Christopher Reeve gives you everything you need for Superman to be the character he's meant to be, he's got the confidence and charm to make him the hero you envision; while also giving you the awkward and cringe to bring out Clark Kent. Truly loved this movie and was happy to finally see a great adaptation of Superman since DC films have been pretty meh as of late!

What's funny, is you can take the 1940s Fleischer cartoon theme, hum it and it can transition beautifully into the John Williams score which can then transform into the Hans Zimmer score. I can't wait to hear the theme for Superman 2025.

It's probably my favourite film tune of all time. It has at least 2 or 3 iconic themes within that one piece of music. You cannot recreate or beat that feeling that John Williams gives - like something epic and majestic is about to happen.

This is in the period of PEAK John Williams. He was on fire from 75-85, with Jaws, Star Wars, Superman, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Indiana Jones, E.T. and the 1984 Olympics. Everything he scored in this period is just pure gold.

Only reason why is because they didn't know how well the first film would do, so they guerilla shot most of it side by side with the first film. Then they finished up the production in half the time for the sequel.

@@DEATH111183 No the problem was that they fired Donner during the production of part 2 and brought in Richard Lester and changed and reshot many scenes in a more campy comedic way. You can tell a lot the scenes that had Lesters name on it. Some of slapstick comedy which can be seen in the big street showdown in the city. The guy on the payphones talking and laughing not even paying attention even after the super breath from Zod and gang is happening knocked him over. Or the guy whose toupee blows off while is wife is freaking out about the wind messing up her hair and he responds, "Your hair, what about mine!". The campiness explains why Superman 3 became just so campy. Lester directed it from the beginning thus why it had none of the signature Donner feel.

Christopher Reeve is the BEST Superman hands down. He captures the boy scout Superman from the comic books. Also, I don't care how much CGI has hit, what can be done nowadays, etc. that final shot of Christopher Reeve as Superman in space breaking the fourth wall and smiling at the viewing audience is the greatest comic book film shot ever. He was, is and always will be the greatest. What a Hero.

Imagine seeing that smile scene at the movie theater as a 5 years old kid. I went to see Superman II with my grandfather (at that time I haven’t seen part I) and it just blew my mind away that “Superman” looked and smile directly at me (that’s what I thought back in 1981). 😂 I still remember that whole day clearly today.

"You'll Believe A Man Can Fly" was the original tag line for this movie and people agreed. Whatever advances we've made in CGI (and steroids) Christopher Reeve's earnestness just hasn't been matched by anyone else playing Superman. Throw in that John Williams score and badass Margot Kidder as Lois and it's tough to beat.

One of the greatest shots in this film is when Superman leaves Lois on the balcony after the “interview”, and in one solid, uninterrupted shot, the camera pans from the balcony, into the apartment and to the front door where Clark is knocking. It’s just a brilliantly planned and set up shot that demonstrates Superman’s incredible speed, but sets up for Lois to see Clark and Superman as two different people. Just amazing filmmaking.

Christopher Reeve was a drama student at the Juilliard School, which only takes 20 new students a year, and was a roommate (and lifelong best friend) with Robin Williams. Ironically, both men struck career gold in 1978, Chris with Superman and Robin with Mork on Happy Days, and then Mork and Mindy. Chris really took the role seriously. He did the body language, slouching as Clark and standing tall as Superman, and even parted his hair differently as each one. He also used Cary Grant as a model of how to act, as Clark and Superman, because Grant could be bumbling and geeky in one movie and suave and debonair in the next one. Chris also started an intense workout under the tutelage of another actor, David Prowse (aka the man in Darth Vader's armor in the original Star Wars films). Before this, Chris was an unknown New York stage actor with one minor film credit. After this film, he was a superstar. Even after Chris had an accident that left him paralyzed from the neck down, he became a hero for many people, using his fame to raise money for spinal column research. Until he died, everyone, including Chris, believed he would walk again. He made us all believe a man could fly and we believed he would walk again. You guys should look at the trailer for the upcoming documentary, Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story. It releases soon. Superman II is excellent. The story about this and the second film is a bit long, so there are two versions: the theatrical cut and the Donner Cut. I prefer the Donner Cut, as Donner directed most of the second film before the producers fired him. When he made this film, Marlon Brando (Jor-El) became the highest-paid movie star in the world, with a salary of over $3 million and a large share of the profits. This was also the second film that has both Brando's and writer Mario Puzo's names on it...the other was The Godfather (Puzo won an Oscar by adapting his own best-selling novel, and Brando won the Oscar for Best Actor as Don Vito Corleone). Brando did not memorize any of his lines; he read everything off of cue cards and filmed everything in 12 days. John Wiliams was nominated for the Best Score Oscar but lost to Midnight Express.

The two things that really stand out to me every time i watch this are Superman taking time to rescue a kitten in a tree (no problem too small, and he has time for even the youngest of us), and the final line of the film, "We're all part of the same team", showing his humility and that he sees himself as one of us. Ive always said, when Superman is done right that it is as if the sun exists just for him, because of all he does for our world. Reeve and Donner (and Williams) totally did this right! So glad you loved this as much as you did!

FUN FACT! In the scene where young Clark is running past the train.. Lois Lane's parents are played by Noel Neill, who played Lois Lane on the 1950's TV show.. and Kirk Alyn, the first person to play Superman in the live action serials in the 1940's! Noel Neill, who also played the old lady Lex Luthor swindled at the beginning of Superman Returns, wore one of her outfits from the old TV show for her cameo.. ALSO... Not only was Superman's father, Jor-El, played by Marlon Brando.. who played Vito Corleone in The Godfather.. The script fir Superman 1 and 2 was written by Mario Puzo.. the man who wrote The Godfather books! And yes it was ballsy of them to set up Zod at the beginning of this movie.. but they were filming Superman 1 and 2 at the same time. There are 2 versions of Superman 2 as well.. The director was fired with about 75% of Superman 2 done and they reshot alot of it to make it more humorous.

Thank you both for not only a wonderful reaction…but for truly understanding Superman, and most importantly for recognizing how important Christopher Reeve is to the fandom. You also hit the nail on the head when it comes to why Man of Steel failed where this movie succeeded. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone describe it as perfectly as you did here. This film had Hope and charm, and brightness and warmth. It truly had everything that MOS sadly lacked, in so many ways! Man of Steel lost the heart, and never even had the awareness to try and find it…and no offense to Henry Cavill, but Christopher Reeve was everything he is not. There simply is no comparing them. I say this as someone that of course grew up knowing Christopher Reeve as not just Superman, but eventually seeing him as a real life hero. He embodied everything that the character represents, even before his accident, he understood and lived everything that Superman (and Clark) is. He also is the only one to truly make the Clark Kent disguise believable in such a subtle and yet brilliant way, by making Clark and Superman two very different people. I highly recommend you look into the brand new documentary, “Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story,” that literally has a limited theatrical release starting tomorrow in the US, Saturday Sept. 21, as well as what would have been Christopher’s 72nd birthday, next Wednesday Sept. 25. I am lucky to have tickets to see it on its premiere night tomorrow…sorry for the late notice, but the timing just so happens to be what it is. I hope that, if you’re interested, you can check it out! I imagine it will eventually be made available for a wider release and/or on streaming, but no idea when or where…they’re keeping that information very tight lipped. It seems like it will definitely be a wonderful and poignant film, well worth checking out (I’ve packed an entire box of Kleenex for my screening!). Anyway. Thanks again for the reaction…I hope you check out Superman 2! I think you’ll enjoy it…both the Lester and Donner Cut (I definitely recommend watching the original Lester Cut first)! 😊

12:20 the speech at THAT moment in your vid is probably the best reason to hate Snyder's interpretation of the Superman mythos. The simple realization that Clark has, that even with all that godlike power, he is not a god, and he couldn't do anything about the death of the man who raised and loved him his entire life. He could not save his father. Johnathan Kent's death in this movie is so much more impactful than what happened in MoS.

Puzo wrote an enormous, unfilmable screenplay several hundred pages long that was by most accounts a mess. Robert Benton and David Newman received co-writing credit, but director Richard Donner thought Tom Mankiewicz deserved credit for writing much of the shooting draft used, and when the Writer's Guild didn't credit him, Donner gave him a "creative consultant" credit that apparently annoyed the guild. In the DVD commentary, Donner says to Mankiewicz over the credits: "Creative Consultant in this case meaning you wrote the movie...".

I think the biggest difference between the Man of Steel Superman and *this* Superman, is that this Superman is one full of hope. In Man of Steel, Superman feels like he doesn't have much - if any - hope, and is expecting bad at all times. Superman 2 is a great watch, also, and you absolutely should watch it! And fun fact, Superman and Superman 2 were actually originally filmed as a single movie. For whatever reason (I forget what, exactly, but probably $$$ if we're being real), the studio decided to break it into two movies, instead. That's also why you end up with the relatively strange and out of place ending with Supe' flying super-fast to cause time travel. Originally, Supe' was going to succeed without such overpowered and out-of-place actions, and the plot for Superman 2 was going to be the big final act for this movie. But they both ended up as pretty good movies, arguably thanks mostly to the great acting from Reeve and the rest of the cast, and the fantastic musical score. Great reaction, though! Look forward to seeing you watch the next one!

G'day it's Steven from Down Under It's great to see younger generations enjoying the pioneering superhero film of all time. I was just nine years old when this movie was released in 1978, and when I walked out of the cinema here in Sydney I recall looking up in the sky hoping to see Superman, but of course that never happened. As for the film score, well that was thanks to Mr John Williams, whose huge talent also produced the soundtrack for other blockbuster movies including: Star Wars, Jaws, E.T, Close Encounters of the third kind and Raiders of the Lost Ark etc. Also y'all have somehow managed to stumble upon one of the longer versions too it seems. There's no doubt that Mr Christopher Reeve was undoubtedly the best cast actor for this role...RIP Chris. I've literally watched this film and Superman 2 hundreds of times, and as for Superman 3 & 4, well I don't really recommend either of them but they may be entertaining enough for you both. Y'all mentioned Zack Snyder's adaptation, well I'm not a fan of ZS but I certainly enjoyed Man of Steel, and can definitely say that Henry Cavill was excellently cast hence the financial success of MofS, too bad we didn't see much more of him in subsequent films with more character development. I'm a fan of Superman and not any particularly privileged movie maker like ZS or James Gunn, I certainly hope that Superman 2025 is a success for the sake of Warner Bros / DC and Superman because Warner Bros have a dreadful reputation of interfering and making terrible decisions when it comes to DC movies. Considering Warner Bros / DC have chosen to go cheap with this upcoming movie using B-grade actors and a B-grade director I'm already concerned, and as for that new ill fitted Superman suit with the high fitting red shorts with the built in adult diapers...meh. 🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞

“Ever time they find something that works, they just keep doing it over and over” [from the outro, referring to Marvel humor] This is exactly right. In comics, in the 80s, dark versions of Superheros were an innovation: Watchmen, V for Vendetta, Punisher, Daredevil, and the reimagining of Batman all worked well, and sold well. Because prior to that, all superheroes were goody goody and silly. The Adam West 60s Batman is the perfect example of this. So the “dark and gritty” versions were revolutionary for their time because they were a more serious, more interesting look at something that was at times naive and childish. And that perspective certainly had its place, especially at that point in time. But then they went on and did that with almost every hero. Zack Snyder is a child of this, and that is why his movies are the way they are. It doesn’t understand the reason for making some heroes dark and gritty, and just assumes that dark= sophistication. However, there are more crayons in the crayonbox than Black, and black is not the right choice for every occasion. And Superman ought not wear black. Variety is important. Innovation is key. Going dark to expose naivety can work if done correctly, but dark for dark’s sake is just cynicism, and Superman is inherently optimistic. I guess I strayed from the original topic of Marvel humor a bit, but the same rules apply: copying a popular style gets stale quickly, and people start forgetting why it worked in the first place. It is doing something different that will really draw attention. I mean…. Unless it sucks…

This movie really started it all. It showed how to successfully adapt superheroes in major motion pictures. We likely would've never had Batman in 1989 and all the current Marvel movies if not for this film. Superman II is a great sequel, but there's actually two versions of it. There's the theatrical version and the Donner Cut. Director Richard Donner was directing both movies back-to-back, but he was fired midway through Superman II. He was replaced by Richard Lester to complete the film, cutting some of what Donner had already filmed, adding more humorous scenes, and giving Superman some new unexplained powers. The movie was still a success, but Donner's original footage was stumbled upon in a warehouse 20 years later, and they were able to piece together a version of the film that was closer to what Donner had originally intended. Unfortunately, the franchise would start its decline after that with Superman III, which leaned even further into the comedy. It would be followed by Superman IV: The Quest For Peace, which was made on the cheap and signaled the end of the franchise for many years. 2006's Superman Returns is actually part of this franchise's continuity, picking up a few years after Superman II while completely ignoring III and IV. But its underwhelming critical and commercial response ended any plans to continue this version of Superman.
