I love the minimalist build on this. I’ll bet the weight savings was considerable and with that engine it must perform quite well.

If you had a dozen people build a Super Cub, you would get a dozen variations. That's the beauty of experimental aircraft. They are the perfect airplane, for the builder, to fit the needs of the builder. Cookie Cutter airplanes, (certified) are great for most pilots, but even they wish they could have just that one modification to make it just that much better for them. Which is why experimental aircraft are so important to keep alive and growing. They lead the way in innovation, and in my humble opinion, they lead the way in fun! Excellent video showcase of yet another gem in the world of experimental aviation. Cheers from Winnipeg.

That is a great project! It's great to see people stepping out and making better planes. Get rid of the red tape and look what you can have! Safety is important and the reason for certified aircraft regulations but the bureaucracy has grown so large it has stopped innovation. The homebuilt world brings us back to 20's style aviation!
@ackack612
@ackack612 2 жыл бұрын
NOT true....to say that bureaucracy is the cause demonstrates both a lack of knowledge and understanding of the GA landscape. One only need to look at the very dated engine technology in certificated aircraft. And it's not going to improve anytime soon, but NOT due to bureaucracy. If that were true, if bureaucracy was such a hindrance to innovation, how do you explain the myriad options available to EXPERIMENTAL builders/owners?
@GreatMichiganBushCo
@GreatMichiganBushCo 2 жыл бұрын
@@ackack612 you don't think bureaucracy is hindered development of the certified aircraft market?
@ackack612
@ackack612 2 жыл бұрын
@@GreatMichiganBushCo No, and I'll tell you why. It's purely market driven. Look at the ever increasing age of the GA fleet, not just the US but world wide. Prices for new aircraft are astronomical which further depresses the market. Let's stick with engines, which I mentioned before. Unlike new automotive engine technology which might ultimately sell 250,000 units or more, the number of new piston driven aircraft sold in any year is so low, by comparison, (barely in the 'hundreds' for any manufacturer) that a company like Continental or Lycoming can't possibly justify or spread development costs over thousands and thousands of units like the automotive engine designer and manufacturer. Look at the price for a new engine from either manufacturer. It's mind boggling that "technology" that is so old costs so much! It doesn't make sense....or does it. The manufacturers sell so few engines that in order to keep the factories open and reliably producing new engines, they have to charge these eye popping numbers. Doesn't leave much room for new designs/technologies which, upon development, of course are than subject to rigorous "bureaucracy" in ongoing safety protocols and that's a good thing, I know you agree. And, of course, it seems you can't read a newspaper without learning of yet another GA crash. Which drives insurance rates up, rules and conditions often become more onerous. We won't even mention this litigious society we live in. The list goes on and on. So buying that 30, 40 even 50 year old plane becomes a viable option and one more new 172 doesn't get sold. Google production numbers for any new GA aircraft and it all comes into focus. Which is just another way of saying it's all market (such as it is) driven. And here in the US we have the best GA environment of any nation world wide. No Sir, it's not bureaucracy, just numbers and as we all know, numbers don't lie.

So well said. That’s why I’m building a 1929 Pietenpol. It will take a long time. But I’ll spend less than $20k and it will so rewarding vs writing a check for an overpriced used plane.

Great Build!!! Dad and Son Cub!!! I all in on the Utility Operational Controls, and Baggage Areas! I'd forget all about Nitrous, and Rig in a Turbo! Forget the Intercooler, your gonna do Fine without an Intercooler!!! Go Go Go Family!!! Oh by the way, I advised Hal Stockman on the "Forget the Intercooler"! Better bring down the Compression tho!!!

Great video, did you by any chance ask him why he wouldn't incorporate the left door on another build? Is it noise? Additional Airframe bracing/stress? Something else? Thanks

Now THAT is what hardcore home building is all about. But I seriously doubt it was truly 100% scratch built, in the absolute sense. I'm guessing he bought wheels, tires, bearings, avionics, engine, and the like. :-/ :-) And yeah, I'm being somewhat silly. It's just when I hear scratch built I think truly scratch built, casting, machining, etc. Tires, bearings, many other things, yeah, there are things you should leave to the professionals. Kidding aside, very cool. Best line: "lotsa getting shocked on the TIG machine"
