Monster Energy Supercross

Күн бұрын

Before Carmichael and McGrath, there were the supercross legends of the past: Bob Hannah, Johnny O'Mara, Mike Bell, David Bailey, Ricky Johnson, Jeff Ward, Ron Lechien, Jeff Stanton and more. Now is your chance to catch a rare glimpse of how, over twenty years ago, these hisotric riders battled on the racetracks of yesterday to pioneer the sport of supercross and turn it into one of the most popular motor sports in the world today.

I think this was the year I flew from California there with Ricky Ryan and Dean Matson when i was 12 years old. Ended up after the race at the Blue Oyster for dinner and sat across from Ricky Johnson and at the table where factory Honda people. Then, went to the oyster bar and had oysters with Roger Decoster , the Man. What an experience.

Meh. I hardly notice the light show. That era had its time. This era the tracks are much faster, which adds another dimension of excitement. All eras were good for their time. Wouldn't want to replace any of them. One thing that, unfortunately, hasn't changed much is the yell in your ear announcer. This guy's almost as annoying as Ralph Shaheen.

Man, look at how hard the track works against them, and how unfriendly the suspensions were in the day. Now they have plush suspension, and they set the track out with perfect spacing for the jumps and whoops. Not saying they were better, just saying it was harder for them.

@@mikehuncho7547 I've raced MX for over 40 years, recently into classic MX, I am well aware of the tracks. I have never seen a modern track with anywhere near the size of the ruts we contended with, one of my pet hates btw, or how hard packed it was back then because they were rarely touched. If there was a big event on, the track may have gotten a grader go around it.

Rainier Beer was the sponsor of SX then. I remember Coors was in 1988. Then beer and cigarette sponsors of racing (car racing too) got attacked by political activists who said such sports should not have such sponsors because children enjoy the sport too,--and there goes a bit more of our free market.

Little known fact Omara was on meth during most of the later races in his career like this one. He has said that he would stay up for 2 or even 3 days before a race and still go out and win. Now a days the difference between first and 10th is a few seconds. It’s almost impossible to make a career out of supercross or nationals now
