Batman Begins and Superman Returns should’ve started the DCEU. Both movies were one year apart from each other. Both movies were fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Both movies looked and felt like they could’ve been connected. Superman Returns referenced Gotham City. Not to mention, it grossed more money at the box office than Batman Begins. I Am Legend teased a crossover between them for May 2010. The billboard in Times Square had Christian Bale’s Batman logo and Brandon Routh’s Superman logo merged together.

I rewatched Superman Returns. Really well done. Thought the saving Lois from death in the plane crash sequence was one of the best CGIs I've seen, right down to the crumpling of the plane from the pressure.

Having read the Superman comics as a kid in the 70's, I agree with you. I hated his hair and the suit though. The "S" and the trunks should've been bigger, and he shouldlve had the "S" curl in his hair. Clark Kent's hair should be slicked back, not Superman's.

It's amazing looking back remembering how excited I was to go see this movie in the theater when it was new then to look back now and see how old fashioned everything looks already. Time flies, it's sad, really. Brandon was a great Superman, especially as someone growing up loving Christopher Reeve's Superman. Brandon was a great continuation of that version of Superman and Clark.

The problem with Superman Returns is that it was attempting to do the impossible. You can’t make a Christopher Reeve/Dick Donner Superman movie without Christopher Reeve or Dick Donner. True it attempts to carry substance and something to say. But at the end of the day, it only comes across as a big budget fan film. The original Donner films were iconic, but Bryan Singer’s stubborn desire to have his film be attached to those was a massive mistake. It could have easily been a standalone story that paid homage to the previous movies, but by retconning the timeline and having it be a replacement of 3 and 4, all that’s created is a need for comparison. One that it would always lose. Returns should have been a fresh start, instead it was just more of the same but with new people. The character of Superman deserved more than that. The Reeve movies are classics, but they are not the be all and end all. Comic books offer new interpretations of their characters all the time. Singer didn’t understand that modernised nostalgia was just doing the character dirty. He needed a clean slate, a reboot for a new generation, like what Nolan did with Batman Begins. It’s obvious what Returns was trying to emulate but it even fails as a straight sequel. Singer couldn’t duplicate the heart of the originals, and the new actors performances (especially Lois Lane and Lex Luthor) were so different from their previous portrayals that it’s impossible to take it seriously as part of the older canon. It’s heart is in the right place but it feels like it has no right to exist at all. Man of Steel may have had some naysayers, but it at least did a brilliant job of reinventing the character for a new time. The new versions of Krypton, Lois, Zod, Jor-El and Jonathan were all brilliant reimaginings, the soundtrack was utterly phenomenal, and Cavill’s performance was exactly what the character needed. A more grounded look at a man not of Earth who chooses his adopted home and finally takes his place as it’s greatest protector with an optimism and a smile.

I did like this Superman suit more than the DCEU though the red could have been a little brighter. If Doomsday was in this movie his belt of the containment suit have the Doomsday logo on his belt buckle along with the two Doomsday logos on the heel of the boots and the 4 logos on each soles with some spikes on the soles.

Brandon certainly did a very good job of continuing the legacy of Christopher Reeve when portraying the Man of Steel. Even Dana Reeve and Richard Donner were both impressed by his performance.

Original story: When Kal-El arrived on earth as a baby he was wrapped around in a space blanket. That blanket was made out of a kryptonian material no earthly material could ever destroy. Martha kent created Supermans suit out of that in destructible space blanket. Now you know the reason why Supermans suit never got destroyed or damaged, and when it did it was just as powerfull as Superman himself.

The fabric was the blankets, the boots were the upholstery, the belt was the seat belt, and his glasses were from the window glass from the ship. And he used heat vision to help Ma Kent cut things (just like he shaves using a mirror). And the needle can slip through the fabric knit (like regular sewing does), thread being unwoven from part of the blankets. Old Superboy stories covered it (except the shaving, that was a Superman story, obviously.). Yeah, I remember when comics were 10 cents, and was worried when they went up to a quarter...

This is probably an unpopular opinion but I loved the “Returns” suit. I loved the raised crest, with the spine on the “S”, I loved the subtle geometric designs in the crest as well as the entirety of the blue skin suit which elegantly indicated that this was something more sophisticated and advanced than a flimsy pair of tights. It’s pretty clear to me that Clark was no longer sporting Ma Kent’s homemade number, and had graduated to more befitting and beneficial kryptonian materials with otherworldly properties. This evolution is made pretty obvious in the deleted scene that shows us a Kal who has gone on a journey of self discovery and fully embraced his alien nature. We see him piloting a sunstone ship with a kryptonian star drive, easily operating the neural interface intuitively, skillfully navigating the remains of krypton’s corpse, even accessing the navigational holographic display and charting a course to return to earth all while suffering the effects of immense kryptonite poisoning. During this painful homecoming we see Kal is outfitted in the black kryptonian solar suit for his journey across the cosmos without the constant glow of earths yellow sun. He even appears to slumber in a chamber, bathing in the light of yellow sun lamps for most of the journey. To me this all indicates an overwhelming adoption of the culture and technology of his forebears and makes it pretty apparent that his new suit, while crafted in the image of the earlier Donnerverse costume, is no longer a simple earth garment. Further more, the heavy looking cape, with its sturdy leather like appearance feels suggestive of the indestructible cape of lore, the inclusion of the red briefs is a win for me also, especially with the molded El Credt belt buckle which later appeared in Rebirth and Hoechlin’s newest suit. But the classic blue Boy Scout look will always win out in my opinion. Cavill looks phenomenal without question, but I’ll always prefer the classic crest, bright colors, and red briefs.

I will take Brandon's Superman Returns suit over Caville's Man of Steel suit any day. MOS suit is just a joke in my book in both colors and design. With that being said, my favorite preference will always be the Christopher Reeve's Superman suit over any Superman rendition. Reeve's Superman suit really has that nice color tone/hue/brightness of blue, red, and yellow. In addition, it also has the right size/proportion of the S on the chest and the cool S at the back of the cape in which the newer Superman suit fails to have.

I’ve seen many versions of Superman’s suit, in both the movies and comics. To me, nothing can beat the classic suit, with the trunks. My favorite Superman movie suit is the 1978 Christopher Reeve suit. Everything about it is perfect to me, it’s the most faithful adaptation of a comic costume on film. I like the darker blue used in the Returns suit as well. The DCEU suit looks alien and cool, but in some scenes the blue is almost black. It was better in Justice League, in terms of color, but it looked too shiny and metallic, at times. The best redesign I’ve seen is in the DC Rebirth Comics, (the suit design used after the Superman Reborn arc). It has the bright blues and reds, no stupid collar, the S is the classic logo, the cape has a yellow S on it, it doesn’t look like armor. It’s basically the classic suit, but the trunks have been replaced with a red belt with a diamond buckle. Although I am very excited to see that they are brining back the trunks in Action Comics #1000.

As a kid that grew up with the Reeve films, it was kind of jarring watching this as an adult. Lex really wasn't having too rough a time in prison based on the classic films but apparently he got hard later! Otis must have gotten shanked in the yard at some point. I felt Routh deserved a real shot of being the next Superman and given his own film series rather than some kind of odd, unnecessary continuation of the old Reeve films.

Looking back at the old suit, its weird that the El symbol was so small.
