A great video again! It wasn't until seeing this video that I noticed the similarity between John Lautner's designs and Ken Adam's set designs in James Bond franchise.

Thank you, I wanted to include a story about Ken Adam and his similarities with Lautner in this video: however then the video would become to long, so I cut it out in the editing and will make a separate video of it sometime. I like Ken Adam designs and there are indeed many similaties between Lautner and Adam, like the Vulcano lair in ''You Only Live Twice'' and Bob Hope's house. Still I don't know if Adam and Lautner ever met or if they were inspired by each other...I couldn't find any information about it......

Great video. Over the years I've really enjoyed watching some of the best homes by the famous architects integrated into famous movies. For many of us it's the only way to see the Interiors of Lautner's houses actually being use for dramatic effects.

Great to read that you liked the video and funny that you didn't knew the house from ''Less then Zero'' was actually the Silvertop house. Almost all houses by Lautner have cinematic qualities.

Hello, maybe you have received the information already. The Arango House has been used as a setting in a movie. It served Johnny Depp and Franca Potente as a home in the film "Blow" dealing with the life of a drug traficker. Also, in a way, Chemosphere was reproduced in the cartoon series "The Jetsons".

Oh really!! Are you sure that the Arango House was used in the movie Blow? I know that it was filmed partly in Acapulco but I haven't seen the house in it (I've seen the movie a very long time ago)..... If so: I guess the house was only used limited in the background or something.... About the Jetsons: I know that there house was inspired by the Chemosphere, but it was to far-fetched in my opinion.. The Chemosphere loosely inspired multiple other TV-shows like the Flying Saucer spaceship from ''Lost in Space'' or ''The Round House'' on Tracy island in the Thunderbirds. But all those reference were to far-fetched.

You can clearly tell that the makers of those movies were also in love with Lautner's houses and strove to present them in the best ways possible.

haha! I shall do my best in researching everything.......All for the sake of architectural history :) Indeed those filmmakers must had a true passion for John Lautner and architecture because they are filmed in a beautiful dramatic way. .

It's possible that "James Bond" might have more to do with my interest in architecture than I had realized: When I watched "Dr. No" way back in the 60's, the movie itself seemed normal as movies go, but all of a sudden due to one scene the atmosphere of the movie changed to something far more dynamic, intriguing and mysterious. That moment is when we see the room that Professor Dent enters and is part of Dr. No's lair. My response was " whoa, what the heck we have here??" Architecture showing us a design that intrigues; what's that large hole in the ceiling for? What is that large grate covering it for? Why is the ceiling slanted? Why is it so empty? Where's the bad guy, exactly? Why is this place like this? Theres no windows. No doorknob. Questions arise that were not created by the movie itself up to this point. Later, we get to see even more of the lair which is fantastic. I loved it. This is probably a large part of why I like Lautner's work so much. He knew how to create wonderful, emotionally fulfilling living spaces that are so rare and can only be appreciated publicly through videos and photos. I noticed that in the last Bond movie, "No Time To Die", there were many set designs reminiscent of these features in previous movies. Maybe in the 'next life' I'll get to meet Mr. Lautner and show my respect.

Many sets in the James Bond films were designed by Ken Adam, a person who wanted to be an architect but who then became a set designer. There are strong similarities between the works by Ken Adam and John Lautner. At first I wanted to include about Ken Adam in this video, but I didn't knew how strong the relationship between Adam and Lautner was, I dont know if they even met. So I decided not to include any info about Adam in the video. Maybe I'm gonna make a separate video about Adam's designs someday. All the other James Bond filmsets were inspired by Adam designs in the first movies. Like Lautner they have a dreamlike, futuristic quality. As a child I was also impressed by the strange room with the enormous round skylight in the ceiling: I loved it!

@@SuperJobbel I've got Ken Adam's book The Art of Production Design and it's great. I think he said that at the time they had forgotten about needing a set for this scene and production budget was running low so he sort of threw this design together. But it makes quite an impression.

Yes someday I'm gonna video about other houses in movies, but then i will make one house that was featured in a movie, I'm busy preparing a video about the Vandamm House in North by Northwest, which was inspired by F.L Wright but never existed in reality. Also the houses in A clockwork Orange or Zabriskie Point are interesting.

I remember that scene with Bambi and Thumper attacking Bond in the Elrod house. I thought way back then, if I ever build my own home, that's the style of home I want. I really appreciated how the giant boulders were incorporated into the design. That home was definitely a memorable character in that movie!

I had a similar feeling when I saw the movie for the first time. You should also check the smaller houses by Lautner, like Schaffer house, Tyler, Wallstrom and Salkin: they are also great in style. Showing that Lautner was not only a millionaire archtiect but also great in designing modest lowbuget homes.

Only English and bad French (and even worse Spanish) 😁 My only excuse is - I live quite far from the Dutch border. 😅 (Leipzig / born & raised in Berlin) However I need to visit your country again. Thought about going to Den Haag, Delft, Leiden, Utrecht, .... only been to Amsterdam in the late 90s - even the Taxi cab driver was speaking perfect German back then! 🤓👍 Ha! 😃 Without "A Single Man" I would have probably never found out about John Lautner and never developed my hobby love for architecture, fashion and design. Very entertaining video, Jop. I love your explanations of the movies and the John Lautner houses. I saw Happy Endings and it is not bad. Of course, I didn't know that that was the Schaffer House where it was filmed. But maybe the Schaffer House looked a little familiar when I saw it years later in A Single Man, which is much more serious as a film, and actually employs the house almost as a character. That is my favorite of all the movies you mentioned, and maybe why Schaffer House is one of my favorites of John Lautner's works.

That was very fun and informative. I think the only Lautner house that I knew was in a film was the Chemosphere. The Elrod House and Reiner House, even though I saw the movies, I saw long before i even knew of John Lautner.

Oh nice. Great that you live so close to the house.. i made a whole video about it, live at the other side of the world, and never visited in real life. Maybe you should visit the house and check if my Schaffer video is completely accurate. Haha! I do have visited many other Lautner houses in real life though.

Yes, I'm already busy with preparing a video about the Segel House. But each video takes a lot of research: I have now 90% of the photos necessary for the video. Than I can start with making it. Maybe it will take a few months but believe it will come! :)

Ja ik heb die film ook gezien. Ook het Ennis Huis, van Frank Lloyd Wright, komt in die film voor. Datzelfde huis werd ook gebruikt in Blade Runner. Maar goed, deze compilatie ging alleen over John Lautner...... Waarschijnlijk ga ik over zowel het Ennis Huis als het Lovell Health huis een keer een video maken, maar dat duurt nog even. M'n volgende video gaat over Case Study House 22 (geen ontwerp van Lautner maar wel een heel goed design). Daarna ga ik nog 10 videos over John Lautner maken, en dan heb ik bijna al z'n belangrijke huizen behandeld: dus er komen nog veel videos aan!

No unfortunately that's not true: that was the Sculptured House designed by Charles Deaton, located in Genessee. I do admit that it looks like a Lautner but he was not involved in the project. Still thanks for your comment:)

I thought I deleted this comment, feel so silly! When I checked it out right after writing this. But the upside is, you have a great chan that is deeply inspirational! There was a wild huge intense place in the middle of nowhere in New Mexico we would drive by on the way to visit a hermit scientist - a huge arc coming out of a giant hillside, very large and very remote. It's like Brigadoon at this point!What a great vid, we never get enough Lautner!

Maybe I'm gonna make a similar video about FLW, it will be a long video because many of his houses are used in multiple movies. But first I'm gonna make some videos about other John Lautner and FLW houses. So it will take more than a year before the FLW conpilation will be uploaded I guess
