Beetle horsepower is a funny thing. Non vw guys laugh at our small numbers but don’t realize just how light these cars are. 120hp bug will whoop a mustang at a light. My little fiberglass Manx feels like the front tires will come off the ground and it only makes about 70hp :) I pulled on my buddies 400hp impala ss and he just about crapped his pants. Lol. I know a "Dub" guy who rebuilt a 1600 DP with a single deuce for a dune buggy and put a relatively hot cam in it. After he broke in the engine and changed the oil, he took it out on the street in front of the house and proceeded to pull the front wheels off the ground so high, that he stood the dune buggy on its exhaust pipes, destroying them. That ride scared the crap out of him so bad, that he took the engine apart and put in a more mild cam, which still allowed the front wheels to come off the ground and still be able to see the road in front of the car. This allowed it to be more streetable, and still make good HP & TQ.

It's hard to be sure from the video, but are the wheels running significantly forward of the center line of the roller? If so, is it safe to move the car back so the tires are centered on the roller (I don't know anything about proper dyno operation)? If the center of the rear wheels is in front of (or behind) the center of the roller, then the camber in the rear will force the tires to scrub sideways to some degree as the rotate. Imagine if you had a roller right at the back of the tires (at the 9:00 o'clock position looking at the right tire). Here the slip angle of the tire would match the camber angle. The scrub will be much less when the roller is near the 6:00 o'clock position, but only at the 6:00 o'clock position will the scrub be zero (assuming a zero running toe setting). I don't know how much power the tire scrub could eat up - probably not really enough to be noticeable. Somewhere in the one horsepower range wouldn't surprise me.

Hey do you think It would work on a mini cooper 1.6L with stock injection? What is the relation os the engine rotation and the charger rotation?
@thedubshop4 жыл бұрын
It would probably be a little small for a mini. The rotation here is clockwise, the supercharger inlet is on the bottom and the outlet on top feeds the engine.
@JamesVollmar-wt1pq2 ай бұрын
A mini supercharger stock is a m45. Which is 45 cubic inches. So the amr 500 only equals 30.5 cubic inches. A little small. Now of course if you port the supercharger and run a smaller pulley with water meth injection to cool intake temps it would be fine. I am running a m112 supercharger on a 350 sbc. Heavily ported and polished with aftermarket aluminum heads. I make 8lbs boost with a small pulley at 594 hp. Dyno. But I'm overdriving the blower having to precool it with water meth to keep temps down .

Mario Velotta Jr I like it your paving the way for maximum reliable hp out of a stock motor. You ever thought of twin charging
@thedubshop6 жыл бұрын
As in turbo as well? Or twin superchargers? I would love to add a turbo to the mix...
@V8N8T6 жыл бұрын
Mario Velotta Jr yes a turbo as well:) that way you have the s/c for low end grunt and the turbo to kick in for some serious fun! I dont know how well the s/c would like pressure pushing past it but a diverter valve to route the higher boost "around" the s/c should help with that

We used to race the shit outta these in Mexico. Swapping out motor and trans from VW buses 🚌…. Fun fact EVERY old body style beetle was made in Puebla Mexico up until 2004. You can literally get a 2004 beetle that looks just like this one and really the only difference is basically the fuel injection and the radio. You can get a super tricked out bug from Mexico for 5-6k…. Not sure what the import fees would be to make it legal I. The USA but it would probably still be less than half what doing it in the states would cost

Here because i love flat engines but this was a bit sad i swapped a honda gl1500 engine in my mgb and it put down 110hp 130tq weights way less and revs higher without boost 😂 this is cool but maybe start with something that has nice heads to begin with.

I'm glad I watched this to the end. 90hp and 130ft/lbs for a 1.8/2.3l supercharged? What a wimp.🤣🤣🤣 This makes sense. 30 or 40hp gains and probably double the torque from stock is awesome.
@smokepeddler3 жыл бұрын
An NA 1835cc with a 120 cam and 40/44 cadrons gets 100hp. This set up makes zero sense.
@housepumpinpc39833 жыл бұрын
@@smokepeddler not really. A stock motor gets you 50-60hp with 70 ft/lbs. You don't have to change anything internally. Outside mods. And that supercharger is cheap. You couldn't boost a 1.8l with this supercharger but turbo 1.8l would kick azz.

Braking on a bench results in the invalidation of all measurements! Dynamic losses due to inertia must be taken into account in the wheel power calculation! In addition, the rear wheels are "against" the rollers instead of being above them, centered.
@cameronkendall91134 жыл бұрын
can someone tell me why you are boosting your motor just to get 90whp... you can build a way more powerful motor w out running boost
@thedubshop4 жыл бұрын
But getting 90hp from a stock long block is cool. It pulls like a 2L. I even had to upgrade the clutch since it was slipping at low boost numbers.

Torque. Torque moves the car. Have you driven a boosted Beetle before? It’s epic

Great stuff Im running a 1776 with 10 psi boost interesting to see the numbers that your making. I have water meth injection to install and I reckon ratio rockers and maybe msd would help. Have you thought of adding these? I also run a reece fish carb so would be like injection that your running
@thedubshop6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I do have a water injection system in use. Without it my intake temps are over 200 degrees F. Ratio rockers are something I would like to try one day. Since I am running LSx coils already I am not sure I have much to gain with an MSD system. I also don't trust them much with as many failures that I have seen from them.

well congratulations.. about as much power as a stock 1.9 L turbo diesel TDI Vw motor..but with a lot more noise, expense, complication and 1/10th the reliability.

Power 👍 Noise 👍 Fun 👍 Creativity 👍 Getting 90+ hp from an engine that originally only made about 50hp 👍 Proving the idea can be done 👍 Increasing drivability & reliability exponentially by using EFI 👍 Having fun doing the research and investing time in something you enjoy 👍 . Cost of developinment 👎 Some asshole pointing out the lazy way to achieve the same result without realizing that the result is only a part of the goal 👎 . Not giving a shit what the asshole thinks 👍

how do you put a water cooled turbo diesel in a Beetle? KompressorHaus get 101 real hp out of a 1641cc engine. Double normally aspirated power. The car weigh around 800kg. I have a 1955cc VW with twin IDF and that scoots. Probs only makes 110-120hp!!
