That's not even the worst of the superdickery in that issue. In her first appearance she asked if she'd be moving in with him in Metropolis and he said it would put his secret identity at risk. It's amazing how times have changed. When I was a kid and read those stories, that relationship seemed perfectly reasonable. Probably because I projected a human psyche onto the horse which appeared to be having human thoughts and urges. But being a child at the time, I never thought about what that would mean if it were an actual relationship and the deception involved. I like that take on it. Now all they need is a writer and artist to put it together with your more modern twist.

I find it interesting that the writers of the Silver Age seemed to be enamored with "choke", "gasp", and similar exclamations. Heroes would even think them in their thought balloons. Every intake of breath had to be announced, whether real or imagined. "What happens when Batman becomes... the Bat-SuperMan!" "It's too dangerous for you to fight crime now that you've lost your super-powers, Clark! You'll have to become a civilian! Turn in your costume!!" "Sniff! I-I guess it's for the best! You'll have to take care of Metropolis now that I'm just... an ordinary guy! ...Sob!" "Hello, Lois! Come to see Super-Has-Been off?" "You bet! It's splitsville for us, Superman! Now that you've lost your super-powers, Batman's the super-stud for me! Chuckle!" "Gasp! But Lois!" "And I want to be Batman's pal now, Super--I mean, Regular Man! Look! I'm destroying my Super-Signal Watch and putting on the Bat-Super-Signal Watch, now!" "Gulp! But Jimmy!" "There's no place for you in the future anymore, Sup-- uh, you! We hereby ban you from the Legion of Super-Heroes! Chortle!!" "But Legion of Super-Heroes! Choke! Groan! Sigh! Huff! Hrok!!" Etcetera.

the "oh Bill, if only you ~knew~ the terrible truth about me" and Comet doing that also reminds me of why I initially couldn't get into comics (in the sense of reading a series right from issue 1) because oh my God there had to be a million variations of those same lines every other issue in things like Amazing Spider-Man. I understand why they were written like that but I did not (probably still don't) have the patience for that crap. I actually recall just skipping entire pages of the first 100 issues of ASM because every time I would read some variation of "oh no, I can't tell them I'm Spider-Man" I would just roll my eyes and be like "for fucks sake Peter quit, shit or get off the pot". I actually appreciate that in modern adaptations a lot of that is just dropped, such as Peter just going for it and outing himself to Gwen in ASM1, or Lois being in the presence of Clark discovering that he is Kryptonian and subsequently doing her journalist thing and figuring out he is Clark Kent

One story I remember from long ago, (reading comics since '60's, and I've been unable to confirm since, (but I'm so sure... and I know memories can lie,) is a year before Bruce Banner became "The Hulk" there was a Jimmy Olsen story where he became a Purple "Hulk", that looked a lot like what Banner would become. Anyone else remember, confirm? But that was indeed a great (and in hindsight disturbing sometimes,) time for weird Jimmy Olsen / Lois Lane, and Supergirl stories. I miss the days when it was Bank Robbers, and Simple Villains trying to out-think the Man of Steel. As always, for all your efforts, your observations and wisdom, your presentation, and the video that results, thank you so very much.

Ah, the Comics Code era. Protecting the vulnerable from morally ambiguous stories. But how are they going to keep them in Paris once they see what goes down on the farm? :) Also, I imagine some of Lex Luthor's anger comes from always getting his clothing stolen.

His backstory is like "Knives Out" crossed with "Sorry To Bother You".

I'm very uncomfortable with how comfortable these writers were with exploring pseudo-Beastiality. It's not that he's a horse it's that she didn't know he was a horse. Also the stalking.

The more I learn about Comet, the more creepy it seems. The Legion of Super-Pets will never be the same for me.

Thank you for using the Mr. Ed voice for Comet while narrating this Silver age madness. Also this video title is more honest than Comet was the entire story.

Brilliant. I love it when you talk about these bizarre Silver Age stories - they're fun! Most new comics are depressing, but these cheer me up.
