My god, Reeve is just so damn good as Supes. He plays Clark, Superman, Kal-El as 3 different personalities. His speech pattern, body language, the whole nine. There will never be an actor who captures that essence nearly as much as him.

Plus how freaking dedicated he was to not wearing body pads but actually getting that built. He was always tall & great looking but he was so so thin just a regular tall lanky kid as hrs only 24 here. They filmed all this in 77 & reeve was born the very end of 52 in late Dec so to go from like 160 to 240 of pure muscle is incredible. He also had blonde hair they dyed black which looks great w/ those blue eyes. Geez sorry he was so talented so gorgeous so young & for what happened to him is so tragic. I ll keep it upbeat I agree he really plays superman clark amazing & u make a great point rarely did we see kal el as regular kryptonisn only in talking to his dad or mom in lesters version.

Not their first argument, to be sure. He spent years there learning and being re-educated. If he was brought up religious, then Jor-El would have to deal with that, as well as if he had race-hatred, superstitions or selfishness. The Kents may have raised him well for Smallville, but doubtless there were something he believed that needed to be addressed. Superman should have explained to Lois that his Clark Kent persona was a memory and an exaggeration of who he was growing up.

This is why I think the Richard Donner cut is better, it feels more connected to the first film by having Marlon Brando as Jor-El take away his powers rather than the mother. While the theatrical cut is watchable, I would consider it to be more of its own movie than a sequel, the Donner cut is definitely my preferred version, mainly because of Marlon Brando

@@sandal_thong The 90s TV series was all about Clark wanting to be loved as the real person, so while Lois was into Superman and hostile or indifferent to Clark, even though Clark loved/wanted her, he kind of kept his distance, and didn't tell her the secret, until she became friends with and then willing to date Clark. And that Lois had NO clue about the double life, even as she couldn't figure out why, if Clark Kent wanted a relationship with her, he kept disappearing. Here, it does feel like Lois is in love with the Superman persona and disillusioned once de-powered Clark gets beat up. Such an awesome scene and the Donner Cut team did a great job putting this together. The theatrical version (Richard Lester) with Lara is also excellent, with arguably better dialog, a more mature-looking Christopher Reeve, and a wonderful detail of Lara stepping out of the crystal. Everything also looks much more polished, plus it features Lois/Margot Kidder, which Donner hadn't yet shot for this scene. However, THIS version is the best because it's father, not mother. This whole conversation MUST be with his father! I don't care about pay disputes, the decision to cut Jor-El/Brando out of the movie was SO stupid, since it's all about him, really! Kal-El is to Superman what God is to Jesus. Another detail I love about this one is that moment at the end when Jor-El looks up at Lois. It's chilling, because up until that point you don't think the hologram is even aware of her, but there's actually a look of judgement! Scary stuff! Amazing film! :-)

Thought it odd that he went to talk to his father and didn't consult Lois about it before doing it. "I wish he were here," said Clark while bleeding. She's shallow and selfish, but he had to learn the hard way that it wouldn't work out. She even admits to being mean to Clark. As a woman, I would not have let him give up his powers for me. Superman really loved her but regretted it later when Zod and company came to earth. He didn't know about them. His mother tried to warn him, but he didn't listen. When I saw that crystal, I knew he would reverse chamber and get his powers back. I was so happy. I love ❤️ Superman 1 and 2. Christopher Reeve was so handsome. He was and still is the best Superman in my book.

I was thinking the same, Lois failed the love test by not speaking up. She should have been selfless instead of silent. And yes, Reeve is incomparable.

Superman 2 is basically the Last Temptation of Superman: Superman gives up his powers in order to live with the human woman he loves, but discovers he can't have that life soon enough. This scene is from the Donner Cut, filmed in 1977 but only assembled for released in 2006. It's a little clunky - you can tell they needed a stand-in for the depowering itself (it was never filmed for this cut) - but still starkly different in feel to the scene that ended-up in the theatrical release of "Superman 2", where Superman talks to his mother instead of his father about his sincere love for Lois Lane. Instead, it feels more (tonally) like the first Superman film and the scenes with Jor-El in them.

This depowering was far more intense than the original. You can sense the disappointment of Jor-El and the desperation of Clark Kent when they speak.

His father re-educated him, although Clark had an OK upbringing, not being cruel, selfish or vain. After he realizes he made a mistake, his father gives him one more chance, but then pretty much says, "I've taught you enough, time to be your own man."

I liked both versions of this scene equally. Susannah York also did an outstanding job as Kal-El's mother, even though her role was small. Her delivery resonated as well as Brando's. But the Donner cut was interesting for revealing Kal-El's true feelings about not wanting to be in service to humanity forever.

I liked _Supergirl_ starring Helen Slater, and wondered how that would go forward with Jimmy learning Superman's identity and Superman learning about his people alive in Innerspace (Argo City). I imagine they could have done a movie where Brainiac takes a city from Krypton (Kandor) so there's even more of his people alive somewhere. Another version in the comics has him mating with Wonder Woman, although they don't seem to be a married couple.

*That’s what we call a Reality Tunnel -* “If you will not be Kal-El, if you will live as one of them, love their kind as one of them, then it follows that you must *become* one of them. This crystal chamber has in it the harnessed rays of the red sun of Krypton. Once exposed to them all your great powers on Earth will disappear... forever. Once this is done, there's no going back. You will feel like an ordinary man and you can be harmed like an ordinary man. Think, Kal-El, I beg you. Kal-El: Father... *I love her.* [ Yeah, TODAY. ] Jor-El: Think, Kal-El.

Christopher Reeve was such an underrated actor. Look at this scene and the one in the theatrical cut back to back. Despite the dialogue being very similar, Reeve finds a way to add different textures to each interaction: with Jor El his “father… I love her!” Line is very pointed and defiant, as he knows his father is trying to scare him and dissuade him. While the line “mother… I love her.” Is said with such sweetness and warmth, as Lara is more frightened for him.
