Really think the gunplay could have worked if they balanced the firepower for the overall game. It has worked before in other games that mix guns and melee. Just need the fine-tuning necessary. Warhammer 40K: Space Marine comes to mind along with Midnight Fight Express. The way they implemented it here really leaves so much to be desired. I ended up putting all the melee and parry buttons on my mouse and placed aiming and shooting on different keys on the keyboard just so I could get through a fights that needed the focus dedicated on the melee. There's a lot to love with this game, but it's certainly flawed to the bone. It's kinda bad, but the best aspects of it keep it afloat just enough for me to appreciate the effort put into the game. Hoping it gets a sequel or spiritual successor. We need more games with a focus on visceral gameplay and combat. Too many "cinematic" games as of late that often get way too sensitive about depicting violence.

So glad you had a review of this one, SJR. I find our opinions on most games gel pretty well. I remember being interested in the previews for this game, but hadn't really heard anything about it since. I picked it up on Prime day yesterday for $20 for the collector's edition on a whim. I might've been a bit disappointed at $60, but for $20 I think I'm in for a pretty good time. I love a big, super polished AAA game (if you can find one anymore) but these lower budget 6 or 7 out of 10 games are where I end up spending a lot of my gaming time and this should fit the bill. You're the man!

I see what you're saying about the shooting which is jarring at times but I've gotten pretty use to it now to make it flow with combat but the thing I find worst then the actual shooting is the camera during close quarters combat its a complete mess especially when you have to counter an enemy that's not in camera view but other than that I find the game really enjoyable.

I didn't have too much trouble with the camera. I just tried to stay out of the corner haha. And don't let them surround you too much. What the game really needs is a move like the flying swallow like Ninja Gaiden where you dash through the air with your sword. The game needs a move where you can quickly get out of a tight area.

@@SuperJumpReviews I played for almost 4 hours! Mostly wasting time playing like RPGs looking for collectibles.. The game really feels like made by people from 2020 in 2005! When it works it pretty fun but when it doesn't it's really frustrating! Like you said in your review the damn cover system is ass especially when you need it! Fighting the first boss after the intro mission... It's made in the most annoying way possible! That were I really felt that shooting and melee both are developed concepts! Camera acts weird when the Hanna is close to a wall or an obstacle! So far it's good when you know how things works but the first boss just didn't feel good (seem like there is only one way to fight him)! The game is like Devil's Third but feels bigger in scope and more polished!

@@SuperJumpReviews I finished it today! I really enjoyed the combat, even the shooting works pretty well, I think you just need to understand how really the devs extended it to be played! I found the voice acting, story and cinematics quite enjoyable, maybe because it reminded me of those old games on Dreamcast and PS2 (nostalgia)! The only really bad thing about the game is the limited enemy types and the camera that ruin many of the fights when need a wall or an obstacle. I would say it's 7 or 8 depends on the day!

I think the mechanics are good. Shoot people with guns use katana against melee enemies. Usually they come in waves of a certain type of enemy. If they took out shooting then they would have to remove all gun wielding enemies. At that point its just ninja gaiden again. Most grunts with guns go down with headshots easy. If they explained this in the game maybe people would like it more. But it takes a dark souls approach where it doesnt tell you shit.

I wish they would’ve gotten rid of the over the shoulder aspect and just gave us a auto lock on system like devil may cry or bayonetta. That way the melee and guns can be used at once.

I enjoyed the game but I have to disagree with you on the shooting. I thought it worked fine. It felt like your gun was meant for taking down other gun grunts as they go down fast especially with a head shot. Melee focused enemies are meant for your blade. The only confusing part within the game is that bulky dude you were shooting since even though he has a gun he fights more like a melee characters. They should've turned his big gun into a sword or something. The only reason I can guess they gave him a gun was to stop the player from running away. I will say that the grenades kind of suck in the game when it comes to tossing them.

Though your review is valid, I do disagree with the gunplay, it's not the gunplay that's the issue for me, but the enemy design with it, so far that I played the enemies are too spongy, and funny enough itagaki made a very similar game like this in 2015 called Devils Third which seemed to have the hybrid gameplay pretty well, despite the game... Not being very good, the enemies aren't spongy but are challenging. Which is what I hoped for this game to have. To me this looks like a spiritual successor to Devils Third.

I actually agree with you on that too. Enemies just aren't programmed to behaved the way they should in a third person shooting which is why I think the shooting just work very well. If they had stayed back a little more, a la gears of war then maybe the might've been a point to the cover system and third person shooting. Instead they charge you pretty much asking to be slice and diced.

feels like the shooting in this game is janky to encourage you to go melee. the checkpoints are too damn long and sometimes you're fighting multiple special enemies that takes you way back to the beginning. and some skills I think should have been available from the beginning (like grenades. a supposed super cop should have known how to throw grenades from the beginning). i think they should have a halfway point for checkpoints, unlocked some base skills, and have new skills (like faster healing, able to heal while running, more healing from finishers, etc), and maybe a improved melee to fight multiple enemies at once, and maybe a lock on to deal with the camera. Neko Chan mode is really tempting..

Love the sound of the enemies screaming when you kill them etc I agree it has some nostalgic feels like older games but I’m utterly disappointed with how it feels and completely agree with all your complaints. I couldn’t even bring myself to push through the very first mission it felt so terrible to me and there are very few games that have let me down so quickly.

As someone who absolutely loves execution animations in games, this is such a disappointment. They could've at least made the game a rogue-lite of some sorts to give it more replay value. The animations look amazing but completely wasted here. Shadow of War remains the king of bad ass animations in a game that is actually excellent.

In this review guy uses a controller and complains that controllers are clumsy and suck. I had zero issues with controlling gun mechanics with a mouse. Not sure it matters though head shots count the same a body shots.

The aiming only feels clumsy cause you can't lock on to enemies which I found very lame. In forspoken (let's not get into the meme stuff) if you aren't locked onto an enemy and do attacks, you'll get some type of aimbot assist but since you aren't locked on it will feel like a huge mess and very clunky, however if you're locked on its sooooo much smoother & I think the lock on mechanic, a bit more tuning on the field of view when ADS, and a camera angle fix patch that doesn't go all crazy in extremely tight close quarters combat could definitely fix those clunky issues. Tbh, this game Is shit... but for some odd reason.. I love it 🤣

DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!!!! I just paid over $30 for this garbage on Playstation website, and it was on sale too. I played it for 3 hours, and it was a biggest disappointment. I deleted the game. The graphics looked SO horrible, and It felt like an unpolished EARLY PS 2 game. The game play was a joke. The movement wasn't even smooth like it was protrayed in the "GAME TRAILER!!" It felt very low quality and somewhat jerky. The aiming for the machine gun was horrible because I couldn't even see the reticle, and It took me several seconds just to locate it during a gun battle. The was NO map available, and I had to locate the boss by running around the entire location. The enemies took forever to die even with a machine gun! The developer stuffed the game with punch of boring and slow cut scenes in order to fill up the game!! I felt like the developer was trying to make a "QUICK CASH GRAB" by producing a poor quality product with misleading game trailer and marketing!! In my opinion, this particualr game was made wtih very low budget and a sloppy development team. The company use terms like "Developed by Ex Ninja Gaiden Development Team" in order to embellish this crappy product. So sick of game trailer trying to mislead consumers, and they have the audacity to charge over $50 for this product. DO NO TBUY THIS GAME. STAY AWAY FROM IT. I wouldn't pay over $5 for this.

Not perfect but is it a Devil's Third successor yes please. It's niche, has action, it's Japanese and a mix of gameplay ideas even if they don't work. It's a game for me. XD Even Vanquish was faster and sleek. Cover system yeah automatic ones or not for a fast paced game I think was a bad idea yeah but I guess options are options. Vanquish wanted the player to not use cover but offered it just encase for both audiences I guess or to prove its point. Censorship sure I guess if its too gore graphic. Not just PS versions of thr game are Xbox versions, are all versions? If fan service then sigh. Sure. If graphic content then yeah understandable I can take that. If it even had a gore on and off or profanity on and off which we barely see in games these days I'd be fine with rhat do players have choices and if I want it on thats fine if it is too much I can turn it to censor it for me. So while Wanted Dead isn't perfect I can keep up with what your footage shows no problem. It has issues sure not surprised but I like the shooting and combat in it. Slow down yeah nice to see like other hack n slashes. I'll get this game cheap as can't right now but yeah it's a me game it has appeal to me all over it in all the right ways of something different in gaming, silly fun and the rough edges don't bother me. :) Do all games nerd to oush hardware I don't think so. We get good gameplay from Indies veterans or low budget Indies and they differ in artstyle, textures and charm. Get AAA games for the hardware but for solid gameplay ideas that aren't the same baeic ones done to death its a rough gameplay game that's AA I'm going to buy any day or Indies. But I also like games taking a mix of ideas even if not perfect. To prove something not copy and paste. Evrn Bayonetta 3 felt likr DMC5 eith a Bayonetta dpin it was not a good game to me. Fun yes good excution in dome areas not at all. Thr fact they had the same issues and a gap in dev time between both and didn't lewrn is my issue with the summons ans the controls suck, skill tree yawn, the rest was fun though. When games are so boring you bet anything different is good enough for me. Skill trees sigh sure they better be good hate skill trees. Just like Red Steel series just without motion controls and a Japanese Dev still trying to make a Japanese shooter which we only got a handful like Vanquish, Binary Domain, Front Mission Evolved, Lost Planet 1&2, I guess Valkyria Chronicles even if a strategy game with third person elements. Games with their silly charm, it's fair gameplay, if bugs sure it's annoying but I never had issues with Devils Third's bugs and it had no updates either to fix them which surprised me. So if Wanted Dead is similar in performance then it would be sad but if it pulls things off well enough then I'm happy. Sure it's not going to be as complex and I play other hack n slashes with deeper combat but for balancing both I don't mind a sacrifice. Not much more to say I like the balance, I liked Devil's Third regardless so this game is for sure for me. It will have issues, some sword/gun use cases I hope are better balanced out but I'll see. No fuel wielding in games besides VR is sad. Melee being pretty eh. I enjoy the odd sword combat. Who else is offering both no body. I get why because yes the depth and better time on one then the other but still I'm happy even if a company attempts it then doesn't at all.

tried this once again during the weekend and i still have a hard time w the gameplay on pc"mouse+keyboard"...Its not far from horrible is my feeling and i guess for those who play w controller??? the shooting is worst of it all(better w mele attacks kicks n other,but shooting is just bad so nope"... Voice is not the best either.sounde like she is deaf when she talks(almost sounds like a tv series that was on tv in the 90s where it had a deaf advocat and she sounded like this kind of+NO No and NO nothing against deaf people,But the truth is the truth!! leveling up is ok but weapons shooting is so bad so if u are waiting for a shooting game forget that at once.......swords was much better
