The first and biggest murder in the story is that of Stannis. Having his daughter burned in his presence, when in the books she remained at Castle Black, remains the series' first major aberration. I could absolutely believe that Stannis burns Shireen, even watching as it happens; IF it was to save mankind as "Azor Ahai", seeing it as his duty. If he was willing to sacrifice Edric Storm, shouldn't he be willing to sacrifice his own child? The biggest issue for me is that I see Stannis as a man who cares deeply and genuinely for duty, who has two advisors, one on each shoulder, put oversimplified arguing for utilitarianism and deontology. Melisandre presents the argument that since Stannis is the Chosen One, he has a carte blanche to do whatever, because if he fails, the world falls with him. Davos argues that a bastard boy is "Everything", even against a kingdom. Burning a child alive is never, ever the right thing to do. Stannis' story, for me at least, is so compelling because of how this struggle to determine what is Right intersects so well with Stannis' history. Stannis is the charmless middle child feeling unwanted and slighted, deeply sceptical of being told he is Special, but eventually coming to believe it, in part because of the "evidence" he sees, but also because deep down he wants so badly to be wanted and seen. He ends up believing in a lie, as we humans so often do, that's just our nature; but it will, I think, lead Stannis to do desperate things "for the greater good", all in vain, all because he fell prey to our fallible human nature that is so hard to make work with a utilitarian approach to morality. Stannis is such a compelling, flawed tragic figure, and I think the show really failed to grasp that.
@betcheck Жыл бұрын
Indeed, Stannis' character was poorly treated during season 5. But I think that even if his choice is unforgivable, sacrificing his daughter perfectly completes his narrative arc: Stannis is so convinced of his destiny that he's willing to effectively give everything to fulfill it. It was also one of the show's most heartbreaking and moving moments, and it's why we love GoT. Best of all, it was also one of only three post-book events that GRR Martin revealed to D & Dumber before they took over the script (the other two being why "Hodor" and Bran becomes king at the end).

And look how the general population treated her during her walk of shame.. and there has been previous hatred towards the rulers of the 7 kingdoms, Cersei never quite understood this as well as Margaery did. So Dany comes, does Cersei leave anything to anyone really? Is it her possible escape to die quickly? Perhaps this backfires and wildfires go of here and there not even leaving something for Dany to rule over, her dragons being responsible for creating a very deadly chain reactions... this is more likely to cause her to lose her marbles as well...as she is part of committing genocide, now she would just rule over ashes

As much as I hate season 8 there's no denying that Jaime's arc came full circle. He was ALWAYS conflicted between honor and loyalty but he never questioned his love for his family and Cersei. He was a Hateful man for doing the right thing (killing the Mad King) and we see how Jaime constantly struggle with right from wrong because the line is blurred because of blind loyalty, oaths and honor. That's what the whole "fuck loyalty" arc was about... In the very first episode he said "Things I do for love" and later in the show we realize that he would do anything for Cersei no matter what.

They get nothing out of Bran the Broken being king. I mean christ the new king gave away the biggest kingdom just cause big sister asked. While we don't see much of the Reach because they whittled it down to two families there are still likely families like the Hightowers and the Redwynes who aren't gonna be pleased that a sellsword has been made Lord of Highgarden and Lord Paramount over them. So there goes the Reach. As for the Westerlands are they gonna have any respect for the new hand who by all accounts is a kinslayer?

I think the writers thought he was better liked by the audience than he was. Sending Jamie back to Kings Landing was also ridiculous, it completely wasted his redemption arc. Either way, the writers ruined what was an exceptional series and they’ll never be able to save it.

Remember that Tyrion said that Sansa's real strength of will was the ability to see what she really needed to do and make it not obvious that is what she is doing. Then Season 8 Sansa attributes her growth through the pain she has been in, which is fyi very toxic.
@7PlayingWithFire7 Жыл бұрын
Like ask yourself why arya, who is such a shit character in the show's later seasons, is so beloved while sansa is the most hated? Because sexism. People love Arya cause she's a psycho who is a tomboy, has masculine features. So they decided to make Sansa motivated by r*pe, flexing it. Which is antithetical to the sansa character in the books.
@Irose_YTBE Жыл бұрын
@7PlayingWithFire7 it's misogyny disguised in feminism. Arya being a ruthless and capable female character is good on paper, but the show wants us to see Sansa as "weaker" cuz she doesn't take on masculine traits and characteristics to survive like Arya did. The show doesn't want us to believe Sansa is strong for being smart and capable in her own way, rather her strength has to be rooted in the violence done to her for being "too womanly". Very sick stuff
@johnnye877 ай бұрын
@@7PlayingWithFire7 Yeah I like the contrast in the books between Arya, who openly rejects the damsel-in-distress role and finds a way to forge her own path, and Sansa, who learns to lean into that role. She makes her enemies (and lots of readers...) underestimate her, but she also learns to make people love her, and we haven't seen how that will play out. I see her ultimately getting a similar vindication to Ned's style of leadership (though hopefully without the beheading) - that while both she and her father looked like naive patsies in the short term, the ability to inspire true loyalty and devotion in people is extremely powerful when you're fighting against opportunists who are hated & feared by their own allies. Case in point: Dontos was a patsy, and Sansa was foolish for trusting him. But if he was loyal to Littlefinger, then why did Littlefinger have to kill him? Because his devotion to Sansa was true enough that LF knew he couldn't trust him not to take her side in the long run. Maybe "life is not a song", but the series has shown us a lot of knights - Jaime, Barristan, Brienne, even Sandor - who really do WANT to be riding a white horse to defend the honour of a beautiful princess, if only the world were really like that, so giving them that fantasy to fight for is not something that should be underestimated. Assuming everyone is as cynical as you are is the cynic's greatest blind spot.

They literally had two better endings for Cersei with Arya and Jamie. They could either fully redeem Jamie by having him kill Cersei (which makes sense since he was all about protecting the people). And it would be heartbreaking for both of them. Or have Arya kill Cersei using Jamie's face (which she would finally use the faceless skills on the final season and kill another one of her list). Plus, imagine the scene of having Cersei feel super-extra betrayed seeing her brother stab her and before dying seeing Arya remove the face, feeling that not only she was killed by a Stark, but that her brother is also dead. I think that would be so much more impactful then a bunch of bricks and an incest love story... And Bran... Imagine having a character with literal super-powers and the guy just stares, stares some more, says one-liners, stares and uses his powers once or twice in some crows. And then stares some more. And I think you forgot one other character that was ruined: The Night King. He was a silent menace. A dude with super-powers that could create new walkers. A guy that has a massive army. @alicelaybourne16204 ай бұрын
@@shibernyan2009 Here's how Arya killing her works best. Jaime knights Brienne and then dies at the Battle for Winterfell against the undead. (God that could have been impactful), Arya and Brienne are shown cleaning and preparing his body and Arya asks Brienne to leave. Arya takes the now fallen hero's face and uses it to become Jaime who travels with the Hound to King's landing. Arya kills Cersei (does not reveal her face so that Cersei only feels ultimate betrayal as she dies). Why this works: Valonquar prophecy that she will be killed by her younger brother (books make a point that Jaime follows her out of the womb holding on to her ankle), Cersei is the top of her list for revenge due to the Dire Wolf killing, the blaming of the butcher's boy and his death, and of course the death of her father. She repeats the list all the time. So Cersei is very much a part of her story arc in the show and the books.

I'd say the very first character who was wasted by poor writing, was Barristan Selmy. He's one of the most legendary knights of Westeros who served the Mad King. He could have been a major player later on and especially for the mad queen plot. Instead, he was jumped by a bunch of thugs in an alleyway that served no purpose to his or anyone's character development, nor did it drive a plot. He was only killed so that David and Dan could meet their shock value quotas. It's a shame, considering how interesting of a character he was and the potential he could bring.

I agree with all of these, but my biggest disappointments were the 3 Lannisters. I 100% agree with what you said on Tyrion. With Jamie, I was so mad when, instead of following the book version's path of separating himself from Cersei when she writes the letter saying she needs him, show-Jamie seems to re-dedicate himself to her, so we never get the fascinating inner conflict of him coming to terms with the fact that she's toxic. I subscribe to the theory that Jamie will end up being the valonquar and I thought the Jon-stabbing-Dany scene would play out between Jamie and Cersei instead. With Cersei, I couldn't believe how little the death of Tommen affected her. Her children were her life and that was such a huge part of her character, but her last and youngest child jumped out of a window because of her actions and she just took his throne and moved on. There was nothing for her to protect anymore, so it was hardly some big betrayal or change in character to leave once the revenge was completed and safety was ensured. I maintain that cutting such pivotal characters/plots from the story are the biggest issues for these characters' storylines. Cause cutting out Young Griff is detrimental to Dany: the false dragon thing would cause so much conflict for her and actually explain why she would torch King's Landing. Cutting out the valonquar part of Cersei's prophecy ruined her ending and Jaime's (cause I'm certain Jaime is meant to kill her but they chose to have Jon kill Dany instead so they couldn't do it twice). And cutting Lady Stoneheart is what ruined Arya because so much of Arya's story is tied to the Riverlands and justice and revenge and how she's on a collision course with the husk of her mother and is going to give the gift of death to finally put Caitlyn's revenge quest to rest. Caitlyn slaughtering the Frey's makes way more sense than Arya doing it and turning into a weird psycho killer. And the gall that Dan and Dave had saying 'who has a better story than Bran the Broken?' when they were the ones to fully cut him out for an entire season is astonishing.

Stannis needed to be on this list. Kind of for the same reason as Euron. He was ruined in adaptation. The story beats are there from the books. They are just mangled. They show him out right having sex with Melissandre and have him out right murder Renly, both of which aren't true for the books. Stannis explains that he was asleep when Renly died and should have been preparing to do battle. So he cannot have intended to kill Renly using magic if he was going to do battle. Clearly he was not aware of the exact methods Melissandre intended to use against Renly. The second strike against Stannis is when the writers make him go hat in hand to the Iron Bank to beg for money. In the book it was the reverse: he was seen as reliable and able to win by the bank, as they sent their agents to seek him out and give him money so he can become king and make good on the debts of the Iron Throne. They also remove how much Tywin and Randyll, some of the most competent and feared commanders and leaders, are afraid of Stannis or at least see him as very dangerous. "Stannis will fight to the bitter end and then some." They turn Stannis into a desperate madman, when book Stannis in the same desperation tells people not to burn people but pray harder. They make him sacrifice his heir, when in the books he tells Justin Massey to use the money from the Iron Bank to put Shireen on the throne if Stannis is killed. Then they produce handwavy writing to cause Stannis' army to be desperate and have him use no scouts and have him march into charging enemy cavalry and have Brienne bump into him on the battlefield and kill him. Just unfair. He deserved so much better.
@janjanbinks17103 ай бұрын
REAL In the books he has his flaws but they make him a more well rounded and realistic character. In the show he's just some religious nutcase . What makes Stannis stand out is his sense of duty. He tries to be just even if it meant being harsh. Honestly Davos' POVs are my favorites in the book because of how complex his dynamic with Stannis is. Also the fact that the men who fight for him who DON'T believe in R'hllor/The Lord Of Light are called the KINGS' Men while the ones who do are called the QUEEN'S Men gave me the impression that he isn't a zealot who loves burning people just for funsies. ("No Burnings, pray harder") ALSO THEY FORGOT ABOUT THE PEACH. THE PEACH!!!!!!!!!!! C'MON I don't remember the exact phrasing but I think he said that he was advised to send Shireen away to where the Stonemen affected by greyscale roam and he refused, summoning maesters and healers to try to cure her instead. This doesn't seem like the kind of guy who'd burn his daughter. RIP Stannis "The Mannis" Baratheon I hope I ever get to read what happens to him next if The Winda Of Winter ever gets published
@psevdhome3 ай бұрын
@@janjanbinks1710 I second everything you said. Perfectly encapsulated. In the book Stannis doesn't want to be king. He simply realises that he is the heir and it is his duty to do so. It does not belong to another so he must be the king and save the realm. The showrunners said that his flaw was ambition, when that was literally the opposite of why he was doing it. If he was ambitious, he would've feigned loyalty to the throne, become Joffrey's advisor, quietly fill the council with his own men, and then had the heirs killed in secret to become king. But Stannis wanted to win the throne fair and square. He is the opposite of ambition. The removal of the peach scene is a crime. As well as Stannis' barb at Renly: "I'll tell you she[Margaery] came to my bed a maid." Stannis: "In your bed she's like to die that way." BURN! It also shows that Stannis was able to sus out a personal secret, that Renly and Loras were lovers, something which is not open or common knowledge in the realm. Stannis is also the one who figured out the incest of Jaime and Cersei, and Stannis told it to Jon Arryn. That also nerfs Stannis' character.

@@psevdhome Omg YES PRESICELY What a gross misunderstanding on the part of rhr writers. Sure wanting the Iron Throne SEEMS ambitious on the surface but Stannis doesn't want it because he's power hungry. He doesn't have big ambitions, he is doing what he sees as his duty. If anyone has ambitions it's probably Mel who sees him as Azor Ahai and misinterprets her visions to fit that belief and even then it's not a political ambition for her or his personal gain, it's a "We gotta save the world from an existential threat and impending wintery doom" ambition. If he was ambitious he would've been way more cutthroat like all the other players, but this just isn't him. He is nobody's first choice but he marches on because honor dictates he must. I am sure this whole debacle brings him no thrill. Also that Renly roast. Lmao. In the show he's sooo devoid of personality. I know he's supposed to be cold and harsh but he's not entirely lifeless!

I think Jon is the most ruined character because of how much potential he had and how many of his stories just weren’t given a satisfying ending. His arc about being a Targaryen never went anywhere and he may as well have just remained a bastard that Ned Stark fathered with a random Woman. I never saw Dany as a caring person. I always found her to be narcissistic and grandiose, and her exhibition of compassion was just an extension of her savior complex. That's what makes her turn at the end even more hamfisted: The foundations for her going mad after she's not accepted as the savior she believes herself to be (as if any amount of such acceptance would be enough for her) were there from the very beginning. D&D just *really* dropped the ball during the final play.

@psevdhome Жыл бұрын
And in the book Brienne says once to Catelyn to allow her to avenge Renly and kill Stannis and then forgets about it. It's not a major character development for her. It's more that she doesn't think vengeance is necessary anymore in the later part of the story. If we ever get the book and Stannis and Brienne meet I doubt that she will think killing him is right. We kind of have the reverse situation already in the books. Loras wants to kill her because he believes that she killed Renly. So Jaime convinces him out of it. But the pertinent lesson for Brienne is that blind vengeance is not justice. ...and also Renly deserved to die for being a usurper and a traitor, there is no justice or law that allows Stannis to be executed for bringing justice to a traitor.

One thing that absolutely infuriates me about the mad queen arc is D and D (and people who support how the story wrapped) will point to all these subtle hints in earlier seasons, not realising that they only work as LONG TERM build up, to show she was always capable of something like this. It IS NOT a replacement for the short term build up of such an act, which feels rushed and is just poorly written. Those slow build up moments would have worked so much better had we had a decent amount of a season atleast to show the short term causes much better. Also it would've been so cool to see a darker Jon, one that doesn't trust as easily and is ruthless to achieve what he thinks is right. We saw tiny glimpses of it when he executed Ollie and I got quite excited, but in the end literally coming back from the freaking dead doesn't even matter. Doesn't change him in any way, doesn't even serve much of a plot purpose other than giving Jon an excuse to leave the NW. And can we all take a minute to acknowledge the absolute waste that was the Golden Company? Could've been a cool wild card if you'd introduced some of their book lore (doesn't need to be blackfyres, could just make it so they were formed from houses exiled over the years by the Targaryens) would've made them atleast slightly more interesting if they'd come to support Cersei because of their ancestral hatred of Targs than a generic mercenary company with some Jaime Lannister stunt double who do nothing but get absolutely obliterated by the Dothraki.

See if Dany’s arc into darkness had been handled and executed as well as Jinx’s from Arcane, maybe I wouldn’t hate it so much. But because they rushed it so badly, it didn’t come from a genuine place and it never felt like it was earned in the way it should be. Jinx starting a war after embracing herself as the forever failure she’s never been able to escape? That’s powerful. Dany torching an entire city? Stannis isnt a cruel asshole who murders his brother because he wants to be king or who would kill his daughter at the sight of the slightest inconvenience . Hes a traumatized child who watched his parents die and who values duty above all else, rather starving than giving up his brother's castle. Rather freezing in front of Winterfell than giving up his duty. Tyrion isn't a funny and good person who protects the downtrodden and is horrified when witnessing atrocities. Hes "his father writ small". He is a bitter person who remembers all the slights, real or imagined. He kills Shae, not out of self-defence but out of a feeling of betrayal when he sees her in his father's bed. He turns a singer into soup. He rapes slaves. Hes not a hero. Cersei isnt some kind of cunning schemer. Over the course of the series, she gets more and more paranoid. When she tries to emulate her father after Tywin's death, it all very quickly turns into a complete shitshow at the fuck factory. Arya killing people for revenge isnt badass, it is sad. She's a traumatized little child soldier, not a badass girlboss. Loras isn't just gay, hes a badass warrior who would die to protect his family. Renly is an asshole. Brienne isnt embarassed about being a virgin. More importantly, her entire thing is loyalty and vows. She would NEVER abandon Sansa to get revenge. "No chance and no choice"

I was hoping for Stannis to be in number one, but yeah I agree with all of them except for Jaime, Stannis should definitely be here And I will never forgive D&D for ruining Littlefinger and Varys, my favorite characters and they were the most intelligent characters, and D&D can’t even write a fitting ending, I HATE D&D for that They also ruined my boy Stannis, THE MANNIS, they ruined badly

Tbh it’s actually incredible how Tyrion, Jon, Daenerys, Arya, Bran, Cersei, Jaime, Varys, Littlefinger and Euron were all ruined, but we can’t forget the others who were all ruined in various ways. Stannis- everything in his last two episodes Ellaria- making her stupid and bloodthirsty Everyone else in Dorne- obvious reasons Yara- not having her demand independence and having her laugh at the idea of electing a king when that’s literally ironborn culture Sam- regressing him into his season 1 self in The Long Night and getting Edd killed Sansa- she became so arrogant and obnoxious in the latter seasons with how she treated her own family Harry Strickland- what was the point? Thorne- why let Jon through the Wall with the wildlings if you kill him later anyway for letting said wildlings through? Jaqen H’ghar- he really just lets Arya go and does nothing? Meera- she just gets thrown out, basically. After everything she did for Bran. We never hear from her again after she heads back home Tormund- “What kind of man climbs on a fucking dragon?” Bronn- he becomes so annoying in the latter seasons because he’s just constantly making dick jokes and that’s it Barristan- the greatest swordsman alive getting shanked by some dudes in an alleyway may be poetic, but it’s still a major letdown considering Barristan’s book plot Osha- she deserved a much better send off than what she got. The way she came to love Bran and Rickon was so wholesome Davos- he actually suggested the Unsullied start their own house… Grey Worm- the way he massacred all those Lannister soldiers with Dany, then let Jon and Tyrion both live? Aeron Greyjoy- he was only in two episodes, yet he apparently died at some point and we have no idea when or how. Euron says to Yara that they and Theon are the last living Greyjoys, so Aeron’s dead, I guess? Would’ve been nice to address that. But D&D probably just kinda forgot he existed

Show-Euron literally only had one/ two moments where he seemed *truly* frightening- when he first came onto Yara's ship, he brought the Jack Sparrow-meets-Freddie Krueger terror a person like Book-Euron was capable of- & a bit later, when he was fighting the Sand Snakes- he struck me as ruthless & scary. It gets undercut by every other scene that he has- but those were the moments that showed his potential. I suppose the only argument that _could_ be made with his 'Hot Topic guyliner swagger pirate'-act, is precisely that- that it's an act - but wouldn't that necessitate there being more connective tissue between the two? Letting the audience see just *how much* of an act that his public/ courtly behaviour is? It comes across as really weak characterisation, in the end- not a surprise that they failed so monumentally on deeper writing levels, given 'themes were for 8th Grade book reports'...

Even in his attack on Yara's ship that was really more of a Victarion thing

D&D made Bran accidentally evil. There was no point in him telling Sam to tell Jon he is a Targaryan, unless he wanted Dani and Jon to fail as a couple and Dani becoming a genocidal mad queen.... so that he could become king?

Rhaegal dying in King's Landing would actually be ingenious.

Think Jaime hurts the most because he’s honestly the best character in not only the show but arguably the books as well and he’ll never get that recognition. Next to Twyin his casting is unmatched and unlike Tyrion who was ruined from season 5 and onward in my eyes, Jaime still had hope. We will never have Nikolaj as Jaime Lannister again. He will never get to be Goldenhand. Tragic and as much as I blame D&D, George deserves a sliver too.

littlefinger and jaime remain the 2 most painful for me. for starters littlefinger was so enigmatic at the beginning i couldn't help but sit there giggling whenever he was on the screen- and jaime! don't get me started on him. literally one of the most fantastic redemption arcs ever obliterated in about 5 minutes. it was truly catastrophic and unforgivable. soooo depressing

Personally Jaime and Brienne should either never have happened or he should have died in her arms after they coupled up. I get that D&D we’re trying to fulfill his dream death “in the arms of the woman he loved” but the whole sleeping with Brienne thing really changed the format of how that scene would play out

Alternate video title: top 10 GOT characters still alive by season 7. Because D&D ruined everyone.

I’m surprised the Night King didn’t make this list, however he would’ve needed to be added, not replacing any of the mentioned characters since you hit the nail on the head with this list.

I’d have put Sansa in a least honorable mentions. That shit dialogue they gave her about she wouldn’t be the what she is if it wasn’t for Littlefinger and Ramsay… Gives me nightmares

How is possible that Stannis isn't even in the list lol? He could be easily in top 3. From how she burnt his daughter to his comic relief military plan against Boltons in the end.... I mean c'mon

I disagree on the Jaime bit. It made perfect sense for him to try and save his twin sister. Even if he hates what she has become, even if he does not want to be with her, but with Brienne. Nobody is just going to let their twin get killed. He went there not to help her win, but to help her get the fuck out of Westeros. If Daenerys had promised that she would allow Cersei to go into exile - a promise she would have broken of course - then he would likely not have set out to try and protect her. Also Daenerys? I called her being Mad King 2.0 the moment she let her supposedly only family be killed by her hubby. Which, okay. That is done better in the books and she does regret it and feels guilty about it in the books. But we saw her doing evil shit everywhere. She also murdered the nobles - even those innocent - but there we excused it because "they were the bad guys!". She has been murdering and doing evil shit for years, it was just against people we did not identify with before.

And the mighty Tywin tops them all. Never had a bad scene where he acted out of character.

Too be fair Tyrion wasn't a bad character by the end he lost the battle of Casterly rock because he has no military experience outside of the black water. He advised Daenerys numerous times to not go north and she did ended up losing a dragon causing it to destroy the wall. He told Daenerys to not burn kings landing and she did, he told her to not burn the tarlys and she did. Every good advice he gave she ignored.

One of the worst characters that was ruined for me was Davos. He was a real highlight of seasons 2-6, and his confrontation with Melisandre was one of the best moments in the show (Liam Cunningham killed that scene). Then in seasons 7 and 8 he just turned into a one-liner machine. Every line he said felt like there needed to be a sitcom laugh track behind it. The worst instance was in the Dragonpit, where everyone was electing Bran and he says 'I don't know if I get a vote, but aye'. It was just such a weird direction to take such a brilliant character and ruined my favourite character to watch.
@hellarrownoe6410 Жыл бұрын
I absolutely agree with this list. As far as I am concerned..... the books, the first four seasons of the show, HOTD,and the score. Are the only worthwhile things. In terms of being a fan of in this fandom.

i actually liked the idea of petyr being killed by sansa, who was way smarter than he thought, and arya, who was way sneakier and more skilled that he thought. being smart and sneaky was basically his whole character, like varys, but unlike varys he was also very self-obsessed and did things only for his own gain, and in the end he was too obsessed and arrogant to notice that these two sisters had caught up to him and eventually beat him at his own game. like i genuinely like that idea and can see what they were trying to do, its just that i was so poorly written and excecuted. it could've been a satisfying ending if it weren't so dumbed down and rushed like everything in those last 13 episodes...
@matt_911210 ай бұрын
Tbf, in the show, Cersei should've actually have him killed in/after that courtyard scene. He was of no immediate use to her/house Lannister and both her and Tyrion knew he was full of it.
