D-Link Wi-Fi Range Extender DAP-1620 | Unboxing and installation

There are so many bad reviews on wifi range extenders that I decided to do a video of my own installation of the D-Link DAP-1620. After working with it for a while, I can now see why these devices get so many negative reviews on the web. In several cases, the easy setup procedure with the WPS button on the router does not work, which means that you have to go through the longer manual procedure. For people who do not know a lot about computers, this manual procedure can be a little scary... but don't give up. I found that the manufacturers' websites are quite good in explaining in details how to do this.

A couple suggestions for anyone late to this video, First if you plan to use WPS to connect this place it close to your router the wps mode does time out so be close..once connected you can move the extender to where needed..it saves the info in case of power outage. With that said WPS has a hack so most new routers either don’t have or it’s disabled. The direct connect method is probably the best and again you can be close during setup then move it...hope this helps

How far is the extender from the router? How many walls has the signal had to go through to reach the extender? Brick wall? Thanks.

The extender is 20 feet away and there is one drywall in between. I am getting the full 3 leds for signal strength. Thanks for watching!

Is this device a wireless network extender only or can I use it to extend my wired network as well (considering it has a gigabit ethernet port).

I could be wrong but I don't think you can do that. If you do so, the extender will not work because it is designed to use only a Wi-Fi connection to a Wi-Fi router. But of course you can connect a PC with an ethernet cable right at the extender. Perhaps somebody else will add some info. Thanks for watching!

Yes, have access point mode to extend with cat5 cable.

Hi Superdan Tech, I have the same one, and tried all kinds of things to make it work ( I,m a graduate computer tech support) and got tired of it, Almost threw it out! until maybe 3 months after I just plugged it in the wall and it works!! nothing else I did, yes just hooked it up and bang it works???

I honestly don't know. I have not seen it in the specs. Mine is 20 feet away from my router and it works perfectly to feed the bedroom upstairs. Thanks for watching!

the higher frequency of 5 G does NOT pass through objects as well as the 2.4 ghz . lower RF frequency's will pass through more obstacles(walls) , its the same for sound you can typically hear the bass beat of music from quite a distance but the mid and high stuff you won't hear unless you are verry close.

Mine keeps overheating or something. Works great for awhile but then starts acting up and need to unplug it for awhile.

Mine never over heated but it does operate quite warm. You might have a defective unit.

Range of 5G will always be less than 2.4. Nothing weird there

I come from the nuclear industry where higher frequencies radiation have more penetration and range. This is why I find strange that 5 gh has less range than 2.4!

@@SuperdanTech 5G wifi band has bigger bandwidth and hence lesser range as compared to 2.4G which has smaller bandwidth and longer range. I guess this could be due to the fact that u cannot increase the power of the wifi transmitter beyond a certain level as specified by FCC for safe use at home. Hence the compromise
