Credit where due: Superman PS1 was certainly revolutionary in inventing "Wait and regen for a few minutes after a dicey battle" mechanics a whole two console generations early. No, the Halo shields don't count. Also the ransom arc is wild; dude really thought he was gonna shake people down by threatening a product so universally reviled by name, difference in port or not. The man decided to be a petty single issue Batman villain bout the proceedings rather than just be a pal. Glad nobody broke down and paid him, though, because tht's frankly a dick move to tug at the anxieties of game preservationists.

Jurassic Park Trespasser released in 1998 and had 100% regenerating health. Hydlide is a 1984 rpg and has regenerating health when standing still on a grass tile.

Here's one weird thing: Superman 64 was one of the open world games on N64. It's training level had no boundary except the rings and a single NPC below them, so you can explore their entire version of digital Metropolis without a timer or mission.

So the PlayStation version is better than the N64 version but only marginally so. To quote the AVGN, "That's not saying much. That's like saying the shit I took last night was better than the shit I took the day before." But seriously, it is the year 2024 and whether it's the N64 version or the PlayStation version, Superman 64 is STILL the most well-known and talked about Superman game. Let that sink in for a moment.

13:33-13:40 Clark Kent doesn’t have a single interaction with Jimmy Olsen in the Snyderverse or the old DCEU which to me is just such and excuses be damned even if he didn’t know him, he could’v be someone Superman saves at the beginning of BVS, support the argument Superman is a good guy and help Lois figure out how Lex Luthor manipulated Batman and Superman into fighting each. Whatever happens in James Gunn’s Superman movie I guarantee you Jimmy Olsen will be done justice after what happened 8 years ago

Bad game or not, credit where credit is due. That health system is basically the Halo health system from H2 onward. So, if this would have made it to market rather than being canned, it may very well have been the first game to use it. Wouldn't that have been a strange world to live in.

I find funny that they bothered to doodle up some "mission failed screens" for this game and then they just have metallo'sreference sheet pose for the metallo bossfight game over, it makes it look like superman just tripped on the sidewalk and Metallo is just confused at the scene

There is something kind of funny that this was once believed to be an amazing game and a legendary piece of lost media because the N64 version was horrendous. Only for a rom to finally surface to reveal its standard licensed garbage. To give the N64 version some credit, it at least tried to be ambitious and big. It just failed really hard at that. This PS1 version doesn’t even seem like it was trying to be anything.

With all due respect to the folks at Rerez, I can't agree with them when they say "Superman the man of steel is worse than Superman 64" Superman The man of steel is a bad game, but as hard as that game is and how dumb the story is, at least it's possible to beat that game without cheating, Superman 64 is such a glitchy unfinished mess you can't beat it without complete cheating, and even then it's still feels near impossible!

Superman games have a bad track record. I think there are plenty of cited issues. 1. Superman is one of the most powerful characters in fiction, so portraying him in a lore-accurate way while also providing a decent challenge is a difficult goal to obtain. 2. Most of Superman's rogues gallery can't really hold a story. Characters like Lex Luthor, Brainiac, or Darkseid can be an overarching villain in a long story about a series of challenges, but that's pretty much where it ends. Most of Superman's villains (Metallo, Parasite, Bizarro, heck even Doomsday to be honest) are often portrayed more as obstacles rather than as engaging villains with deep motivations. 3. Players bend rules. Providing player freedom comes at the cost of them being able to make Superman do out-of-character actions such as turning his heat vision on innocent people or throwing cars with people in them. I'm looking at you, Superman Returns. 4. There's already a bad stigma. Superman-licensed games have a bad track record, so convincing a skilled development team to take the challenge is difficult. Going off of point 1, some of the obvious ways to put Superman in a scenario where he could conceivably face a serious challenge include 1. Have the game take place early in his life when he's getting the hang of his powers. 2. Have the game take place on a planet that orbits a red star or have him get exposed to Kryptonite early on to explain why he's vulnerable. 3. Have the game take place on Apokolips and/or have all the enemies be opponents who could actually pose a genuine threat. That said, all of them have the issue of depowering a character who should be incredible to control and would homogenize the encounters. Most people feel like a Superman game that doesn't take place in Metropolis would feel disingenuous.
