The weirdest Supes power I ever saw was in one of the episodes of the old 70's Justice League show. I think it was Lex Luther who trapped Supes in a pit, bound with Kryptonite handcuffs. The pit was veeerrrry slowly (because supervillian) filling with water. The idea was that the Kryptonite handcuffs would weaken his ability to hold his breath, and he'd drown like an ordinary human. Supes somehow came up with the idea, which he painstakingly laid out for the viewer, that simultaneously using his frost breath and heat vision on the water would turn into it "Kryptonic Acid", which melted the cuffs from his wrists. How does simultaneous heat and cold turn water into acid? More specifically, KRYPTONIC acid. Also, how was he able to maintain enough control on his powers to use two at once while bound with Kryptonite bands?

Also I think Super Ventriloquism and Hypnotism started out as skills that Superman taught himself, like a human could, but WAY better because he's super.

***** how did he get freeze breath? Never figured that out :p
@DoctorTopper
@DoctorTopper 9 жыл бұрын
The freeze breath is just because his lungs and lips are so strong. He can pressurize air and blow on a lake to freeze it, as easy as you blow on soup to cool it. So technically The Hulk has freeze breath too if he practiced.

Superman's real power is the power to get whatever power he wants, whenever he needs it. He has the power to rewind time when approppriate. He has the power to temporarily overcome green kryptonite, whenever the need arises (to Metallo and Luthor's unending frustration, no doubt). He has the power to go into an elevator as Clark Kent and come out as Superman without anyone wondering why the fuck Clark disappeared in that elevator. Basically, he has the power to do whatever he wants, whenever he wants. The only power he doesn't have, apparently, is the power to defeat Batman, as the latter keeps finding ways to be a bigger threat to Supes in a single comic/episode then Luthor is in his entire career.

I think my favorite continuity is from Superman's first canon death where Project Cadmus gained access to his remains and performed an autopsy. (while stealing DNA to clone him) It was revealed that even after death, Superman had a personal focefield around him. This makes a lot of sense when you think about all the times post-crisis Superman blatantly violates the laws of physics enough to make Newton roll in his grave. How many times have you seen Superman stop a high speed vehicle without any damage to it, carry an object from an axis that it can't support itself from (like carrying a plane by its wing) or lift something so heavy that its sheer mass would cause the ground to buckle under him. Two words: Tacticle Telekinesis. For anyone not familiar with the power, tactile telekinesis is a form of telekinesis where the user can manipulate the environment around them by pure reaction. In most cases, with physical contact as a strict requirement. So in Superman's case, his personal forcefield did all the work for him, but without having to use any mental concentration to perform his feats. Simply having contact with the object he wanted to manipulate would cause his forcefield to extend around it allowing him to lift something with more mass than him without the ground buckling under him, and from an axis that the object could never be able to support itself. Now when you include invulnerability into this concept, it explains how after being shot, stabbed, burned or faced any other hazard that would kill (or worse, liquify) a normal person, Superman could emerge without a scratch, even on his costume. In cases where he did suffer any type of injury or his clothes showed wear and tear, that would mean there's some limitation to this personal forcefield where it would weaken from sustained combat or Superman simply didn't have enough solar energy to maintain the field. This could also explain his vulnerability to magical attacks based on the idea that the forcefield can't do anything against something from the ethereal, astral, or unexplained. (With the exception of Ki since that comes from the the physical body) Flight could be easily explained that his forcefield is basically lifting him, simulating the power of flight... or manipulating something else that I'll cover later. So, with these theories, Superman might not be some form of super humanoid with amazing physical abilities. Instead, Superman might have underdevloped psi powers with yellow sun radiation as a catalyst. Psychokinesis (different from telepathy) is the core psi ability to mentally control matter, even without physical contact, Compared to tactile telekinesis, (which is one of the many abilities in the psi spectrum) psychokinesis requires some form of concentration on what the user wants to manipulate. But as a tradeoff, psychokinesis has more potential, like further control on specific objects, matter, or elements: Telekinesis, the mental control of physical matter, like oneself to lift them or propel them through the air to simulate flying. Since Superman doesn't have anyone to train him in the use of his mental powers, he might not have developed the ability to manipulate other physical matter, might be limited to only lifting himself, or could just be using his forcefield to lift and propel himself. It's really up for debate. Pyrokinesis, or the mental power to manipulate fire, be it controlling flames or even creating heat through line of sight like some kind of "heat vision." Cryokinesis, the ability to control ice in multiple forms like creating arctic wind with a gesture, or in Superman's case, from within to create ice breath. There's also the idea of aerokinesis, the power to generate wind that he also uses to use his breath to generate strong winds. To explain the feats he performed in Superman II, there's photokinesis, the ability to project images or illusions, What can be a bit complicated is mind wiping kiss? Could be simple telepathy, or maybe even chronokinesis, the ability to manipulate time. Telepathy makes more sense, but doesn't exactly fit the psy tree of abilites since telepathy is it's own core mental power. Chronokinesis while a bit more ambiguous might be a better when you think about the idea he didn't just kiss Lois, but took her through time, altering her recollection of anything that transpired during the events of Superman II. When you think about that other WTF scene where he flew around the world to reverse time, preventing Lois' death, chronokinesis makes even more sense. But for continuity sake, let's just assume that it puts exponential amounts of strain on his solar reserves, preventing him from being able to turn back time whenever he so pleased. These are just theories stemming from discussions I've had with Superman fans. I'm not really a Superman fan myself, but more of a general fan of discussing super powers, how they would apply to the real world, necessary secondary powers and the like.

sometimes the reason for his super strength, speed, durability and flight is because of tactile telekinesis and sometimes its because of his density. I like the ones when it just enhances his physical performance cause its more in line with his other powers like super senses and lungs

As an avid Superman fan I have pieced together my hypothesis: Supermans planet is one of the oldest and highly evolved planets in the current universe. It was an extremely hostile environment which spawned extremely hostile lifeforms (see doomsday backstory) the size of the planet being that of a supergiant created extreme gravity, as well as an atmosphere which is bascially so dense it would be a liquid; which led lifeforms to adapt over time and create ways of countering these extreme gravitational effects - flight and a highly dense muscula-skeletal systems for example, but also explains the x-ray vision and heat vision. The energy cost of creating and maintaining life's functions in such an extreme environment also led the lifeforms to be photosynthetic, as well as the plantlife. Also being a far older solar system, the sun was also in its last stage of life, having reached the red supergiant range, the amount of visible light radiation given off was far less, forcing lifeforms to adapt even further, increasing the strength and energy efficiency again. Ultimately this led to lifeforms which on a cellular level were cold-fusion based, adapting their solar absorption ability for a secondary purpose, to trigger the cellular fusion of Adenosine Triphosphate to create energy. News-flash: Superman is fusion powered, not solar powered. his solar absorption only triggers the fusion-cell process. Just like humans have two metabolic systems, a fat burning and a glucose burning metabolism. Kryptonians developed two cell based power systems, a mitochondrial chemical-electrical source and a photo-electrical fusion source.

The good thing about Superman is that, with time, people got a hang with how to deal or write him. In recent years, writers have written stories where they not only challenge his morals and mind, but actually give him physical challenges that make sense. In the New 52, they've thrown in all kinds of aliens, monsters and robots to make sure he's always fighting someone at his level, and it's awesome: Xa-Du, Zod, Faora, Helspont, Doomsday, Mongul, MORE Kryptonians, and sometimes Darkseid or actually have people on Earth create shit to harm or stop Superman. Writers just now know better and it's why it's so great to get into Superman stories now. There were good ones before the New 52, but it seems like writers are more aware of what readers wanna read about compared to before.

***** That's a reasonable question. On a planet of seven billion people, how can some of us not lookalike? In fact, there are only a limited number of facial characteristics that are possible and when these several hundred characteristics are randomly distributed among several billion people, it is virtually certain statistically that some unrelated individuals will end up with many of the same facial characteristics. Factoring diet, geographical location and atmospheric conditions into the equations and it is possible I just look like the guy.

Wasn't there a story about Superman's powers are actually manifestations of the power of his mind? WINZ0W I think that's how Superboy's powers work. His body puts out some psychic field that basically fakes most of Superman's powers. Instead of actually being indestructible the field just stops him from being hit as hard essentially. I remember that also being the explanation for why him and Supe's costumes only get torn when they're tired out. The field basically covers their costume.

Since I add trivia, here's some about his powers. The George Reeves' show had two winners : the ability to hypnotize someone so they can float and walk up a sheer wall (Yeah, George had some face-palm moments that some say may have led to his possible tragic choice) and the ability to split into two different Supermen, albeit weakened, when he needed to be in two places at once--thank God the comics had the robot doubles--and Batman--and JFK. Not kidding, JFK once posed as Clark Kent to save him from snoopy Lois, and the week the comic was published, guess what happened? It gets even weirder with Clark and Jack, but I digress. But one power-related thing that was apparently never pursued used to get brought up in letter columns in the 70's and early 80's, was a white sun. The fans would write in, what would happen if Supes went under a white star's even more intense rays. The answer seemed to be from the editors that Earth Humans like Jimmy, Lois, et al, would become like Superman, and Supes himself would be as far above his normal levels as those are above normal Humans. They seemed to indicate they wanted actually make this a story, but considering it was still being mentioned in the early 80's, my guess is plans for Crisis OIE dashed these plans, and subsequent reboots have put it aside basically forever. I also suspect two problems : How do you make Superman believably even more crazy powerful, and if this were done once, how often would it be done again, sometimes with less caution? But I think in the main, the first Crisis killed both that and Roy Thomas' reported plans to once and for all establish just why the Supermen of Earth-1 and Earth-2 were so vulnerable to magic. Nowadays, I think they stick with the Byrne/Wolfman notion that he's simply no less vulnerable to magic than anyone else. One last one, again tangential : In the 40's radio show with Bud Collyer as Superman/Clark, his vessel took much longer to get here, and he arrived on Earth as a fully powered grown man who also knew how to use them. No foster parents - a kid and his father he helped suggested a secret identity. Oh, and I think in the comics, Supes was one of the first to time-travel as an intangible phantom, only able to observe the past, when he traced the first-ever piece of Kryptonite in the comics and also learned his own origin for the first time.

***** I'd almost like to agree with Jackson Crowe here, mostly because Superman has become all too powerful. He has so many powers and abilities that it's not normal for him to be able to act as human as he does (if we stick to certain story lines). If some of these off-shoot powers were the results of his other powers (I'm with you on the super strength = super jump/speed ... unless the strength aspect only affects his fast twitch (power-oriented) muscles, and not the slow twitch (endurance-oriented) muscles (there are MANY other physiological factors that could influence his abilities). But you get my point...), off shoot powers like the Flash's ability to change his voice by vibrating his vocal cords, heat vision as a side effect of x-ray vision, etc. Superman is literally a god at this point, and there would be no Batman vs Superman debate; it would just be how long could Batman last? /rant

There is a point of diminishing returns across which gains in muscular size/strength negatively impact speed. Also, strength does not increase muscular density enough to cause invulnerability. I saw a video clip on here, Superman vs a crew of super criminals lead by some British guy with kinetic powers. One guy was a black man capable of blasting someone with energy(he hit Supes with the force of 15 suns, right in his face). Then there was a succubus-type woman who he tranqed(seemingly to a near-death coma), after they thought the 15-suns black killed him, all taking place on the moon. Supes, after the blast, generated(with his mind, mind you), a hurricane of 300mph winds(maybe 300mpm, point is it was wind faster than any earthly wind), and he did a little trash-talking to them...telepathically...so that EVERYBODY watching could hear. An Asian magician tried tapping Supe's weakness to magic, but his throat was pinched psychically before being sucked into the winds. Scared, the Brit and his black friend teleported to Metropolis, thinking the people around would hamper him. In the blink of an eye, Supes spirited the black guy away, and made the Brit think that he, along with the rest of his crew, were all dead. Enraged, he tried to destroy this "new, killer" Superman. Supes, after letting him wear himself down, used his vision to surgically sever the part of the Brit's brain that gave him his powers, doing so through the Brit's eye. In the last moment of the Brit's consciousness, before getting knocked out, Supes made him think this "new" Superman, was a killer of those criminals that were no longer thought of as human. Turns out, it was all a massive mindjob on them. And someone said the real kicker; those psychic and kinetic powers Supes used, were cannon.

Good day! I remember reading in a pre-crisis Superman Comic book, when he went to a place in space with a violet (or was it velvet ) sun, he got a new power. He was able to create matter with his thoughts. (he didn't stay long in that place because he said he doesn't know what effect the sun would have on him. He was traveling via Boom Tube or Worm hole. I really am not sure with the details.) There was a part in the story, when He was going take the bus, he had no change, but he was able to make a coin materialize in his pocket. I'm sure I'm not totally accurate. I read the old comic book in the mid 90's from a friend. Can you confirm this? Thanks! :)

In Superman 2, I attributed the strange powers he had in his fortress of solitude, (note that he only used these powers inside the fortress) like holographs, and the "S", to the fortress itself. The fortress has technology that created the holograms for superman, the S was a holograph too, Anan was just stupid for falling for it. Hey Scott, what I never really understood is how Superman learned to fly. I find the comics are very inconsistent concerning his ability to fly. Ok it must have evolved out of his ability to jump very high and far and there is a version where he gets a ring from the legion of superheroes, but I´m just not sure about it and I only read some Superman-graphic-novels (including Birthright of course) also I´m following the ongoing series. So, what I really wanna know is, if there ever was an explanation for how the process of flying works, (and why doesnt he need the fly-ring later on?). (probably you have already uploaded a video about this topic) ... Greetings from Frankfurt Ger. Your show is awesome!

actually this is the thing that has always got me about his powers -if there is no sun or moon light he has no energy and his powers basicly rundown as he uses them -or he suddenly is rendered power less -but either way this is a massive obvious weakness no one bothers to exploit -all you have to do to beat superman is basicly run him dry-find a way to temporally remove the sunlight from the equation and then set off enough distractions so that superman won't notice till he uses up most of his energy -ie do it at night make it so the solar energy he uses is cut off and cause massive and numerous continues disasters that make him rush to the rescue until he runs dry.

Sometimes they say Superman always holds back and that's why he doesn't beat Brainiac with one punch. What if Superman's strongest power is his flight? So even if Superman can push the moon by flying, his punching strength isn't exactly as hard.

(WARNING- minimal to no experience with the comics. All the information is secondhand at best and most of the stuff is just hypothesis that are typed as they are thought up.) Well, here's an idea: Kryptonite is what makes Superman super. Or, to be more clear, the LACK of Kryptonite makes Superman super. Originally, when they had the green Kryptonite introduced, the stuff didn't kill superman. However, what it DID do was bring him down to human, essentially robbing him of his powers. And his race lives on a planet made of the stuff. Or just on a planet with large quantities of the stuff. I never did find out how much Kryptonite Krypton had or if it went through a special process before it became Instant Superman stopper in a rock. In any case, perhaps whatever properties Kryptonite has is actually inhibitive to life in certain ways, and thus whatever lived near vast quantities of it would have to adapt to either no-sell it or simply be strong enough that the radiation no longer inhibited it. The latter, in this case, would explain Superman's physiology and why his body grows to be absurdly strong. These superpowers may not be a result of just a yellow sun and different physiology, but also the fact that the biggest thing that Kryptonian bodies have to withstand constantly for their entire lifetime is suddenly just GONE. It'd be like living your whole life with enormous, heavy weights strapped to your body only to one day have them slide right off. In a sense, Superman could be weaker than an average Kryptonian visitor to Earth back when Krypton was in its prime. That's a thought. As for why this doesn't effect humans noticeably... well, maybe it's our superpower. I mean, aliens have what are considered superpowers, even though it is common facts of life for them. Maybe no-selling the more esoteric super-radiations was the human superpower, but because they are never regularly exposed to them, it never occurred to them. As for /why/, that'd be a different story. It would make for a cool plot point, though, for some arc. Then again, it's more likely that whatever makes Superman's biology so ridiculous just so happens to be weak to that radiation due to how the gene sequences form and what their chemical makeup is. Oh well. Better luck next time, humans. At least you have Batman.

Ok, so, I'm a First time poster----- only found this page like, today, as in a few minutes ago; Great work, by the way, one Proud Geek to another ---- but a big comic fan and student, with a working knowledge of most things Superman. I know this is like, two years late now, so doesn't matter anymore, but i'm going to give *my* answer on this. Believe it or not, this is something I've given some significant thought to...and, brazen as it may be, I think both the Post-and Pre-Crisis reasonings are actually...not _wrong_, but _lacking in correctness,_ a bit. I just *never* bought that he gets "all" his powers from the yellow sun, full stop. There HAS to be more to it! Hear me out, despite me about to MAJORLY Geek-Out on you here. Why does Superman have powers? You touched on the 2 big reasons everyone knows about: *1]* The Gravity *2]* Earth's Yellow sun. I postulate that there is a third reason, which essentially goes back to his Kryptonian physiognomy, not just his cell structure. In a 2000 reprint Millennium edition of *Superman #1*, *1939* , it reads that Clark's main powers, as evidenced on one 8-panel page are that he could, and I quote " _Hurdle sky scrapers, Leap an 8th of a mile, run faster than a streamline train and nothing less than a bursting shell could penetrate his skin!_ " In later pages in this same book, a page offers _"Scientific Explanation for Superman's Amazing Strength--!"_ saying that: 1. _"Superman came to earth from KRYPTON, whose inhabitants had evolved, after millions of years, to physical perfection!"_ 2. _"The smaller size of our planet, with its slighter gravity pull, assists Superman's tremendous muscles in the performance of miraculous feats of strength!"_ 3. _"Even upon our world Today exist creatures possessing SUPER STRENGTH! The lowly ant can support weights hundreds of times its own. The grasshopper leaps what to a man would be the space of several city blocks!"_ 4. _"It is not too far-fetched to predict tat some day, our very own planet may be peopled entirely by SUPERMEN!"_ A story in said same reprint goes on to elaborate at other points of his different structure and indestructibility. An accident occurs in a mine shaft, where "poison gas" is released. Superman enters in freely, _"his physical structure unaffected by the gas"_... This hints that his muscles, nerves and cells on a whole are so far advanced they are highly resistant, if not invulnerable to toxic fumes as well as terrific physical force. A written portion in this same book, penned by Jerry Siegel, recounts: ".... _with amazing rapidity, he stripped off his glasses and outer garments, revealing himself clad in a close fitting costume and flaring cape. In this apparel, it was apparent that he really possessed a fine physique of breathtaking symmetry. One lithe leap brought him to the window sill. There, he poised momentarily while his keen telescopic vision surveyed the vicinity_ ..." So apparently, the Pre-Crisis account of near physical "perfection" accounted for super strong senses, as well [telescopic, if not microscopic & x-ray vision, at least]. This goes to what i consider the 3rd, base source of at least a portion Superman's powers *3]* Highly advanced Kyrptonian physiology, that is, in some ways, deeply different from humans. Oh, it maybe _humanoid_, yes, but not completely human in any way. The elements I would account for in a Kryptonian body which grant Superman more abilities are *1.* A more evolved form of muscle cells and tissues, combining both slow-twitch AND fast-twitch properties. These "pink muscles" would allow Superman to produce a greater amount of force, _without tiring_ , for far longer periods. They would also probably have a naturally higher number of mitochondria, which would produce greater contraction ratings in each fiber. In other words, if there was *no yellow sun and equal gravity,* and Superman was placed against an earthling of equal size, height, weight and mass, his muscles would _still_ work, on average, 10-20 times _better_ and longer, making him an average of possibly 20 times stronger. *2.* A cell structure that more efficiently copies itself, allowing the cells to flush toxins, renew themselves and make perfect clone cells without [or at least with a highly retarded rate of] degradation. This would mean _every cell in his body,_ even _without_ a yellow sun, produces less waste chemicals from break down, and more quickly reproduces/regenerates itself from damage. This would essentially give Superman a "healing factor" or sorts, as he would not easily sustain major cellular damage. He would also, consequently, age more slowly. *3.* A corded muscle structure. Most human muscle is smooth & flat; I'm guessing Kryptonians have muscles which work like braided ropes or chains, meaning the fibers are entwined. This would naturally make them stronger and more durable, physically. *4.* Adaptive antibodies in his immune system. Superman's immune system would _need_ to be more evolved to be able to "resists poisons" as he does, or at least allow his structure to adapt to said poisons better than ours do. *5.* All of these advantages must likely stem from some advanced chromosomes in Krptonian cells that we humans just don't have. So even on a chromosomal level, where new genes are created, Superman's body has an edge after thousands more years of evolution. These chromosomes would also account for the organelles in his cell structure which absorb and store solar radiation, allowing for the photo- voltaic affect which allows him to produce even MORE power. Chromosomal differences would also easily explain why superman imply _can't_ have a child with an earth woman; we're vastly different, even at the genetic level. *6.* Writer *S. Elliot Maggin* wrote about the _"Photo-nucleic Effect"_ , which tried to explain the DIRECT effect the yellow sun has on Superman's body on a cosmological level, beyond him being a mere "solar capacitor". This too might be an element. You can look it up. *7.* More advanced neuro-synaptic structure, which accounts for Superman's greater memory, senses, and faster nervous system, while also attributing in part to his strength and speed. Logically, his nerves would _need_ to fire faster to power more evolved muscle tissue at a greater rate. This likely also means that Superman largely perceives everything around him in "slower motion" than most humans, and, without the sun, he would likely still be capable of moving & thinking between 40 - 90 times _faster_ than an average person *8.* Greater abundance of stem cells, which would also mean greater developed sensory cells. Where as a human has 2 million odor sensitive cells in his nose, Superman might have 20-10 times more, for instance; same thing for his sense of sight, taste, touch....even some senses we might not know about. This would explain his vision, even for him being able to see in the entire spectrum; many earth animals already see outside visible light. *9.* Actual development of the brain which can allow for sionic abilities, such as telepathy, eidetic memory, and limited telekinesis. This telekinesis would need to be amplified by energy from the yellow sun, else only done via extreme concentration. This would account for Superman's ability to fly under a yellow sun; the only other option is some form of graviton manipulation via some new organ. The mental powers of telepathy or "thought projection" would also explain his "random" powers in the Fortress of Solitude in *Superman II*; they were all mental projections, which he had better control of in the Fortress via its technology; the holograms were actually "psychic copies", and the "Giant S" was just him projecting a defensive thought "shield" against Nom. It's not far fetched; in the movies, Jor El was essentially a mental imprint kept in a Kryptonian crystal computer. And we know that _it's possible_ to program a computer based on the algorithms of the human brain. An advance civilization tens of thousands of years ahead of ours which has harnessed telepathy and thought projection may have found a way to copy those thoughts as energy patterns, and store them in crystalline capacitors. All of these would be latent abilities ANY Kryptonian would have on their planet, just on comparatively LOWER levels; this would, largely, be the result of _that_ planet's gravity, environment, atmosphere and cosmology....as well as perhaps a comparatively quicker rate of their race's evolution weeding out many of their weaknesses. So, on a super-giant world like Kyrpton, which could easily be 50 times earth's size or more, and theoretically made of even heavier materials.... these abilities are fairly common. While "super", yes, they are by no means _God Like_ due to the planet itself "limiting" their ability, and the lack of a super-empowering Yellow sun. If on the other hand, they _had_ a yellow sun on Krypton, they _would_ be super energized, but perhaps still affected by the gravity & environment of the world, making them....mmmm, perhaps 1/3 - 1/10 as strong as Superman in an Earth environment is. On Earth proper, however, under "0.03 standard Kryptonian Gravity" *[Superman: Birthright #1 2002]*, and with the cellular enhancing power of the yellow sun _multiplying_ this increase by a factor of anywhere from 100 to 100,000, its not inconceivable that his latent abilities would ALSO be enhanced to such levels, making him be able to move continents with ease, think at speeds faster than light, and counteract our gravity completely by telekinetically "propelling" himself through space. Anyway, all of this is just my own theorizing, cobbled together from various sources and scientific conjecture. superman's powers have been handled by greater minds than my own on many occasions. So...what do you think?
@remmy100

Superman isn't physically strong. Despite having a more advanced/efficient physiology he's actually only as strong as a normal human who engages in regular physical training. The more plausible explanation for his powers is that he's an uber psychic. He creates this supercharged bioelectric aura that acts as a base for nearly all his powers. Don't remember where exactly i read this but you can probably find it somewhere. It explains how something as small as superman can lift massive objects without said objects crumbling from its own weight. You can't lift a bridge without it folding around you and falling apart, so how does he do it? He "extends" his aura around the object he is in contact with allowing him to keep it together. It's theorized that this aura somehow, depending on how much he's concentrating, lessens the weight of the object. The more massive it is, the more effort/focus he uses to lift it while keeping it from falling apart.

remmy100 You're fusing two SEPARATE powers here, friend: 1] His "bio electric aura" which was used to justify his near invulnerability, and 2] His "Tactile Telekinesis" , which didn't "lessen" the weight of objects, but did keep them more tightly under his control. Both of these powers were elements of the John Byrne Era superman tales. After the 1987 reboot, Byrne significantly cut superman's"god Like' powers, supposedly to make threats which could credible tax the man of steel. To that end, Kyrpton moved from its Pre-Crisis incarnation of a "super Giant World with Heavier gravity" and more and "millions of years more evolved humanoids" to a planet that was only about 2.5 times larger than earth, significantly younger and waaay less..relatable to any culture of earth. The upshots of these changes were: 1] Superman's gravity based strength was now completely eliminated, along with his more evolved muscles, brain, memory, and naturally enhanced senses. 2]Essentially, ALL his powers now came from the earth's yellow sun. This explanation had a major flaw: if Superman was no longer highly invulnerable due to a higher density molecular structure, just how did HE resist injury, let alone his costumes? So Byrne came up with the "bio electric aura" which essentially acts as a personal force field and extends about 6 inches away from his skin, protecting him and anything he happens to be holding close. The tactile TK was a "latent" ability he used unconsciously to better adjust to objects around him. It was also supposed to supply an explanation for his flight. It did NOT, however, give him "added muscle strength", as you suggest. Thing is, by the mid-90s, especially after the Doomsday death, most of Byrne's changes began to wear thin, and Superman;'s power levels began to creep back up as his adventures became bigger and meaner; this is also why they eventually had Superman become some type of twin Red/Blue energy being, at one point. By 2002, with the release of Superman :Birthright, a retooling of the original origin with SOME of Byrne's concepts was done, but Krypton was, once again, a super-large world with a gravity that was stated IN STORY to be many 1000s of times greater than earth; Lex Luthor even theorized that, due to that gravity, Kryptonians had developed a natural type of anti-gravity organ near the brain which adjusted them to its environment and would, on Earth, enable flight. After that point, the "heavier gravity", which would allow for humans AND materials which are just naturally more durable, essentially became canon. But it really depends on the writer handling the story, I guess.

It usually does lol. All I have is that i never stated he was physically strong. I didn't want to call it tactile telekinesis because I wasn't sure it that specific term was superboy dedicated.

remmy100 Fair enough, Bro. You had a good point; telekinesis IS a psychic power. But its NOT the source of superman's PHYSICAL strength, even in the John Byrne stories. Essentially, his body simply stores, processes, and releases solar energy several thousands, if not millions of times better than an average human. This would indicate that his muscles tensile strength and contraction rate is also multiplied by that same factor. WHERE he stores this energy, however, is a mystery; its theorized that their are special organelles in Kryptonian cells which do ths. Oddly enough, in the Tower of Babel story line, Supes was hit with an artificial variant of Red Kryptonite which turned his skin translucent,....meaning he was absorbing solar radiation DIRECTLY into his organs and other tissues.This was unusually painful for him, because superman was then CRIPPLED by his own overloading power; apparently then, this would indicate that its not just his muscles, but every single cell in his body which ends up storing and using solar energy. His skin then, it would seem, acts as some type of filter and power regulator, much the way OUR skin regulates our body temperature. What made this kick as was that, during this time, all of superman's abilities were amped to a level of 20 or above; he could "hear a flee walking on a dog in New jersey" from the JLA base on the moon, and a literal 2 second blast of heat vision WIPED OUT a 12 story tower, and was so powerful his boots started to melt. I shit you not, this is ALL in the comic. Oh, and as a bonus: this version of Red Kryptonite was formulated by Batman, and stolen by Ras Al'Ghul. Basically, Ras stole ALL of Bats plans for neutralizing the JLA, and used it against them. Yeah... go read this book.

Shenruss This along with your lower comments sounds like they would be coming directly out of my thoughts. I wish they would write him this way instead of blaming it all on solar rays. I think its jsut easier for them to have a go to explanation rather then piece it together from (Yellow sun/Advanced physiology/from a species created or accustomed to a super giant planet as a home)

You know I find it annoying when people use the word Powers, instead of Abilities since being able to run fast is an ability, as he's able to move at that speed. Same can be said for his other traits.

In the 1950s, it was explicitly shown in one story that Superman did in fact project x-rays from his eyes. A tuberculosis screening was being done for school children but the X-Ray machine had broken down. Superman helped the public health officials by projecting a weak beam of x-rays through each kid's chest so that an image could be recorded on standard x-ray film.

I have an answer to the trivia question. The purpose of the glasses was to function as both social invisibility and birth control. Upon seeing the wearer of the glasses women would become enamored with everyone not wearing the glasses. I have a follow up question about super mans powers. Apparently he has been killed in one shape or another a few times. The loop hole writers use to bring him back is that (Cryptonians?) go into a “heeling coma” or something like that until they can just get up and walk away. With that in mind, Crypton exploded with almost all of the debris falling to the planet earth. (not even vaporized..) Why is outer space in the DC universe not filled with millions of Cryptonians in a healing coma? If so much of the debris from Crypton went straight to earth, some of the inhabitants would too I think. In the movie: If their super strength is based on the higher gravity of Crypton and they obviously have artificial gravity on their space ships, why wasn’t Lowis reduced to a delicious soup when she was thrown haphazardly on their ship? If their ships have an artificial gravity equal to that of earth (what a coincidence.) their muscles would atrophy.

Speaking of misconceptions, Earths sun isn't even yellow: it's white; hence why the the famous image shows a rainbow refracting out of white light. A red-sun is possible because red-giants actually have less energy, meaning Earths sun would actually be giving Superman more energy, but technically, that sun is not yellow.
