The original Gundam is hilarious when you think about it. From Zeon’s perspective White Base is a goddamn ghost ship that appears deep behind their lines to kill everyone in their vicinity. It’s coming heralds the arrival of the White Devil, a mobile suit so powerful almost nobody has managed to face it and live. And meanwhile on White Base it’s just a bunch of panicked civilians and maybe 3 actual military personnel screaming in constant terror because they keep getting lost in Zeon territory

Seriously though, I first watched it in Japanese and it’s a heck of a lot better in Japanese. Also the budget wasn’t terrible for 1979. They actually seem to put more effort into the eye animation than a lot of 90s anime with a higher budget. I think what mostly throws this off is the English dub. English dub’s at the time were horrible, just look up Captain Harlock English dub. It’s almost disturbing that they allowed these things to be published lol

it was absolutely low-budget even according to the people who worked on it. yasuhiko said on space battleship yamato their colour chart was about 300 colours, on gundam they had to fight for 82. whenever yasuhiko or itano animates a cut it’s beautiful, but yas was hospitalised from ep25 onwards lol. tho i do agree that the japanese is much better (much as i love the dub) i feel like the dub script strongly downplays a lot of the more bleak moments.

Whenever I read Char's lines in a Gundam manga or subtitled video games, Kopsa's voice is the one that I hear. While the other actors who voiced Char are okay, none of them [aside from Shuichi Ikeda who voiced him in the original Japanese version] can hold a candle to Kopsa. He [Kopsa] WAS Char to me. 2022 can go fuck itself for taking him from us.

Dude really captured Char in the dub really well, he captures his calous and backstabby nature but also adds a layer of Sympathy to the performance, as if he is trying to copy Human Empathy but can't really completely Empathise with people at all. Side note but Not a Psychologist but Char likely has Antisocial Personality Disorder and PTSD as he fits both Disorders really well, which means despite the Script failing it at times Michael did his job well.

I think it’s the dub that kinda screws it up. English dubbing the 70s and 80s was just a nightmare. This is why everyone to this day makes jokes about old martial arts films, because the dubs would be just like this. Look up Captain Harlock, it’s one of the most hilarious English anime dubs. I originally watch Gundam in Japanese, and the tone felt completely different in Japanese then these very awkward, lopsided attempts that voice acting lol. I actually felt very touched by this anime, I force myself to watch it because at first I was afraid it’s gonna be cheesy because most of the anime I’ve been exposed to from that era was corny, but lo and behold, I was presented with a series that confronted still ever present problematic social norms, such as Asanda Ming, divisiveness, prejudice, war, bureaucracy, etc. I kind of felt like as especially Gundam anime was adapted and adapted and adapted overtime, they got turned into more and more trying to please horny 13 year-old rather than tell a good story .
