If you have a possessive noun like New York's, Lise's, the dog's, etc. or a possessive adjective like my, your, its, etc. then this replaces the article "the." Since we use "the" to show a specific noun, and since the possessive noun/adjective does that same function, we don't need "the" anymore. Hope that helps!
