When Toriyama died, I decided it was time to read Dragon Ball. I thought the 16 volumes of the original series and it was wonderful. My dad loves Dragon Ball, Akira Toriyama’s death was incredibly impactful, one of my earliest memories is me and my dad watching the cell arc of Dragon Ball. Rest in peace Akira Toriyama, a man who shaped my life in a way few others did.

This was supposed to be a short, simple manga about an old man and a tank which I made for my own personal enjoyment. But the tank was harder to draw than I expected, and I stubbomly insisted on drawing it all myself, so I came to regret ever getting involved with it. But the story was already plotted out to the end, so I couldn't change anything, and I went through hell drawing the whole thing. -Akira Toriyama, 2000

My earliest memory of Dragonball is being a young child absolutely terrified of Majin Buu. Watching this happy monster turn some kids into candy and feeding them to another blind child. Seeing Dabura, who was scary himself, turned into a cookie and completely done away with. The fear and curiosity those moments left me with are what compelled all of my interest in anime and visual art as a whole; Nothing else will ever in my mind compare to the master piece that Toriyama created.

I randomly stumbled upon Dragon Half back over a decade ago. It doesn't live rent free in my head, it does pay rent in the one bedroom brain apartment it rents reliably. It's just there. All the time. Every once in a while it goes "You are now thinking about the anime dragon girl from the 90s that wore the super skimpy outfit. You are welcome." And then I once again suspect that it was one of the initial seeds that got me into monster girls.

I was I wanna say around 11 years old. My mom and younger sister were in the living room talking which gave me the opportunity to choose what was on the tv. I changed the channel to nicktoons and happened to catch the episode of DragonBall Z Kai where Vegeta charged the final flash. I sat there enthralled and from then on American cartoons never grabbed me the same again. I spent the rest of middle school obsessed with Dragonball. I got my friend Robbie into the series recently in my mid-early 20's and rediscovering that joy from a series I hadn't rewatched for several years was amazing. Dragonball inspired in me a love of martial arts, anime, and manga. When I heard the news of his passing, I cried in my basement for 5 minutes straight. Thank you Akira Toriyama.

Toriyama's work has had such a profound effect on my life, his work has just been such a constant force throughout it. I loved DBZ as a child and his character and monster designs in Dragon Quest are some of my favourite of all time, I think Slimes might actually be a perfect design they're just so wonderful. The Sand Land manga which is so charming and deeply underrated quickly became a favourite of mine when I read it back in January and now I have a little Beelzebub key chain on my purse as my own little memorial to Toriyama. Thank you Toriyama for everything, I hope you can rest in peace. Thank you too Wolf for creating a space for us to share our feelings, memories and remember such a genuine icon.

My favorite Dragon Ball memory was going to see Super Broly in theaters with one of my best friends in 2018. This was one of my first times seeing an anime movie in a theater, and it was wall to wall with DBZ fans. It really caught me off guard. The movie itself was a masterpiece. Everything i love about dragon ball on full display. Just couldn’t believe the level of animation i was witnessing. It was like how i always imagined DBZ fights in my head finally came to life. My favorite moment though came the first time that Goku used the Kamehameha in the movie. As he started to charge up, everyone in the theater chanted alongside him. I couldn’t believe it. It felt like the room shook as everyone seated shouted KAMEHAMEHA! I think about that moment all the time when i think how much dragonball means to me. Thank you Akira Toriyama for everything. ❤

My dad was a complex guy. He worked as a machinist, he liked doing Auto maintenance on the weekends, he was an army combat, veteran, real classical, masculine I a lot of ways. But he liked books and art too. Stephen King, the expanded universe Star Wars novels, he had his box of sketchbooks he filled up with drawings of superheroes, copied from those “draw like superhero comics “books. He was the kind of guy who taken an interest in anything his kid was into, so he could understand it, and answer questions and share it with me. I appreciated it, even then, but I could always tell when it was an effort for him. Which is why it was so cool to watch Dragon Ball, Z with him; because he didn’t have to try to put up with my he really enjoyed it. We were watching the world tournament as it was airing, and there’s this fight with Goku and a character named Pikkon, where in they do a test of strength and smash their heads together trying to get leverage over the other. I thought that was so cool, and me and my dad would copy it. We’d clasp hands and put ourl foreheads together, and I could push as hard as I could, and he did push just hard enough to put up some resistance without knocking me back. That became a way to show affection between us. When I was excited, we’d do a test of strength just like in the show. Toriyama and his art gave that to me and my dad, who passed away when I was 13. I still don’t quite know how it all works, but I think they get along if they ever met, now that they’re in the same place. They could talk about art, and what makes a man strong.

My father was never into the nerd stuff I was into. He would get me to the Movie Theater and help me transform my Optimus Prime for the first time, but he never engaged with anything I like. He is an example of a Dad - with a capital D - but that was simply not his cup of tea. But I remember eaiting lunch with him before kindergarden back in ~2009, he would get off work, come home, cook for me and feed me while watching TV and the Buu Saga was playing - endless loops of it. I was never big into Dragon Ball growing up, it was just a cool cartoon to me. But it was the first time he was invested in a cartoon! He cared for Buu and Mr. Satan - he is an animal-lover, you see - and I cared because of that. Those 20 minutes watching a Dragon Ball arc on loops connected me to my father in a way my favorite heroes and stories didn't. After that, one day he came home with a DVD Box-set. He said Dragon Ball was japanese and that there was a japanese show he watched when he was my age. That was the first time I remember that happening. It was the first Ultraman show. I ATE that show up. I'm a huge fan of it to this day. I was not only watching my hero fight to protect Earth, I was watching my FATHER's hero - it meant a lot to me. Then when I was older, roughly 6 months before COVID happened, I talked to him, remembering those days, and to my shock, he remembered Mr. Satan's name, arc and personality and said he was his favorite character. I saw an Amazong listing of a Dragon Ball manga box-set, all 42 volumes of it. I was very much an anime/manga guy, but never experienced Dragon Ball since my childhood. My parents bought the Manga for me for my Birthday and I couldn't stop reading. I can't point my finger as to why, but Dragon Ball locked me in like no other story had since One Piece. When COVID and Quarentine happened, I was 2 Volumes away from completing the Buu Saga. I remember being scared and my family in panic as we sat in the kitchen watching the news. I got the Genki-Dama chapter. I can't explain the sweel of emotion I felt. All the fear I was feeling faded away as I saw how humanity together is stronger than any adversary, how we can overcome the highest of walls if we simply do our part to help each other. As tears flowed down, I saw the beauty of a community and of every person that is a part of it. I'm sure Toriyama never expected a Quarentine to blow up and never expected that chapter to inspire a nerdy dude to do his part in social-distancing and to continue his path to be a Pharmacist because of his dreams of helping out, but he did - I was already on that career path, but he sure was a part of inspiring me further. As you said, he impacted me so much and I'm not even a spec of dust among the amount of other lives he changed. Thank you, Akira Toriyama, you'll be missed. Rest In Peace.

I was around 10 years old, and seeing how it blended so many genres and tones while also being animated and being the global phenomenon that it became influencing kids and adults alike, it became a standard for me. As a creator, I chased Toriyama without knowing what the hell I was doing, but I knew I wanted to capture what I felt while watching Dragonball. Since then ive read the manga, and saw his other works outside dragonball and even though I wish he got a chance to expand on some of his other ideas, I'm grateful for what we got a chance to experience. I'm also thankful for how much he added to my approach to storytelling. Rest in Power.

Terminator Zero was my personal favorite piece of media from this year. Was a great way to re-approach a popular ip that has been dead in the water for like 20 years.

I'm a younger brother, so naturally I always identified with the younger characters or siblings in shows. So as with many, Gohan was *my* character. He was the one I always cheered for. I could almost recite his episodes with Piccolo training him and his parallels to his father as a kid when you compare them between panels. The Cell Saga was a big peak for me of course but honestly, who Gohan became and has currently ended up as were so big for me. My brother was the sports guy, he was an all star at every sport in school and I thought he was just the coolest. But I never was. I wanted to learn like Gohan did and study and do that for my life. So seeing Gohan succeed and become a smart guy with a normal family was so fulfilling for me. And of course with the current state of DBS, Gohan finally achieving his new form and being able to rival his father on equal, if not higher ground according to the manga, really inspires me even today. There's something about how Toriyama really loved the exuberant energy of youth and how much he loved those panels. Yes Gohan gets brutalized and early DB was not short on kinda horrifying stuff happening to Goku, there's such a strong happiness to it all. I still have the single volume of DB I bought as a kid. It's in good condition because I always held it in such reverence. I hope he knew we all loved his work and how many of us he inspired. Good bye toriyama

Wolf plays Tekken!? I just looked over at the second channel and you've been playing for months, what!?!? Finding out that one of my favorite content creators plays one of the best fighting game franchises, and a franchise that I keep very close to my heart, has made my day.

Dragon Ball was the only anime I ever watched with my Grandma. She didn't judge it, she just sat and watched this cool show with me that I could only watch when I stayed up late at their place. It is a powerful memory inside me that I meld into a lot of empathetic situations, give someone else's passion a genuine shot. Sure you may not like it but that genuine empathy of trying to understand what they enjoyed will be conveyed to that person. And they will appreciate it with their soul

Man, Toriyama's work with DB filled a big place in my heart. I remember being a kid and trying to punch as fast as I was seeing the characters in DBZ and trying to work on my reflexes so if I ever got in a fight, I could recreate the Frieza v. Vegeta fight where I'm just dodging all the attacks and feeling like I was tough shit. I've played a lot of DB games as a result. While I know we'll never see another one or it leaves the DS Prison, DB Fusions was a great little RPG with an amusing concept of letting me fuse DB characters together not to even mention the fact that Toriyama did the designs for Dragon Quest which became a very influential RPG for me as well. Bless Toriyama for all he did while he was here and I love seeing the works of people inspired by him.

Toriyama's character designs in Chrono Trigger are still some of my favorite to this day. The level of expression and personality that John described with his Dragon Ball character design, but translated to videogame character. Toriyama did such a great job fully taking advantage of the fact each character came from different times. And they were all designed so that even when they were translated down to just pixels they were still incredibly expressive. The man truly left a positive mark on the world.

You want to know how I knew how the impact of Toriyama's death was huge? When they announced his passing publically, I was in a movie theater and I didn't know until I finished driving home. My mother, who does not read manga or watch anime, knew and took note of his passing in the time it took me to do that. A legend that transcends his medium, his loss is felt by many but that's only proof that he did it like no one else. Rest in peace.

Bruh it's wild that the youtubers you mentioned are 2 of my favorites that I only found over the past year or so. Majuular and Grimbeard fucking own. As for my Toriyama story: DBZ changed my life and got me into anime in general. But the work of his i want to mention is the original Sand Land manga. It is so well done and concise

Fun fact, the mangaka for Dragon Half's father and grandfather were both pretty well known Marxist scholars in Japan.

I loved the Freeza saga, but the introduction of Trunks, the mystery of the Androids, the horror elements of Cell... that era of Dragonball Z shaped me so profoundly as a kid, culminating in Gohan's Anger. The design of Trunks especially is timeless, and I wouldn't have had long hair and trained for so much of my life had I not had that early inspiration as a kid. Dragon Ball got me into martial arts, but it also got me into taking care of my body, seeing it as a work in progress, and something to be proud of at each and every stage of that journey. Also. Dragon Ball Volume 1 is the reason I got into Manga. I picked up a Three in one for the original Dragon Ball volume after Toriyama passed, and reading through it has been a joy.
