the Veritaseum, which is why it worked then.

Hey SuperCarlinBrothers! I've had a HP video idea for a few months now and it would be cool if you saw this comment. Even if you don't make a video about it, I still want to share it because it's a recurring theme that lots of fans gloss over. It's the topic of Dumbedore's Griffindor bias throughout the series. Between the ending of the Sorcerer's Stone with the last minute points addition just enough to win against Slytherin house to expelling Hagrid instead of Tom Riddle for opening the Chamber of Secrets, leading belief to try and keep other houses out of a prolonged rivalry between Slytherin and Griffindor. In addition, Newt Scamander was expelled for threatening a life with one of his beasts while Remus, James, and Sirius did the same thing using a student's werewolf status and barely got punished.

Also, it is not clear since when Dumbledore had known that Sirius told Snape how the entrance at the whomping willow works. Maybe it was only as they already worked for the order that Dumbledore found out. Surely he would ask Snapes schoolmates everything about this person before using him as a double agent. But Dumbledore did not know that Sirius, Peter and James became animagi and walked around the school with a full grown werewolf or else he would have known that Sirius would be able to transfigure himself into an animal, so he thought that Remus would sit in the shack until he got human again. I wonder, why Remus never told anybody about Sirius being an animagus after his escape from Azkaban. But maybe it is just the "don't trust the werewolf" thing again.

The events of Prisoner of Azkaban I'll give Fudge a free pass for two reasons. In the area of Buckbeak, a different branch of the ministry is trying the Hippogriff so Fudge is letting them do their job. Also Dumbledore points out that without proof, like Pettigrew's body, they can't overturn Black's conviction. Thus the reason Fudge fails there. The rest of what you said is correct.

Actually, Fudge first gives a hint of his true colors when he sends Hagrid to Azkaban which he also does to be seen as doing something. I am surprised you didn't quote Dumbledore in his heated conversation with Fudge in the hospital wing at the end of "Goblet of Fire." Dumbledore says it so eloquently - that love of the office has blinded him and that he could take action and be remembered as one of the bravest Ministers for Magic, or do what he does and be remembered as he will be: the one who stepped aside and let Voldemort gain power again. By the time Fudge is out at the beginning of "Half-Blood Prince" it's already too late: Voldemort has been able to manipulate set up the fall of the Ministry. Of course, Rufus Scrimgeour isn't a lot better - he too focuses on appearances - wanting Harry to be his poster boy. But is Fudge the worst? Well, worst what? Worst Minister for Magic? Perhaps, even likely. The worst person in the story? No, I think that still goes to Umbridge. Fudge is rather pathetic. He is a coward and is easily manipulated. But apart from his office, he doesn't really command any power. Umbridge, on the other hand, while she does take advantage of her position (and Fudge's manipulability) to gain and weild power, is resourceful on her own and quite prepared to torture people - even children - herself. Fudge is analogous to Wormtail, only unlike Pettigrew, he actually gets some power of his own. Still, he doesn't have real power in himself - inner power. He has to rely on bigger, better bullies. Pettigrew brings about the return of Voldemort to his body, but he is still personally weak, commanding less than zero respect. Likewise, Fudge did hire Umbridge, but she is the real powerhouse. He's just an enabler.

You forgot to mention that he sent Hagrid to Azkaban in book two, because they believed he was the one who was releasing the Monster of the Chamber of Secrets. His reason was that the ministry had to been seen as doing something. It was the first sign that he wanted to keep his job, and not do his job that we got.

Indeed. The Ministry probably knew that Tom Riddle was Voldemort and that Myrtle wasn't killed by an acromantula; so they should have realised that Hagrid did *not* open the Chamber of Secrets. It would have made sense to question him further, to see if he remembered something that might help in capturing the current Heir of Slytherin; but arresting him was completely unwarranted.

Its because James did not sacrifice himself for Lily. He never had the chance to sacrifice himself. Voldemort would have killed him no matter what. The reason he did not want to kill Lily was that Snape had begged him to spare her life. She was able to sacrifice herself because she was never supposed to die.

There's your answer - you've just answered your own question - because she could have lived - and chose to die. James was going to be killed anyway. Do you see what I mean? I'm not saying James wasn't ready to; he died trying to protect his family, but he was going to be murdered anyway. He had no - he wasn't given a choice, so he rushed into it in a kind of animal way. I think there are distinctions in courage. James was immensely brave. But the caliber of Lily's bravery was, I think in this instance, higher because she could have saved herself. Now any mother, any normal mother would have done what Lily did. So in that sense, her courage too was of an animal quality but she was given time to choose. James wasn't. It's like an intruder entering your house, isn't it? You would instinctively rush them. But if in cold blood you were told, "Get out of the way," you know, what would you do? I mean, I don't think any mother would stand aside from their child. But does that answer it? She did very consciously lay down her life. She had a clear choice. ES: And James didn't. JKR: Did he clearly die to try and protect Harry specifically given a clear choice? No. It's a subtle distinction and there's slightly more to it than that but that's most of the answer.

0:53, also considering how quick to change how he viewed Harry, he was willing to almost laugh off him blowing up his Aunt but tried to get him expelled from school and risked his well being by letting dementors attack him just to force him to use magic outside of school in the presence of a muggle just to validate demonizing him. Also, he failed to realize Voldemort was still around even before he took his body back..........like in Harry’s first year..........or Harry’s second year with the memory in the diary. Had Dumbledore wanted the job he could have taken it, but as least some like Barty senior could have, though they seemed to have a false sense of security in Fudge. 4:16, their is a possibility that Fudge and the ministry denied Voldemort’s return was something Voldemort himself knew would happen and counted on. The fact that he returned during the time when the likes of Fudge was in charge seems kind of perfect for his planning. It meant that if he played his cards right, he would be able to abuse the weakness of this government to more easily assemble his army and prepare for his takeover.

I completely agree! I cannot deal with Fudge! I've been reading the series this year for the first time, I KNOW, let's move on from that point, but I was snapchatting my best friend after finishing Goblet of Fire and all I could say was "FUDGE IS THE WORST!" And after reading Order of the Phoenix I still thought Fudge is worst! I don't like Umbridge, obviously, but I don't think she's worse than Fudge. To be honest, I thought I would loath her because of the way people talk about her but I was actually disappointed because I thought she was going to be more brutal. BUT SO MUCH COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED IF FUDGE HAD DONE HIS JOB AND DONE THE RIGHT THING!! I'm still saying he's the worst, and then Peter Pettigrew- Peter Pettigrew is despicable and a scumbag... and then Umbridge.

I. HATE. CORNELIUS. FUDGE. SO. F*****G MUCH. I just reread HP4 and him arguing with Dumbledore at the end of it makes me so much more angry than I remember being the other (several) times. I think I hate him so much because I don't believe he's evil, he doesn't even have any other motive for the shitty things he does other than his own INSECURITY, SELFISHNESS and FEAR. UGGGGHHH. He's grown fond of power and like Bill said deep down he knows Dumbledore's a cleverer and greater man than he will ever be, but he can't bring himself to face the fact that Voldemort had returned and had grown fond of power and managed to convince himself that he's the clever one and Dumbledore's making up trouble for the sake of it, because he just can't bring himself to the fact Voldemort had returned.
