Superman (also marketed as Superman: The Movie) is a 1978 superhero film based on the DC Comics superhero Superman, played by Christopher Reeve. It is the first of four installments in the Superman film series starring Reeve as Superman. The film was directed by Richard Donner based on a screenplay by Mario Puzo, David Newman, Leslie Newman, and Robert Benton. In addition to Reeve, the film features an ensemble cast including Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman, Jeff East, Margot Kidder, Glenn Ford, Phyllis Thaxter, Jackie Cooper, Trevor Howard, Marc McClure, Terence Stamp, Valerie Perrine, Ned Beatty, Jack O'Halloran, Maria Schell, and Sarah Douglas. It depicts the origin of Superman, including his infancy as Kal-El of Krypton, son of Jor-El (Brando), and his youthful years in the rural town of Smallville. Disguised as reporter Clark Kent, he adopts a mild-mannered disposition in Metropolis and develops a romance with Lois Lane (Kidder) while battling the villainous Lex Luthor (Hackman).
Ilya Salkind had the idea of a Superman film in 1973 and, after a difficult process with DC Comics, the Salkinds bought the rights to the character the following year. Several directors, most notably Guy Hamilton, and screenwriters were associated with the project before Donner was hired to direct. Tom Mankiewicz was drafted in to rewrite the script and was given a creative consultant credit. It was decided to film both Superman and its sequel Superman II (1980) simultaneously, with principal photography beginning in March 1977 and ending in October 1978. Tensions arose between Donner and the producers, and a decision was made to stop filming the sequel, of which 75 percent had already been completed, and finish the first film.[7]
The most expensive film made up to that point, with a budget of $55 million,[8][9] Superman premiered at The Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, on December 10, 1978, and was released in the United Kingdom on December 14, and in the United States on December 15. The film was a critical and financial success; its worldwide box office earnings of $300 million made it the second-highest-grossing release of the year. It received praise for Reeve's performance and John Williams's musical score,[10] and was nominated for Best Film Editing, Best Music (Original Score), and Best Sound at the 51st Academy Awards, and received a Special Achievement Academy Award for Visual Effects.[11] Groundbreaking in its use of special effects and science fiction/fantasy storytelling, the film's legacy presaged the mainstream popularity of Hollywood's superhero film franchises. In 2017, Superman was selected for preservation by the Library of Congress's National Film Registry.

You're right, that's all crystal- Kryptonian technology had advanced to the point that everything is crystalline including things like computers and vehicles. The crystal Jor-El gave to Superman was basically a Kryptonian Wikipedia along with an incredibly advanced AI assistant.

I grew up on Christopher Reeve, with this film being my favorite comic book movie film of all time. That said I still like Henry Cavill and Snyder's interpretation for various reasons, but I'm not a closed minded. I can see the good in both because I'm actually a comic book fan and I love Superman. I really hate when people do this crap with this division, I understand that if the person completely desecrates the role, but he did not do that it wasn't like Jared Leto playing him, 🤣.

Superman has x-ray vision which is how he knew what contents Lois had in her purse. Thought most people knew that. It’s about as common knowledge as kryptonite being Superman’s weakness is.

* Have you seen that music video here on KZbin called *Superman* *Tribute:* *Christopher* *Reeve* - *Three* *Doors* *Down* - *Kryptonite* by "Nerd ReCuts"? It's pretty good, and....what are the odds that they would cast someone who had almost exactly the same last name as the actor who starred in the 1951 Superman movie that preceded the 1950's Superman tv series. His name was "George Reeves", whereas the actor's name in the 1978 Superman movie was "Christopher Reeve". So, eerily close...but no cigar. Oddly enough, his name had nothing to do with why they chose him to play the part. * As it turns out, George Reeves was shot and murdered by "Leonore Lemmon", but that was 1959, and police investigations were not very good yet at that time. So for a long time, it was dismissed as a suicide. I came up with a story outline for a Superman origin story that goes into vast detail of how the powers came into being, their nature, precisely what caused it, the involvement of higher dimensional beings with higher levels of consciousness who can glimpse into the future and have extremely advanced knowledge of genetic engineering that is affected by stellar gamma ray photons, particle radiation, electromagnetic radiation, the energy flux of its radiant energy, its solar luminosity, its stellar nucleosynthesis, and of course its chemical composition. * It would involve ancient Kryptonians developing interstellar spacecraft, and conducting expedition missions to other solar systems, one of which being the Earth. They crash landed on Earth, becoming the very first "homo-sapiens" as it were. A war breaks out on Krypton where weapons of mass destruction are deployed, almost causing their own extinction-level event. After knocking themselves back to the stone age, they had to start over. When they finally reached the space age once again, this would be were these higher dimensional beings are given the authority to impart this super secret, sacred knowledge of extremely advanced genetic engineering that is triggered and interacts with stellar phenomenon. * This knowledge was implanted in the mind of "Kal-El's" maternal grandfather "Lor-Van". Which he imparted onto his daughter "Lara Lor-Van". They went through a number of test subject before created their son "Kal-El"(The Chosen One). The very first was a dog, simply named "Krypto", but was placed into cryogenic storage. You can probably find a list somewhere on the internet of all the Kryptonians that have super powers, including General Zod, who became the Supreme Commander of the Kryptonian military even though he was a test subject. General Zod wanted the secret to the genetic engineering that Lara Lor-Van possessed. * He had developed a weapon of mass destruction that could destroy a star(kind of like the weapon developed by Dr. Tolian Soran in Star Trek Generations or The First Orders "Starkiller" superweapon that could do the same in Star Wars The Force Awakens). Kal-El's father "Jor-El II" was the inventor of interstellar propulsion, and had designed and built General Zod's flagship, the "UKS Phantom Zone". Unfortunately, superior ability breed superior ambition. When Krypton tried to remove Zod from power, he played his last card, like so many villains do when they can't have the world. If they're going to die, they're gonna take the world with them in a final act of defiance. * Unfortunately, since the super weapon was a beyond top secret black project, and no demonstrations had been given, Krypton assumed he was bluffing. So he launched the weapon, and plotted a course for Earth, where they believed ancient Kryptonians now lived. Fortunately, Jor-El believed Zod's threat was real, and was able to finish preparing an artificially intelligent unmanned interstellar spacecraft, but was able to convert its payload to support 1 child-sized passenger......his son, where he would be placed in cryogenic storage, being provided everything he needed for the trip to Earth, where Jor-El also believed the ancient Kryptonians and their descendants have been living for all these long years. * This would explain why Kal-El cares so much for "Humans", and is torn between telling us our true origins, or allowing us to believe that we are our own people, not the survivors of another. The sacred genetic knowledge died with Kal-El's mother "Lara". It is believed that Kal-El was chosen by these higher dimensional beings, to deal with some future event. Perhaps "Darkseid" or "Doomsday" or both. Perhaps there's something even worse than them, but if you went with my story narrative here, it is kind of assumed that Kal-El has been given the authority by a higher power to protect and guide humans(Kryptonians) the best that he can, without doing *ALL* the work for us. Merely, helping to give us a fighting chance to survive, evolve, and ascend. * Giving Krypton a second chance so to speak. For those who don't want to subscribe to the notion that humans are the descendants of ancient Kryptonian interstellar survivors, you could always say that it is merely Kal-El's assumption, and was never able to prove his assertion. We leave off, where Kal-El begins to explore the galaxy. Whether he uses time travel or not, is not known yet at this point, like he used it in this movie. We don't fully understand yet how the relationship between time travel, and the multiverse theory works. We would need to know that first, in order to know whether using time travel to explore the galaxy would be practical, or not. Which would make him, not only, an astronaut, but a chrononaut as well. Well.....that's all I can think of pertaining to Superman.....at any rate.

Best Superman imo. Saw it when I was 16 when it first came out. The lines to get tickets were insane. That bit of acting in Lois'apartment where Reeve goes back abd forth between Clark and Superman is superb acting. He's the only one who made it believable that no one realized Clark and Superman were the same person.
