Personal theory regarding this shared universe: This comic and any that might share its universe is one where the heroes never faced a Crisis Event; No Secret Wars, No Civil War, No Crisis on Infinite Earths, etc. Each hero took care of their own city, would bump into each other in certain events, and the world was more peaceful

J Jonah Jamison's had quite the character development post-One More Day. He had a heart attack, the Daily Bugle was sold to a tabloid mogul and became a gossip magazine, Jonah ran for mayor and won, using his new connections to try to capture Spidey, the physical building for the Daily Bugle was destroyed, his dad married Aunt May, he lost his wife in an attack by Alistair Smyth, but promised to put his hatred for Spidey aside and help him in any way he could (unfortunately Doc Ock took control of Spidey's body just a few months later), he got blackmailed by the Superior Spider-man, losing his job as the blackmail became public but somehow getting his position as publisher for the Daily Bugle back, he lost his dad to a heart disease, Spidey revealed himself to Jonah as Peter, showing him how they're still family and he trusts him, and after a few issues of dealing with this revelation, he's become arguably Spider-man's strongest supporter, even going back in time with Spidey and telling his younger self to go easy on Peter (who just started working for JJJ) since the kid will help him in more ways than he'll realize. JJJ has arguably had more character development in the past 10 years than he has had in 50 years of comics, where he was a proud, arrogant jerk but had a heart of gold and would always look out for his employees when they really needed it, and whose hatred of Spider-man was based entirely on being envious of him doing the right thing while seeking no reward.

I had this comic when I was a kid, and read it multiple times. And I have to disagree... I remember Spider-Man coming off looking much more heroic and interesting that Superman in the story. Maybe it was because they showed him having such a hard time, that you couldn't help feel for him. They placed him squarely as the story's focus, and probably most importantly, as its underdog. He's the one who went through a character arc--all his hard luck made him doubt himself and he wondered if he shoudl quit, but instead he rallies and decides to try and help anyway. And despite the other heroes' vast power, it was Spider-Man who made all the difference in the story. I especially remember the ending. Superman was holding the reactor core together, but only barely, and it was killing him and it was only a matter of time before he lost control and the thing exploded. It was all up to Spider-Man to rig a bypass for the safeties with technology he'd never seen before, with nothing but some bent wire as a tool. I remember loving that it wasn't Peter's powers that ultimately saved everyone, it was his scientific knowledge that he's learned as just old plain Peter Parker. It blew my little 13 year old mind. I guess there's a difference when reading these kind of stories as a kid and reading them as an adult. But even so, it really seemed to me like it was truly Peter Parker's story, and the other characters were just supporting characters in it.

Ian R. Nava Huber I imagine that Luthor and Doom would be a lot like Trump and Putin, with the former using the latter's resources to gain power. Luthor's a power-hungry sociopath, but he's nothing if not pragmatic. If he stands to personally profit from an alliance, he'll keep it going.

Aunt May being immortal would be an interesting take on One More Day. In addition to erasing their marriage, Mephisto makes May unable to die, but she's still a frail old lady, meaning Peter has to constantly take care of her medical bills. After all, the only thing worse than letting a loved one die is watching them live on in misery for the rest of your life.

"It felt like Spider-Man was playing second fiddle to Superman for most of the story until the end" I mean... isn't that kind of the point? Spider-Man is the average man of the story, trying to get by as well as he can, the down on his luck Superhero that tries his best to be the hero he wants to be... but is constantly held back by his insecurities and bad luck, while Superman is... Superman the OG hero, the man who has almost everything figured out about himself and has everything under control, his only problems (at least in the Silver Age) were related to how well he felt he could adjust to the world and whether or not his actions are for the good or bad of mankind, if he does too much. So it makes sense that in a crossover Spider-Man would look up to Superman as something he wishes he could be, as Superman is everything he wants to be, the hero that everyone adores and respects, who gets along with everyone and is the center of attention for most of the action. Spider-Man feeling like a bit player actually totally fits his character, as he is just the everyman in a larger world, not something Doom would even bother with because he isn't worth his time, until the very end where Spider-Man proves why he's such a great hero by being able to go against the odds against people he shouldn't be able to fight, and ultimately being the dude that saves the day. If anything it was the perfect Superman/Spider-Man crossover, as it what would actually happen if these two ever met. Spider-Man feeling inadequate compared to the larger than life Superman, while also being able to save Superman from the robot, the kryptonite, using his brains to stop the machine while Superman uses his muscles, and inadvertently saving the Parasites life with his powers, it actually has his being way more useful than the first crossover. I mean... complaining that Spider-Man feels like he isn't equal to Superman seems weird, especially since its how Spider-Man has always acted, being a second fiddle to some of the larger heroes but being crafty enough to find a way to win. So i think this crossover actually represented both characters pretty well. TL;DR: I don't feel that Spider-Man was misrepresented in this crossover, he felt completely in character in comparison to Superman. It felt like the best type of crossover with these two characters, from the character interactions from the Daily Bugle/Daily Planet staff, to the villains feeling like an actual threat to both characters, to the fact that both characters don't go the "We are heroes, we must fight" routine. But hey, that's just my opinion.
@sebastiankrant2738
@sebastiankrant2738 6 жыл бұрын
You have a great point here and I agree. I think however that its a general problem if you team up characters that face so different situations - superman, the almost all powerfull god that either fights cosmic treats, machinations that cant be fought head on or just the general problem of beeing so powerfull, but cant help everyone - and spiderman the "normal" guy who is often head over heels in his own problems and constantly struggling with relativly simple stuff. Sure, you can have a nice character dynamic as explaine by you, but it also still makes the "lesser" hero seem inadequte. Essentially, every threat big enough for superman means that Spiderman has no chance whatsoever and is relegated to "get/free/call superman". This works better with batman rather with spiderman, because you can more easily relegate batman to non-combat duty and still see him contribute his full set of skills and strengths in equal measure given how he is very much about his knowledge, intellect and tons of different skills. Spiderman, while his intellect plays a core part, still is superstrong, has enhanced reflexes and so on. Those are more or less useless however against anything that wants to provide a threat for superman, so he "only" has his intelligence.
@AVGNROCKS1996
@AVGNROCKS1996 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but that's always been Spider-Man's problem. He's just a really strong and smart dude in a world that has Gods, rage monsters, super genius inventors, and sorcerers. But that doesn't make him useless, take Spider-Man vs Juggernaut, it only really happens because no other hero was there to help, but he still pulled through because of his resourcefulness. Same situation happened here, he managed to get the better of Wonder Woman (or at least prove a point) by being crafty. So stories like this can work, it's just you have to allow Spider-Man's ingenuity to shine rather than his strength.
@sebastiankrant2738
@sebastiankrant2738 6 жыл бұрын
Sure, but in that case the problem becomes at which point you make the other person an idiot. Because Superman is very smart too. So the difference is rather minor. Sure, Spiderman is an actual genius but at this point there is always the threat of making for example Superman look like an idiot, just so Spiderman can look smart. Of course, this was back in an age where it wasnt that hard with Superman - in never iterations he would probably outsmarted Doom or would at least have been more carefull. But if we for example take Batman - here its no problem that he massivly outshines supes in the intelligence department. Its his entire point and you dont take something away from him. With Spiderman I always feel in stories like that that they would be better as a Spiderman story featuring superman rather than a crossover. This way the dynamicc is a bit odd, because you cant really feel for spiderman beeing the underdog, if you still want to persent a challenge for Superman because any such challenge is in general SO much stronger that Spiderman just has no chance. No matter how much ingenuity, Spiderman will never take on Galactus. So it works much better like here showing Spidermans status as an underdog with stuff like the Hulk. Spiderman having serious trouble and beeing at a massive dissadvantage with an enemy superman just swats away, as you said. The problem however is that its than hard to feel the stakes for superman. This could be solved by having superman not in focus but focussing purely on Spiderman and having Superman as a side character. We dont have to shift our persception of a threat as beeing massive for one but miniscule for the other and use Superman not as a perspective on is own but to add to spidermans perspective at feelin outmatched.

Thing is, that doesnt really work. Sure, with SOME plans it might work. But not with world domination. He is essentialyl declaring war on the rest of the world. If he would just do stuff like damage a city or try to take out individuals, sure, he would be allowed to return and probably had to pay a fee or be sanctioned and be done with it. But he has multiple times conducted actions that were essentially war. Saying he could just say "diplomatic immunity" would be like claiming the Nazi spies in captain americas comics could just have claimed "diplomatic immunity" and be done with it.

1 The movies completly butcher his characters because: 1 they portray him as less smart than richards, while in canon doom is his equal or superior, the whole point of both characters is that the smallest INPLICATION that someone MIGHT be as good as him drives doom insane, and that richards wins against doom because he has his family and doom's alone. 2 they ignore he is the second best magic user in the marvel universe (sometimes as good as doctor strange) hell they want to ignore he knows magic at all, when that is one of the thing that makes doom special above all characters, he masters both science and magic and combines both into something new. 3 he is jobber to the good guys and a punching bag to the F4 in the movies, when in canon the F4 has never defeated doom, doom can easily fight an entire team or the entirity of the marvel heroes in earth by himself, the only adaptation that got this right was the earth mighties heroes animate series.

I get he owes Jonah for giving him his break, but he has admitted time and time again he could make WAY more money working at any other paper or news organization. Unless Jonah has enough pull to blackball Peter from any other media outlet he should have quit decades ago. It feels like one of the biggest examples of, status quo must be maintained even when it makes absolutely no seance what so ever.

I miss big boisterous speeches and grand plans by comic villains. Today's comics want more "normal" and whenever a baddie does do this now it's always followered someone asking "why are you talking like that?" That really bugs me.
@sebastiankrant2738
@sebastiankrant2738 6 жыл бұрын
I think it just doesnt fit with a lot of modern styles anymore. We dont have cheesy bond-villains anymore and while I do like that Bond took that direction as I dont think a Roger-Moore-Bond would work today without coming of as laughable, it of course also meant the end of boisterous speeches. Plus, villains have been defeated by those tons of times. Thats the problem with clischees - sure, in universe some villain giving a speech might be something unique and special but out of it we know the clischee and it is just that - a clischee. This becomes worse in stories that are set in our time - if your villain is an archetypical bond-villain one has to wonder "dont they know archetypical bond vilains in the universe and how that works?". Add to that that over time we started questioning movies a lot more. So archetypical villain behaviour makes the villain look like an idiot. If a villain today would just leave the captives in a deathtrap and walk away for no reason he is stupid. I for one however love the parodies of it.
@wdcain1
@wdcain1 6 жыл бұрын
That's the thing, the bond-villain cliches are still in full force today but their dialogue has completely changed. They're still robbing banks and the usual stuff but now writers have to handle things either tongue in cheek or by pointing out all the usual tropes and pointing out tropes isn't good writing. It's how you use the tropes that's the mark of a good writer.
@sebastiankrant2738
@sebastiankrant2738 6 жыл бұрын
Firstly, I do think that the clischees have been dialed down. Classical death-traps, laser-cutters, big monologues... are only done when it fits the character. And quite frankly, robbing banks has nothing to do with boisterous talking - it would just be ridicolous if someone like Captain Cold would rob a bank and than give some great speech about him. Sure, it would work for parody and fun, but it wouldnt make him an intimidating villain. Also, parody is not about pointing out tropes, but making fun of them in intelligent ways. And its that that makes it good. The thing is, I dont think in the modern age such speeches can work well. If they arent meant in a funny way, they make the villain look like a douchebag with an addiction to express himself. Sure, if thats part of the villain, ok, but that doesnt make him intimidating or scary. If its a serious villain he needs to back up the claims. And in those cases "talk softly and carry a big stick" always works better for intimidating villains. "Darkseid is." in the right context conveys more power and strength than 100 speeches. And this is why I dont think those speeches "went away". Older comics and films (see James Bond for excellent examples) were just far less serious. It was not believed that comics could be serious. As such, over the top villains that exclaimed their names didnt destroy the tension and seriousness of the situation, because the situation wasnt meant to be serious.
@wdcain1
@wdcain1 6 жыл бұрын
But it doesn't feel like the classic form has been dialed down. Rather it's like the style of modern super-hero comics thinks its above the "old" way which it deems an embarrassment. Plus I notice several other things have changed in the writing/drawing of super-hero comics in the last decade (way too many to list here). One of the biggest in terms of plot is how most big name hero comics don't really gel the plots well. A more simpler way of saying this is, we'd see the hero's personality in how they'd handle the villain and stop the crimes they're committing with action and dialogue. Now it's more typical for the super-hero stuff to be very bland, almost a second thought, with the hero's personality being exposed to the reader in regular day to day situations. Marvel is really bad about this right now.

The thing is, aside from WWH, the only instances were the Hulk has gone to a highly populated city by his own will, and not because he was Banner and then transformed in the city, were usually to get people... to help other people. I remember it happened twice with Dr. Strange, with Hulk looking for him to help Namor, and then later Jarella. And also something very telling about the Hulk is that when he enters a city, the only damages provoqued is the shattered concrete beneath his feet... right until a supervillain attacks him, or a scared cop shoots him. That's the thing about the Hulk: if people wasn't scared of him and let him be... he could stroll perfectly through the middle of New York without hurting a fly.
