Adam21 It's time to let go off of The Legend of Dragoon and Level-5. Why? I will tell you now since I know pretty much what's going on at Japan Studio nowadays. I will first give you a backstory. In 1996 Sony hired young designers from different companies like Sega, Squaresoft, unproven programmers and designers from universities. Yoshida was the executive producer and he created three teams. One of the teams started with a big project from scratch that was LoD. Team ICO started out small but it developed into a big game on PS2. Ape Escape was a fun small game. The Legend of Dragoon was the most expensive project by Sony along with MediEvil, it ended up to cost 16M dollars without marketing. When critics slammed it to the ground Sony just wanted to pretend the game didn't exist even though it sold one million copies in the US. Major changes at Japan Studio when GT team moved out and moved into a own studio, Polyphony Digital, in late 1998. Toyama and some other people left Konami to join Japan Studio. A new small team working on a new survival horror for PS2. Team ICO become the new AAA team after The Legend of Dragoon. Sony didn't needed a big JRPG by themselves when they had third parties on their side. Level-5 was the solution to save costs. They did some big JRPGs but they weren't as ambitious as Squaresoft or Team ICO's action/adventure games. Level-5 was Sony's only collaboration that survived into PS3 and Media Vision was shunned. Game Republic got a opportunity who made Folklore but it flopped. White Knight Chronicles bombed even harder. Since Level-5 got so many chances in the PS2 era the partnership ended there after WKC. Level-5 made their first third party game for PS3, Ni no Kuni, that sold more than Sony's collaboration projects in the past. Now we see Ni no Kuni II for PS4/Steam. Team ICO was dissolved in 2012 when the producer exposed Sony when he left Japan Studio. Japan Studio needed a new AAA team that will represent their global reputation. Team ICO fucked it up and took way too long to produce a game. It was unacceptable for Allan Becker who was the new studio director. Max 5 years it should take in development for a big project. Sony had also learned their lesson with Demon's Souls since it sold so well in Japan and in the West. From Software was also hot with Dark Souls series. Miyazaki was a big name on the map for Westerners and Japanese fans. Level-5 didn't have this reputation at all. So Sony got in touch with From Software and Miyazaki to work with them on a game for PS4. It was when Project Beast started to leak out in 2013. Bloodborne was a big success and has sold 2.61M so far. But the contract that started with three games extended after Bloodborne's success. Don't expect Media Vision or Level-5 to come back any soon. genDesign is literally replacing Media Vision since Yoshida wants to collaborate with Fumito Ueda's games that have a big impact on gamers across the world. The Last Guardian has sold 1M so far and it's still going strong. From Software is replacing Level-5. Japan Studio has small teams like Toyama's team and Knack team. But Japan Studio does also have a new AAA team and Yoshida is really excited about their project. We might see it now at E3 along with Sucker Punch's new IP. I don't blame Sony for this move. They had to restructure the studio it was in pretty bad shape in the PS3 era. Nothing got out and nothing sold.

Played an hour. Loved the characters, got bored by the dungeons. A day later I realized I was still thinking about it and played a couple hours more. Still unsure. I tried it again today and pumped 3.5 hours into it and now I'm hooked. It's so much fun taking pictures and inventing and exploring and grinding for materials. What a wonderful game to play after finishing Kingdom Hearts III and loving it enough to platinum it. Great review.

This looks really good. I love use of cell shading in the ps2 generation, it really makes games pop and look wonderful compared to their 'realistic' counterparts. I feel like way too many ps2 games were afraid to use cartoony or bright colorful graphics, making much of the system's catalog look like it has a grey film over everything.

This must be my tenth time watching this review. Dark Cloud 2 is my all time favourite game. I've been hoping for Dark Cloud 3 to be announced for over 15 years. Every year I have lost that belief a little more, the PS5 unveiling was the last opportunity. Sadly, I don't believe the game ever had enough of a fanbase to warrant a third installment. It went criminally under the radar and deserved far more attention. Atleast those of us who were lucky enough to play it know JUST how good it was. I will always have the best memories from this game.

How did I find this game? Long process, and I probably won't recall some of the details correctly. If Dark Cloud hadn't been on someone else's demo disk, and if Dark Chronicle hadn't been on display at a seemingly high price, 2nd-hand, for a long time at EB Games, I might never have played this game. First saw Dark Chronicle at EB Games, pre-owned, priced at about 5/6 the price of a new-release game, which seemed rather high. I remember seeing it there quite a few times. Some time before, I went to someone's house with my parents. They had a PS2, and the kids there liked playing the demo of Dark Cloud from a demo disc. They also had Jak and Daxter, which convinced me to get a PS2. A long time later, I re-read the back of the box of Dark Chronicle at EB Games, and noticed it included a 'Georama' system, which I'd heard of from the Dark Cloud demo, which allowed me to find out that this was a 'sequel' to Dark Cloud. Sometime before (or maybe after) that, I found a copy of Dark Cloud (can't remember if it was 2nd-hand or new), and played through it. Then I went to several stores, asking them if they had 'Dark Chronicle' several times before finally finding it and buying it. Pretty sure I rented both games first too.

You are AWESOME! I love your review of Dark Cloud 2. It's one of my absolute favorites and I still have my disc copy of it. No way am I giving it up! I made the mistake of doing that with Haunting Ground & Rule of Rose years ago and now their prices on amazon are through the roof. Sadly the developers & publishers of those games have no intention (I heard they literally can't) of re-releasing those games for new fans now that those games have cult followings. Which is also why prices are so high for them. I learned a lesson in gaming though: never give up your games! Just for your review of Dark Cloud 2 I'm subscribing and hitting the like button :)

One of my most favorite games of all time. Everything about it was amazing.

Seeing something like a game review from 2013 and seeing how less formulaic it is compared to modern game reviews is a breath of fresh air.

I haven't reviewed it yet, mostly because I want to hold off until I find something worth saying that hasn't been said a million times before. :)

Back when people read Kotaku and it wasn't all about politics, Stephen Totilo wrote an article: "Level 5: More People Need To Ask For A Dark Cloud Sequel." A bunch of people then emailed Totilo directly to make Dark Cloud 3, back when people used email more. "Here's a typical e-mail: 'Can you please make a Dark Cloud 3? I have very good memories of that game and its sequel. Many other fans and I would love it if you'd make one. I would preferably ask you to make it for Xbox 360 as well, since I only have a 360 and not a PS3. Thank you.' Another e-mail was even more emphatic. I will quote it in full. Subject line: 'Dark Cloud 3.' Body text: 'Make it.'"

On my thirteenth birthday I got SmackDown SYM, Kingdom Hearts, and Dark Cloud 2. The greatest birthday ever. All 10/10 games. Of course I lost interest in this game compared to other 2 cause it's a slow burn but playing it again 5 years later I never imagined it would be that great.

I never owned SmackDown SYM but wrestling games were ALWAYS great and fun to play but I did own KH and DC2 hence the D&K in my name. The slow burn of this game is with most RPG's but when you're involved in this game... You're FULLY involved

You were right about the physical copies of this game. Checking on amazon (I'm more of an eBay person for games though) it's up to around $90 bucks..Around $30ish on eBay.

This game is my second favorite video game, but it has by far the best soundtrack of any video game I've ever played.

Hey Super Derek, if you look up dark cloud 3 there's a lot of info saying that dark cloud 3 will be released exclusively on PS4. More info is to come on next years E3, and I'm pretty excited. Also I feel I should mention I just got dark cloud 2 and looked up some info on the game, leading me to you. I hope my info helps

Thanks for the heads-up! I've been hearing murmurs on the wind about a sequel, and I can't express just how excited I am to hear that this may actually be coming true! Have fun with DC2, it really is one heck of a game! :)

Super Derek I really hope that if they release a third they also will rerelease the first two. I never actually beat either of the others, and I would love to have a chance to really play them right now that I am an adult.

Subbed. I loved darkcloud as a child and when I read about Dc2 in gamepro my eyes popped out at the cell shaded goodness. But I hadn't ever played the game. Off to ebay.

I want to play this game so much. My parents didn't let me buy it back then because of the monster at the back of the box :/. To this day I have always wanted to play it. I will get it when I get my ps4. Really need to play this.
