This whole episode showed her connection and I remember the interview that Mel said, where she commented that Kara was going to be vulnerable with Lena, if the test is to be vulnerable it is probably about that Kara showing completely genuine to Lena

I think Kara's real test is about her has to do with her finding courage as herself, not Supergirl. Think about it, she started off her test as "Kara". she found her courage when she needed to be a hero, which lead to her becoming Supergirl, so maybe her real test isn't to find her courage as Supergirl but as herself? The town could have started off her test at any time, but it was before she even put on the suit.

It's really sweet (and very telling) that Lena's first consideration about using magic isn't to defeat Nyxly, it's to make sure that Kara is safe. The very thought of Kara willingly endangering herself again (especially after they just got Kara back) has consistently been a source of concern for Lena Luthor. I imagine that, had Lena known Kara's secret in earlier seasons, she would have given some worried words about Supergirl fighting an enemy (such as Red Daughter or Queen Rhea) but wished her luck in the end. It makes me think of Catra not wanting Adora to risk her life against the Horde (in "She-Ra"), or of Lois Lane wanting to make sure Superman comes home in one piece.

I think the reason that Kara didn't pass her test was because she went to save Alex when, I think, she shouldn't. That was her test, to see if she has enough strength and corage to live with consequenses of following what the Danvers thought her about hiding who she really is. But that just what I think.

I think for me its obvious why Kara failed. She has always reacted poorly to not having powers and in that moment where a normal person would have been vulnerable, perhaps even exclaim worry for her sister at the possibility that she might die, she was calm. Because she knows she could save her. Nixly was brave in the face of betrayal but Kara essentially took the easiest, non human way out in hers.

The rest of the season is like the end of this episode. Lena and Kara becoming a tight knit unit, while Alex slowly pulls away to pursue her life with Kelly and Esme. The point of this season is to show Lena taking over Alex's role. The episode with Kara and Alex discussing their PTSD was really the last true Alex and Kara scene of their sisterly bond. From this point forward it's Lena with Kara at the end of the episodes, Lena eating potstickers with Kara, Lena is Kara's partner at game night, Lena is the one there when Kara wakes up from being injured, and it's Lena not Alex who kept Kara from going overboard and keeping her humanity (Alex tried and failed, Lena did not fail). They also show Alex observing the interactions and taking note that Lena will protect Kara just as strongly as she did. This should have been a Supercorp season, but I'll except Lena as Kara's biggest protector as well.
