Dead Space is great because it's written by people who've read (about) a lot of horror and science fiction and wanted to try their hand at it, but are handicapped by having a room-temperature IQ. It's like one of those procedurally-generated stories; the writers are trying to emulate stuff they like without even the slightest understanding of _why_ those stories work and theirs is just an inert, formulaic turd. I remember reading an interview with one of the guys who made this game, and he was saying things like "I don't like it in horror when it creates feelings of weakness and helplessness, so in _Dead Space_ I wanted to make the player feel scared but also powerful and totally dominating the monsters!" Just lovably stupid in the way that, like, an energetic dog is. The later games do get a little more creative with the aliens all smushing together to eventually form into like planets, and the cult who preserve their bodies so they can get assimilated.
