In this video, I take you through the basics of saponification to help you understand the process for cold process soap. I discuss what SAP values are and how you can find them. I also explain what superfat is including the advantages and disadvantages of superfatting and lastly talk about lye heavy soap, what causes it and how to recognise it.

As a newish soaper I completely agree! Very lucky to have so many resources. After watching several saoping youtube videos my first batch turned out really good. Hi Lisa, this was very informative, thank you. I would like to see you do a video explaining how I can make my own recipe, I've tried by kinda using others recipes, but, not sure how different oils will do. I like a hard bar, but not to hard, like the way beef tallow makes good Hard bars. I like 6% superfat at least, but 7 is nice too, im 59, so my skin feels dry after showering with less than 6%. I am making a 50/50 cold process soap where I have infused, for two months) the olive oil with lemon rind and bay leaves (strained off later) and then added the coconut oil and brought them up to 80 degrees to enhance the oil scent from the rind, its has a faint and delicate scent but has all the lovely colour of the lemon rinds too. Hope you approve!!

Sounds great, just be careful if using anything fresh in an infusion, it can mould and cause problems.

Thank you so much, ooh solid sodium lactate, I've never seen it but it makes sense as it is just a type of salt, the solutions we buy are typically a 60% concentrate, so I would image all that's happened it it's been dispersed before we buy it.

One question I have and have been unable to find answers for involve additives. Can you tell me of any source that might let me know how much of an additive I can use? For example Kaolin clay.. how much is too much in a batch? Same with other clays, botanicals, silk, ect.

I love how you explain things so throughly. Thank you! My question is about making a noncomedogenic soap. Coconut oil and olive oil can clog pores but if there is zero super fat and all the oil was saponified would it still have ability to clog pores?? Wondering if I could go lye heavy with those oils and blend it then add other non-comedogenic oils like sunflower and jojoba afterward and blend them in? Any expert thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Ooh, gosh that is outside my experience I'm afraid, so would hate to give advice that I wasn't certain of. One thing I can advise on it the action of saponification and oils. With cold process you cannot chose which oils saponify and which are left as superfat, the lye will take what ever it wants during the saponification process which takes up to 3 days, so any oil you add before the end of that process can be consumed by the lye. If you want to choose a superfat oil you would need to hot process your soap, so make the soap and cook it, get it saponified, then after that, before you add to the mould you can add in your superfat oil. Hope that helps a bit

It has so much great information and i learned SO much!! i just unmolded my soap i made yesterday and im seeing white spots all through the color of the soap, i thought WHOA! is that lye?!! but it cut very smoothly and wasn't brittle at all. Just a suggestion bc i personally am so dumb about this but IF possible could you make a video on the differences between the different spots in soap. What is DOS? my spots are white, could it still be bc of the superfat? Im just so confused about it and i don't want it to be a dangerous soap and i want to learn more about it so i can not let it happen again.

HI Kat, if it is generally soft and smooth then it's unlikely to be lye heavy unless you just have lye spots, but those would be very hard and crumbly. DOS would not be in your soap straight away it will develop over a number of weeks/months as the soap cures etc. The white spots are likely to be either titanium dioxide that you haven't dispersed properly (if so I have a video on how to do it) or Stearic spots, these happen when you soap at a cool temperature, the stearic and palmitic acid solidified before the rest of the soap giving white spots throughout the soap. If you used TD and don't know if it's that or stearic spots run your finger over the spots, the TD will smudge, stearic spots won't. I hope that helps

Very interesting video. Your examples helped to make the concepts superfat and lye heavy soap easier to understand. When you spoke of newly completed hot process soap you said that it isn't very good. Would you please qualify that statement? In your opinion, what makes it not good? Have you actually experienced fresh hot process soap? I have found it to be satisfactory soap. It lathered well and was not harsh.

Thanks so much, glad you found it helpful. New hot process soap will be safe to use as it has saponified and depending on your oils it may not be too harsh, so it's OK, but not the best it can be. Hot process still needs to cure just like cold process odes, this will create a longer lasting bar of soap and the mildness and lather will all improve with age, so it should go from satisfactory to 'oooh I really love that' :-)

I made a batch with my normal recipe and didn’t add a super fat because I was not knowledgeable that it’s best to include one, but Made sure that my cleansing value was lower so it would not be so drying. I have a quick question for you Madam. Can I use regular blender in soap making (SAponification) instead of stick blender? It is because we do not have a tool like that. Curing is about more than just evaporation. 🤠 A good soap recipe will not only get harder, but typically the lather and feel of the soap improve with a little age.

Hi Robyn, there is a difference between a safe soap and a good soap, safe is just after saponification but the bar will not be it's best, will not last very long because of all the water and also will not be as mild and bubbly as it can be, like good wine, good soap improves with age

There is no overall sap value of soap, each oil has a different sap value, so it will depend on what oils you use in your recipe

Thank you! So if I have a lye heavy soap and it's no good, how do I get rid of it? If I use it in laundry, will it ruin my clothes? Or maybe it'll clean my washing machine! 🤔

If you use it in your washing machine (grated down) it won't ruin your clothes, lye is water soluble, so will flush down the drain. Remember it's also what is used for drain cleaner, so you it will probably give your machine a bit of a clean, maybe not too much because unless you really mucked up your calculations there shouldn't be loads of excess lye. I've never use lye heavy soap in a washing machine (I've never actually had a lye heavy soap apart from the little on I deliberately made in this video) I would want to make sure my washing machine did a couple of good rinse cycles

I have only made melt to pour. I have created a cold process recipe myself, I have not made it just yet. I’ll be making a loaf on Sunday. I will be using a few different oils. I’m using 43% Rice brain oil and 15% Shea butter 8% Safflower oil high linoleic. Do I still need to use a super fat with these oils? These soaps will be facial bars. I really need some advice!!!

Make sure you run everything through a soap calculator, those oils don't add up to 100% so not sure what other oils you are using. I would always use a superfat and find 5 or 6% works well, unless the missing oil is coconut, then you would want higher

Can you tell me what I did wrong as I am new to soaping. . I used a recipe I have used before . It does have fragrance in it . I poured cupcake soaps . Put in fridge for a few hours so they did not gel. Wanted them to stay milky looking . That evening about 6-7 hours after making them I noticed lye had formed small crystals on top of each cupcake . I cut one open and it was soft and perfect texture I think . The soap lathered up nicely and smells amazing I have rinsed the tops of all of them to see if it surfaces a second time. Are they usable Any idea what I did wrong?? Thank You Katherine

Are you sure it was lye on the top? if so they would be dangerous to use and probably sting you whilst using them. It's more likely that it was soda ash

Thank you so much for rhis video! I made a mistake, and accidentally put 11 g of olis less then it shoul be out of 900 g of total oils. It was supposed to have some superfat, but now there is 0 superfat and less oils than ot should be. Do you think it will be too heavy to use? I've rebatched one part of it and left the other to see what it will look like.

Hi, it will depend on how much superfat you had to start with, if you are sure that it's 0% superfat then it will be OK, but maybe a bit drying. Did you mix any mica etc with oil when you made the soap, if that's the case you would have added a little extra oil anyway. I did some rough calculations (I don't know your recipe, so couldn't be exact) For a 900g oil recipe with 25% each of 4 basic oils the lye used with a 5% superfat would saponify 855g of those oils. So it's likely that if you started with around a 5% superfat that you will still be fine as you would have about 34g of unsaponified oil
