Jonny is not just a guitarist, he is an artist. Same as every other member of the band. This is what makes Radiohead so special.

So this has become my favourite thing by Radiohead. I've listened to this specific performance more than anything recently. It's utterly perfect. And at 2:03, Phil and Clive look adorably like a couple of curious pigeons.

The lyrics here are switched around a little to "I have dislodged my illusions/I have jettisoned my depression" and I actually like it better this way. See? Radiohead is not depressing.. These are some of the most positive and sincere lines I've heard.

Thank you for saying that, I have always thought this is pretty much the brightest, warmest radiohead song there is. It is very full of optimism.

+Ozoceanic what about Optimistic?
@keithbecker31427 жыл бұрын
It is really awesome to see that some of the lyrics have some real physics, and actually have to do with particle accelerators, which some called supercolliders. The line you are talking about starts with "I am open, I am welcome, for a fraction of a second"... Thom is talking about the window of opportunities that physicists have to capture the aftermath of particles colliding inside an accelerator. They are capturing images of the subatomic particles in a certain small section of the miles long tube after atomic particles collide at almost light speed. In fact, these collisions and subsequent explosions happen very very fast and go away just as fast, 1 millionth of a second or less. And then they do this again, millions of times, in order for a better chance at getting a "capture". Most of the other lines in the song have some relation or metaphor to particle physics, even line the "blue, red" lines. So in your line I would take "dislodged" and "jettisoned" to both mean the break up of atomic particles to subatomic particles by collision. You'll have to decide for yourself what the "illusions, depression" words really mean.

Supercollider, this song, to me, is about CERN. the Large Hadron Collider. Attempting to create and study what happened during the 'big bang', dark matter, parallel universes, among other things. "I am open, I am welcome, For a fraction, Of a second". If they manage to 'create' it's only a fraction of a second. "I've seen the angels hanging over the balcony". We're tampering with things that shouldn't be tampered with that even give angels interest.

The genesis of the song is from 2003 when they were on tour and driving between Houston and Dallas...where the Supercollider was being built in Texas (like CERN). That's when the first sketches of the song started popping up during that 2003 tour.

"The Angels hanging over the Balcony"... always reminds me of "Angels on the Sidelines" from 'Right in Two' by Tool... just watching these humans who have gone so beyond themselves that They can't help but watch in Awe and anticipation... that tightrope between the Desperate and the Divine... that humans seem destined to keep trying to walk, knowing there is no safety net. no one *really* knows if what CERN is doing is safe or not... it wouldn't matter to them anyway. we have been *there* before... ( ummmm, Sir, I am not sure this will be safe.... 'Just carry out your Orders, Son.')
