One after another become my favorite Lautner house! This house is such a synthesis of Lautner genius (roof beams and glass) with strong Wright influence (stone as idealized in Falling Water). This refined restoration compliments Lautner's vision. I love this house!!!

I know what you mean: each time I think I have found my favorite design by Lautner, but then I discover a new house by him that is even more interesting. Each of his houses is brilliant in it's own way. This house belongs to my top 5 favorites by Lautner because it ( as you mentioned it) combines all the trademarks of Lautner in one house and also shows the influence by FLW. The Wolff House is comparable with this home, check also that video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/o4nciX95nLecn9U

This house is so cool and beautiful. You are right that John Lautner never built the same house twice. I wondered how the castle structure would work out, whether it would seem simply cold and massive inside, but it is actually warm and comfortable looking. And the views are spectacular, and maximized by the ingenious design.

This house is a truly a John Lautner 's castle! I think many rock and flagstones can be sometimes cold from inside, but because it's built in southern California the cooling is very welcome!

This is a marvelous house. The anchoring stone towers, placed at regular intervals and on a curve, give it a grounded temple-like monumentality that must be one of Lautner's greatest inventions. All his more signature forms play off of these. The renovation is both sensitive and very stylish. The new space below the pool is a nice touch. How can we see these sequestered marvels so hidden in exclusive cul-de-sacs? In the mind's eye and thanks to these videos...
@SuperJobbel
@SuperJobbel Жыл бұрын
It's indeed sad that these brilliant designed homes are not open for public. They are mostly hidden in cul du sacs and in gated communities. They deserve more attention and therefore I like to make these videos: to show people a look inside and show the qualities. This house remains one of my favorite John Lautner designs: a castle like house high in the hills.

Incredibly brilliant design on a most challenging site. I think Mr. Lautner outdid his mentor. Brilliant use of light and shadow! Don't care for built in furniture (a la FLW). Wonderful house to live in I suspect. Thanks for the great video.

Yes I also love this house. In some ways Lautner indeed outdid his mentor FLW, but still I think FLW is the greatest architect of all time. Nice to read that you liked the video.

I was thinking “why block the view with those large rock turrets?” until the mention of the medieval collections of the family. Then it clicked. I really like the entrance, the location of the planters, the lower roof section, all the glass and even the columns. Very FLW without being obvious. Other nods to the master are clear.

Some wonderful design elements but there are so much dead space. I guess castles had a lot of dead space too. Anyway, it's a very interesting building.
@SuperJobbel
@SuperJobbel 11 ай бұрын
Castles have indeed a lot of dead space because they had to inhabited a lot of people. (up to 30/50 people lived in a castle) This house was orginally designed for a large family. I you live here you can create a lot of entertainment for yourself: your own billiart room, your own gym, cinema and art studio. A lot of people can fill in the dead space, unfortunately only a few can pay for it: so it's an absolute luxury mansion.

This house is brilliant. I can definitely see a FLW influence. Stunning. There were two different photo’s of the bathtub in the master suite and I wondered which you think would have been the original? There was an oval one and one that seemed to have what looked like chair backs on each end.
@SuperJobbel
@SuperJobbel 10 ай бұрын

@@SuperJobbel What a total shame! The oval one seems so generic and boring. Very UN-Lautner. I definitely prefer the original. 😊
@SuperJobbel

Yes, that's the problem with many old archicture masterpieces: practicality is chosen over design quality. I guess the new jacuzi is more practical but but indeed less Lautner. @@thepolitewierdo

This is the problem with many European home owners who claim their house is inspired by Wright / Lautner and such: you need a spectacular natural landscape for the house designs to pop. And getting a permit for such a house is also quite difficult in many EU countries.
@SuperJobbel

''Villa Henny'' is in the Netherland's a very good example of a FLW inspired home, but it's true there are only a few FLW look a likes in Europe. Indeed due to the reasons you mention. But I think European architecture has its own charm, FLW is very American, Europe shouldn't imitate America and vice versa. Europa has a beutifull examples of organic architecture that look very different thant FLW but still are very organic.

I've noticed that a toilet is near the front door and with windows facing the area in front of the entrance , in many of Lautner's homes. And also of many modern Italian houses designed by architects who were inspired by FLW first and by Lautner later. (e.g. Arch. Maurice Betta who operated in the 70-80s) Personally, I wouldn't want a detail of this type for my home.
@SuperJobbel
@SuperJobbel Жыл бұрын
Okay, interesting, That's a detail that I didn't notice. But now you say it, indeed some FLW and Lautner have toilets next to the frontdoor, I don't know why did they do that.

Every home and business should install a rain water collection and storage system along with solar panels. Even in areas where rain is infrequent it is crazy to waste the little rain that does fall and waste it. We need to stop planting green lawns and switch to local native plantings around homes. It is crazy to plant lawns and build golf courses in dry desert areas. We waste too much water and electricity. the future is electric. Wind and solar energy along with electric vehicles are the future. Stop using fossil fuels. There is a climate crisis.
