I felt like the big deal about why Belle's father didn't want to speak about the death of his wife wasn't just because she died of the plague, but rather that he had to leave her to die alone. Can you imagine that level of heartache? He sacrificed his last moments with the woman he loved for the chance to possibly save his child (which obviously we can look back on and say was a good decision in retrospect). Moments where she suffered and died a terrible death alone. He wasn't there to ensure she was buried, he has no idea what happened to her body or how much longer she survived after he left. That's a heavy burden to bear.

Danielle Smith I thought so too! I was actually surprised when watching this how much I disagreed with of the critiques the brothers had. LaFou can be both intelligent and illiterate. Adam in the beginning can include "diverse" women in this balls, but still be a bad guy (he just values youth and beauty and apparently isn't racist. That doesn't make him a good person). And the Beast can have embraced his animal side (notice how he created a nest in his bedroom) with the idea that he was no longer deserving of behaving like a proper prince, but still be well educated. On and on.

Sonnie Travels So true. And the brothers said that they don't see how being in a city versus being in a village relates dying from a plague. I'm pretty sure the plague was spread by rats in the city. Being in a small village with agriculture and fresh air and cleanliness I'm sure gave Belle and her father a less chance of catching the plague, which is why Maurice says small means safe. It all makes perfect sense to me.

I agree, when a girl gets her nails done and gets fake attached acrylic nails, applying makeup or fake lashes with those nails takes time getting used too. Imagine big beastly hands with long claws trying to hold a tony spoon and only get small drops of food at a time, by the time he gets halfway through it, the soup would be cold lol

Another moment of defense for Maurice if I may, when he told Gaston that he'd never marry his daughter, he had literally JUST witnessed his temper and LaFou calm Gaston down by having him remember the horrors of war (thought apparently not so horrible for Gaston) and all of the widows he slept with there! Also, obviously Belle and Maurice have an incredibly close relationship and discuss many things. I'm confident that she would have vented to him previously about her feelings about Gaston's pursuit of her. You saw in the beginning how much she detested the idea of being his wife and I'm sure Maurice knew about that.

Yes! An anger issue is probably one of the worst attributes a father could see in a potential future son in law. Even though it was a bit out of place for Maurice to say it to Gastone like that (especially if he does have anger issues), it at least can show the audience that Maurice can see that something is not quite right with this guy.

my mom and I saw it last night; we both thought Gaston was a lot more human-like and likable at the start, and it kinda seemed like while the Beast was becoming less of a beast and more of a man, Gaston was becoming less of a man and more of a beast.

I thought LeFou was so much more likable in this movie than in the cartoon. Which isn't necessarily because cartoon Lefou was really bad, but he never had that redeeming moment during the castle battle, and he never really had a personality or any... depth. Josh Gad did a great job bringing that character to life more and making him relatable. But not being able to spell Gaston was part of the original song so... yeah that's why he couldn't spell it. Though I liked the way he messed it up better in the cartoon.

Historically speaking, small towns were much safer from the plague than cities. (Fewer rats, bug, animals, and people and therefore fewer vectors for the disease.) Royalty used to flee to the country during plagues... so the "safe in a small town" thing kind of makes sense.

But still it was weird because they looked so different from the 1991 version and were unrecognisable from that version Beauty and the Beast (2017) is obviously trying to be Beauty and the Beast (1991) as much as possible so that's why it doesn't make sense to me), and it was set in Europe at least 200 years ago, where other races were scarce to find in Europe (relatively: there were still some).

I love the review guys, but if you think about it, the plague was a big city problem at the time the movie takes place. Because Paris (although amazing now), wasn't all bells and whistles. Because of sanitation problems, the plague was far more likely to happen in heavily populated cities than tiny villages at the time. Just thought I'd mention.

Let's Kill Time I agree but also because of merchants that could have lived in the town and because of the silk road there is a pretty sound chance that the plague would wipe out the town as well, although it seems that at the time the movie was taking place the plague was gone.

SO did a quick google to figure this out. The black death is split into three major pandemic periods that nearly wiped out all population regardless of city vs town. Between those times the plague was epizootic. Meaning it was mostly smaller cases in largely populated areas due. So yeah small town would be safer. I really think Disney did much more in depth research.

Gaston shooting the beast from behind is foreshadowed in Gaston's song. There's a whole new verse where Gaston describes his hunting tactics include sneaking up behind the animal and shooting them in the liver. LeFou asks "is that fair?" Gaston answers "I don't care." This hints that during the fight Gaston is going to shoot the beast in the back and isn't going to fight fare. Also, Disney never named the beast. It's just the beast. Not Adam.

I think the reason they add the part about Belle losing her mother is because the servants reveal that the Beast lost his mother as a child and they stood by and let his father turn him into a brat. Therefore Belle and the Beast both lost their mothers at a young age and this is another connection point for them

Hahaha I liked that during Gaston's song there was another nod to Harry Potter too, the "10 points to Gaston!" made me laugh a little. I also really like that Lefou's defection from Gaston wasn't an immediate switch, that Lefou was already somewhat troubled by Gaston's actions and behavior. Lefou was trying to nudge Gaston to release Moris but didn't dare to go too far to antagonise him; and also, when the villagers were on the way to the castle, Lefou's words were, "there's a monster alright but I fear we've released the wrong one".

But beyond that i think the guys are forgetting most of the population in these times where illiterate. That didn't mean they where stupid or not verbally, emotionally and culturally intelligent. Education of the spelling and advanced reading caliber was reserved for the rich or at least the urban living individual. In small towns almost no one could spell. And dictionaries didn't exist, some words where up to interpretation. For instance we know Queen Elizabeth the first spelt sister "sistar". Glad someone pointed it out 😀

Back then, women couldn't choose who to marry though. It was their fathers who had to give them the okay and pretty much showed them a man to marry. Am I not correct on this? So Maurice did have a right in saying that considering he is the one responsible for Belle's choices of marriage, not Belle at this point of time.

Not only that, but Gaston showed his true colors right when Maurice couldn't find his way back to the castle. I think the bit about diversity you mentioned at the beginning doesn't matter too much, because all of the servants were beautiful (yes even Cogsworth, sir Ian McKellen is a handsome man). I don't know what you guys aree on, but I hated that. It made the Beast so much more unlikable during the scenes where he was trying to actively gain her favor and be nicer to her. Instead of showing the library to her because he thinks she'd really like it, he instead does it because he very rudely wanted to make a point about her taste in books. It's an awful change.

@@cherrychocolate1434 I agree, it felt like negging! my whole feeling about the beast was that he was much less likeable. He doesnt tell her about the west wing which makes his reaction really unfair in this version He also doesnt have that instant regret in the animated version He criticises the things she likes, but she only had a limited amount of books to read so... He also doesnt give her the library because he wants to do something for her, he shows her it to make a point which really takes something away There are a few moments where I feel like he's putting her down, and his whole character arc felt less... redemptive, i don't feel like he learned anything, so I dont feel like he earned her love...

I was also thinking that traveling preforming troupes might have visited and done scenes from great plays. During this time there were traveling minstrels and troupes. So a traveling troupe could have preformed parts Of or a whole play as well as possibly preforming more than one play during their stay. If so, that could be how Gaston knew the quote, as well as some of the village knowing things without reading them in a book. As someone who also has dyslexia and was put in learning disabled classes, I didn't read Romeo and Juliet let alone most of the "great works" we were subjected to during middle and highschool ( Most for good reason!). I didn't read Romeo and Juliet till I was in my late twenties. I knew the story. I saw the play preformed. (My father was an English major) I also saw different movie versions of that play as well as Hamlet and others. So it is feasible that the community or the people who could afford to, saw plays from traveling troupes and that is how they can know without being able to read. It might also be possible that as children someone who could read, did read to them on occasion. Of the two ideas, the traveling troupe(s) seem more of a possibility. If . . . I Know this is long winded. sorry.

It also shows that Gaston doesnt play fair. I mean, Adam just spared his life and how does he repay him? By shooting him TWICE in the back. I feel like that's worse than a literal stab in the back like in the original version because it really shows how Gaston is too cowardly to involve himself physically in the death of Adam. We also got a sort of foreshadowing of Gaston's attitude in 'Gaston' when LeFou sings 'Is that fair?' when Gaston was bragging about shooting his prey in the liver from behind to which Gaston retorts with 'I dont care'.

I think that the rose in Paris wasn't a pen, but actually Belle's baby rattle. That rattle was in all of Maurice's paintings, which is why Belle asks for, "a rose, like the one in the painting." Maurice was captured by the Beast because he picked that rose for Belle, which is actually what happened in the original Villeneuve Beauty and the Beast story. The scene in Paris explains why the rose was prevalent to Belle.

Boys, the plague was common in large city centers because of multiple factors: lots of people, "itty bitty living space", poor hygiene, bare minimum waste removal. Diseases were easy to catch because conditions were great for bacteria, and lots of it. Remove yourself from that environment (as many wealthy and powerful people did), and you're less likely to get sick. So Belle and Maurice moving to their small, provincial town, very probably DID save Belle's life from what killed her mother. Also, the 'jingling' thing Belle brings back with her is a rattle shaped like a rose, not a pen.......

No Y.Pestis can not survive long without a host body. It can sometimes grow dormant, but that happening with inorganic materials is not very common. Besides as I am pretty sure belles mother had the pneumonic or bubonic (They are not really clear on the symptoms as she was coughing and there was swelling... no idea where the scratches on the face came from as the bubos generally form on the lymphnode and when popped form large rings of infected tissue) {Mind you neither of which are pretty bubonic has you dying from essentially open sores and cellular death[gangrene not fun]. Pneumonic has the victims lungs liquefying to be vomited up, yes not fun.} Either way even if there was Y.Pestis left it would not infect belle or her father, as it is infectious through coughing they would have gotten it either way...It was a known death sentence for the entire family if even one member got the plague....it was common knowledge that the rest would be dead in a week if they stayed in the same vicinity. So belle and marius must be two of the lucky few that got it and survived to become immune, defeating the purpose of leaving to a small town and leaving the mother/wife either way.

This is especially true, as many scholars view "Romeo and Juliet" not as a serious tragedy, but Shakespeare writing a satire / "black comedy" to make fun of the trope of "love at first sight", which was incredibly prevalent in his era. "The Tempest" and "A Midsummer Night's Dream" also feature this trope, but in a very overtly comedy-centered format. This may point to the Beast - of all people - being more educated than Belle! Especially since he seems to call the work "cliche", which Shakespeare also likely poked fun at, and the Beast, having a classical and "expensive" education including literature studies, pokes fun at it as well. There are quite a few literature in-jokes, and that's one of them. www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/37doub/is_it_true_that_shakespeares_romeo_juliet_is/

The back story was pretty cool because it explained why the beast just all of a sudden kid napped Maurice. In the original it was just you are trespassing and now I am taking you prisoner. The story is set in the middle of 17th century (late baroque/rococo), therefore there are so many decorations and details on buildings. It is also too early for the French revolution (1789) , if it was after the prince (aristocracy) would have lost his property, even could have been beheaded. So Gaston and LeFou are probably veterans of Seven Years' War.

Ella Duncliffe Nowhere else?. There were thousands of people murdered for witchcraft during the inquisition. The Salem trials were tiny compared to the ones in Europe. Also, no one was burned in Salem, & there were 20 victims, not 3. The victims were either hung, or "pressed" which is described as, a person is put on the ground, a board put over them & then rocks are piled on it until the victim is crushed to death. There are MANY places that had witch trials. Look up the Bamburg trials. The inquisition from the 15th to 18th century is estimated to have burned 30,000 to 50,000 people. Later some were also burnt for being protestant, not just witches. Mary Tudor queen of england burned hundreds of innocent people.

Theory: Hermione Granger and _2017 Belle_ not _original Belle_ are related. This Belle is almost definitely a witch, and we know Hermione is a muggle born witch. What if this Belle is the witch that Hermione has the magical gene from. They’re both played by Emma Watson, both are seen as weird for different reasons, both love to read and do research before doing things, and both like breaking the rules. They’re both thought of as tomboys longing for adventure, but end up *NAILING* the look of a beautiful girl. But yeah I mean Belle seems like she could be a witch, and Hermione is a muggle born, so what if Belle gave birth to a squib, they had a muggle child, who has a muggle child etc. etc. until Mr. and Mrs. Granger give birth to Hermione. I’m not sure if it makes sense because I couldn’t get enough research needed, but it makes sense to me

Boys, I had to do a bit of digging, but the Enchantress was likely included for a reason...her name is not a coincidence! She, 'Agathe', is likely Bill Condon's take on the nanny / guardian of the "Lost Dauphin" of France, Louis XVII. Her name in real life was Agathe Mottel de Rambaud, and from the Crown Prince's birth onwards, for seven years, she raised him as his surrogate mother. She even loved him as her own son (her own husband and daughter died long before she did), so much so that she tasked herself with his expected return, and "learning responsibility to one day rule the French people". She was also historically noted for seeming "unusually young for her age, even as an old woman of 70". In the "Beauty and the Beast" film, it may be implied that it was Agathe (the Enchantress) who raised the Prince after his mother's death, which would also be in-line with the original version of the fairy tale. However, this back story may have been cut for time purposes, or to prevent the film from being "overstuffed".

yeah! but in that story didn't she curse him because on one of his birthdays (I forgot how old he was) she thought he was really handsome or something and asked for his hand in marriage and him being really freaked out obviously said no and she got very angry so she cursed him so that he could never find love?

In one version, yes. In reference to what historically happened in real life, that particular version doesn't really fit the tale. In real life, Agathe de Rambaud was basically the "Grandmama" character in "Anastasia", only as a mother-figure to Prince Louis XVII. However, there are many different versions of the "Beauty and the Beast" story, with historians dating back the tale to ancient Rome. The live-action "Beauty and the Beast" seems to be a version separate in itself, merging some real-life history and historical events with magic, to form what appears to be an "alternate historical timeline". For example, Louis XIV, "the Sun King", is depicted as Beast's father in the portrait with Beast (as a child) and his parents in the film. However, on the other hand, the Beast himself seems to be based on Louis XIV's great-grandson, Louis XVII. Disney / Bill Condon likely took and merged these story lines, it seems, for the films, with the historical turning point being Louis XIV getting his second wife (implied to be Beast's mother) pregnant with their son (Beast / Prince Adam). Likewise, Agathe seems to be part of the "Lost Dauphin" story or fairy-tale (which, in turn, later inspired the story of "Anastasia", with the trope of "lost royalty") that was merged with the "Louis XIV as Beast's father" one. I wrote about the historical basis more in-depth in my post here: www.reddit.com/r/FanTheories/comments/606acb/beauty_and_the_beast_the_untold_story_of_beasts/

If you're talking about Agathe (the Enchantress), that's probably because she was purposefully hiding or disguising herself to keep a close eye on the Prince / the Beast.

Fun fact: The Enchantress' book was part of the original story of Beauty and the Beast written by Madame du Beaumont, that's why it was included (apart from telling us Belle's mother story). The name of the village Villeneuve was also another reference to the original story because the original author's surname of the story from which Beaumont took the idea of writing Beauty and Beast was Villeneuve. Layton pro 🎩⚡ if we go off of the animated version 10 years have passed. the average full rose has anywhere between 26 to 40 petals. the beast was extra so we will go with 40. in the animated movie, we start in late fall and go all the way to when the snow melts lets say late October to March (5ish months) in the live action 3 or 4 petals fell, averaging about 1 petal per month/month and a half. one petal per month means that the rose has been actively wilting for 40 months or 3 years. but, if you look at this as if it was a hour glass with sand. the closer you get to the end, the faster the sand falls. therefore, the rose could have been wilting since day one, but 1 petal fell every few months. i cant give you a solid answer saying which way, but in the animated Lumieer does say to cogsworth "the rose has already begun to wilt" specualting that the wilting has recently begun.

I've figured it must be 10 years for the outside world, and time either stopped or moved more slowly for the castle. This movie seems to clearly confirm that the castle characters did not age while they were transformed (the prince is clearly already a young man when he is cursed, for example).

I am a music university student, so maybe not as experienced as a producer, but I work with this sort of stuff too, and the effects on her voice did sound slightly electronic, I mean, you could tell that something had been put on top of her vocals. And for people not familiar with filters, limiters, EQ and so on, would probably just call it auto tune. But I agree with them that keeping it more natural would have worked better with the historical aspect of the film, than trying to make it perfect and almost over-doing it a bit.

I think you guys are kind of over thinking the beginning with the prince turning away someone for being different. Those diverse people weren't "ugly"... I mean honestly they weren't. the prince valued beautiful things and so when the "ugly" person cam seeking refuge he was repulsed but her looks. So he made him as ugly on the outside as he is on the inside. Hence the title Beauty and the Beast. Belle is beautiful, but she's not cocky or judgemental and I think that's what the Beast learns from her. That there is more to a person than just their looks.

I loved how the movie made me get feels of other movies. Like the mob song scene, for example, really gave me Les Miserables feels. And in the Beast's ballad, Evermore, he sings, "Come what may," which gave me all the feels of Moulin Rouge ("The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return" GAHHH MY HEART). Of course the various reminders of Harry Potter was also prevalent and warmly welcomed. I loved everything about the movie. It's so so beautiful. And the addition of making the Beast have "an expensive education" and him loving literature and words as much as Belle was wonderful. My favourite scene would have to be when they were on a walk in the snow and Belle was reading to him and they walked over a bridge and the Beast comes to a gradual stop because he's suddenly so awed and captivated by the beauty of the frozen lake that was enhanced by Belle's words and he asks her softly, "Is there more?" That scene is so beautiful and made me breathless and I think I fell for both the Beast and Belle right then and there. Sighhhhhhhhh

And going by the way he knows society and strategically meets the conditions to flow through it till he realizes that life could be better because of the castles atmosphere and that there is no use in flowing through it or trying to stay on top by any means, such as when no one listens to him anyway and Gaston would let him die, he just bes himself and doesn't have to rub the smart firewood together as much

Icarus lilith I totally agree. I actually thought the exact same thing while watching this video. Especially since he gets half way through spelling it and then gets all nervous because he realizes that reading is part of the reason Belle is such an outcast.

that's actually a great way to look at it. I mean i know he's smart. Just because someone is smart it doesn't mean they can read or at least aren't very good at it. Looking at it like that he realized that people would judge him for being able to read so he acted dumb. makes sense!

She actually wasn't heavily auto-tuned. She sang that whole song live on set and it made it into the movie. Sure its touched up, but its actually not as intense as people seem to think it is. That's just what her voice sounds like.
@rickygee1233
@rickygee1233 6 жыл бұрын
She sang the song live but did a prerecord in the studio and played it over her own voice so back ground noises wouldn't get into the way of her singing. When Emma sing 'Paris of my childhood' That was live and not a prerecord. And that's one of the times she doesn't sound electronic. She was slightly auto-tuned and I wouldn't blame her for getting mad at the directors etc for doing that to her voice because she actually is not half bad at singing considering she's an actor.

Thank you I'm finally glad somebody's pointing this out she is not auto-tuned it probably was polished a little but not much I've heard her raw recording sessions on KZbin I know that's her voice that we here in the movie and it's not half bad but people also have to remember she's an actress not a singer and she's also not vocally trained like Paige O'Hara so on all those notes kudos to Emma Watson she's not an excellent singer she certainly gets the job done.

regarding the french revolution - although Gaston wears a revolutionary hat I don't think it's the french revolution yet - the beast is still in power as a prince - he would have been in hiding or dead if it had been the french revolution, even as a beast he would have known and probably given up on finding a girl, took the book and escaped with his cutlery to a deserted island or something. . . furthermore there's a priest in the village, and the revolution killed priests. the revolution is coming, as the guillotine and storming of the castle foreshadow, Belle and beast probably won't be living happily ever after, but it hasn't occured yet

I thought the decision to give Gaston a gun was great, it made him so much more of a coward. He couldn't get up close and personal there was nothing honorable about it he sniped from far away. So even though it felt like less personal passion I think it made gaston a coward which is part of what they're showing
@IreneShardaForever
@IreneShardaForever 7 жыл бұрын
Well, technically by chivalry and honor standards, it's also quite cowardly to stab someone in the back as well. Especially while they are in the midst of addressing their loved one and they have just spared your life. So, Gaston was being super cowardly and dishonorable in both versions.

Ann Elizabeth also, I feel like this beast is more muscular then the cartoon one (whose size seems to be all over he place) and that this gaston is a lot less muscular and big (which is fine because the cartoon one was over the top for a real person) that it makes more sense for him not to try hand to hand combat because he would just get thrown around like a rag doll
@IreneShardaForever
@IreneShardaForever 7 жыл бұрын
You think the beast was LESS muscular in the cartoon version?! The Beast is huge in that version and his muscles are almost 5x bigger. Yes, he does change perspective size wise throughout the movie, but during the fight at the end, he's much bigger than Gaston (cartoon version) and bigger than his live action version by far.

Miss Hoepfl I don't think so, moaning Myrtle must have way older then James and Lilly considering she died 50years ago and looks like she is no older then 16, so she would be in her 60s at the time Harry is in school, his parents would be in there 30s/40s.. there is a higher chance she is his grandma, then his sister or aunt..

I don't think the war Gaston fought in was the french revolution. Aside from the fact that, that war meant the end of monarchy rule in France the timeline doesn't add up. The film makers said that based on the set design and costumes in the film the story would have taken place somewhere around 1750-1770 (note the original book was written in 1740). The French Revolution took place in 1789-1799. If I had to speculate based on the that time line Gaston most likely fought in the Seven Years War which ended in 1763.

I didn't know that the writers had given a approximate timeperiod, I simply went off the existence of the plague doctor's mask as a reference and came to the conclusion of a possible 131y timeframe though the lack of worry about the plague implies that it's now gone/becoming rarer and matches up with the timeframe you mentioned (though presuming Belle is 18 here as she is in the animation the latest possible year would be 1768 rather than 1770)
@CinnamonToast
@CinnamonToast 7 жыл бұрын
one thing that bothered me about the timeframe/historical accuracy is the mention of the plague. You're right, the set design and costumes are totally mid 1700s, but the plague swept through Europe in the 1300s. It's such a massive gap - 500 years - that I sorta had trouble ignoring it. Even if the movie takes place near the end of the plague when it was becoming rarer, we're still much to far off for it to be remotely plausible that Belle's mother died of the plague and Belle was 17 in the 1750s.

A couple thoughts on Gaston: 1. I really liked how Luke Evans portrayed him. The animated movie gave him so much over the top rude characteristics (and that giant chin), but we get to see him as a loved (and very beautiful) member of the community. 2. As Gaston was going up the stairs talking about him and Belle, he grabbed her skirt, which I found to be very creepy/scary/intimidating. 3. Gaston gets worse as the movie progresses, which sort of ties in why Belle was so against him at the beginning of the movie when he was small minded, but not bad. Since she can "see with her heart" and all that, it's a cool sort of pay off once the Mob Song came on.

Personally I believe gaston wasn't defending Maurice selflessly he was doing to gain something and I think Maurice says that belle won't marry him because he knows belle and he knows gaston and he knows that belle won't marry him which is true. I think every thing gaston does is for personal gain he doesn't truly care about belle
@JW-tf5fh
@JW-tf5fh 7 жыл бұрын
Melissa Bonner yes but their point is that if this was your first iteration of the story and you hadn't seen the cartoon, neither you nor Maurice would know that he was doing it for personal gain and at that point in time before Gaston shows his true colors, Maurice's reaction was totally unreasonable at the time

My favorite part of the movie was during the fight between the Beast and Gaston when Gaston calls him a Beast, and then the beast chooses not to kill him and says, "I am not a beast." before putting him saftly on the ground. I think that one line pretty much sums up the entire message of the movie; Don't judge others by the cover of their book. Honestly, it's the best part of the movie in my opinion. I also quiet enjoy when Belle gives her dad back the rose from her old house. I thought that scene where she convinces him to trust her, and that she actually loves the beast and that he's good man inside also speaks to the true message of the movie. I thought Belle's relationship with her father was really quite beautiful, and the fact that he loved his wife so much was really quite fantastic.
