This episode established the trust Alex placed in Kara to always protect her. Alex knew in her soul that Kara would do anything to keep her safe so Alex made it her goal to do the same. Kara needed her heart to be protected and Alex did that. She became her human shield and always made sure Kara's heart was safe and looked out for anything that could break her spirit

@@karamelfan Come to think of it, you're probably right, and based on her age in this scene, as well as her situation later on in her life in the show, she's probably lived on Earth for approximately three years, so she's probably pretty accustomed to how human society works. Course, typically, part and parcel of having a sibling is that you pretty quickly will do almost anything to protect them from fatal harm that you are physically able to avert.
