Remember, it’s a quote from the Bible. I sometimes think Rowling included that because she wanted to get on the Church’s good side after all the controversy. If she really wanted to avoid it in the first place, she could have just left out the word “witchcraft” and made “wizard” gender-neutral, though I’m not sure it would have been quite the same. “Hogwarts School of Wizardry.” It doesn’t have quite the same ring, does it? The quote does fit very well, and you have a good point in applying it to Dumbledore. It’s a cool thought.

Lol I'm late, but I always paired it back to Book 1 where Dumbledore says "To the well organized mind, Death is but the next great adventure." Dumbledore has always maintained there is nothing to be feared from death and there are worse things than it. So I think it genuinely means living beyond the 'end'

@@senamilemadlala2655 for sure! also, that dumbledore quote is highly, highly reminiscent of ancient greek and roman philosophy, wherein the human soul is immortal and lives beyond the body's death. a number of ancient philosophers have extensive recorded texts about how death shouldn't be feared and should be embraced (like an old friend, even), when the time comes. idk if rowling intended this, but her books acquainted readers with integral greek and roman philosophy, and also the christian understanding of death being able to die. fascinating, frankly!

Thought : Dumbledore, could very well death. But as he gave away his powers ( the original brothers ) he himself could not pass on or rest until their was one master of death. Thereby reclaiming all this powers again. This would also add to his actions, knowing Harry could be the only one to collect / own / control all three of the hollows. Dumbledor manipulated events to make it so.

Something like, for example, destroying the blood pact that Grindelwald forced him into to keep him out of the fight. Newt will be taking care of Credence. He's the one that has experience with obscurials.

One of the things I think is paramount to the story is that defeating death is possible, but not in a physical way. Physical immortality is ultimately a curse. It's the mark you leave in the world and the people who's lives you touch. Harry will be remembered forever for defeating Voldemort, but moreso through his friends and family and their memories and stories.

I've always been a fan of this theory for all the reasons you said. Also, it's interesting that all 4 of them (HP, Voldemort, Snape, & Dumbledore) are half-bloods and hence outsiders to both the Muggle world and the magical world, they all feel most at home at Hogwarts, they all try to "find themselves" through trying out new kinds of magic, and they all come face-to-face with death in different ways.

Was rewatching and thinking about the invisibility cloak, quick question. Pottermore article on the Potters says James’ parents saw him marry before they died and then passed on the cloak before Harry was born. He married in 1978, the same year he graduated Hogwarts. However, it has always been my understanding that James used the cloak at school to achieve mischief. Is this a misconception?

In The Elder Scrolls lore community we talk about this kind of role-taking as Mantling, and because it's a core mechanic of the setting we actually describe a couple of distinct kinds of Mantling. Amusingly, Harry, Dumbledore, Voldemort, and Snape all Mantle by way of the Fourth, the Steps of the Dead. Though Harry also Mantles by the First, the Prolix Tower, which is how he escapes Ignotus' Doom.

If Dumbledore became death then Harry has too as he had in his "possession" all at the same time the three deathly hallows. He didn't have the wand but it obeyed him because eh had defeated Draco. The elder wand belonged to Harry.

Given that Snape never uses the hallows, I think it more likely that HE is Death; Voldemort is then Antioch, Dumbledore is Cadmus, and Harry is of course Ignotus. This is supported that Snape has interacted with all three and is instrumental in their deaths: he finangled the elder wand for Voldemort, in turn causing a chain of events that would finally kill Voldemort; handled the resurrection stone for Dumbledore after the horcrux was removed; and while he never handles the invisibility cloak, I should note that his relationships with Dumbledore and Voldemort are as professional as it gets and sour, while his relationship with Harry is personal and doused in grudges AND yet he gets friendly with Harry in death.

I always felt that the people who represented the 3 Hallows in many ways were actually Harry, Ron, and Hermione. Ron, the youngest brother who wanted fame and power. Harry, the lonely orphan who wanted his parents, and Hermione the bookworm who would appreciate the the invisibility cloak and what it has to offer. She understood the moral of the story.

I’ve seen a comment saying that on Lily and James’s gravestone it said “The last enemy destroyed will be death.” Funny how the descent of Ignotus manages to defy death, which could possibly be Dumbledore, seeing as that Harry succeed in winning the war without death beside him, having cheated him twice. Funny how these things work so well in the Wizarding World.
