I love this movie but I've always been frustrated by the time-travel trick, which makes no sense to me.
So I re-edited the ending this way. Sad to lose Christopher's awesome scream, but at the same time, he doesn't get to tell Jor-El to f*** off and choose his girlfriend over his Krytonian education (keeping that for Superman II).
I've also cut my own version of Superman II : here are extracts from my "Ultimate Cut" that show how I got rid of the turning back time again, the super-kiss and managed to make Superman Returns canon.
Superman II Ultimate Cut - Fix 1 - The Introduction
• Superman II Ultimate C...
Superman II Ultimate Cut - Fix 2 - Memory Loss
• Superman II Ultimate C...
Superman II Ultimate Cut - Fix 3 - The Aftermath
• Superman II Ultimate C...
There are other changes of course but I can't upload the entire movie without getting in trouble with Warner Bros. Hope you enjoy !

The turning back time in Part 1 was a stroke of genius. It made Superman The Movie more deeper then just an ordinary, mundane Superhero Movie. Superman with all his power could save the whole world but could not save the woman that he loved most and care for. The first time in his human existence he was just beginning to understand the meaning of love and she died before he could get to her in time. The scene was gut wrenching. Superman holding Lois Lane’s lifeless body as he wept uncontrollably. Death is the end of life for it is no more but for Superman, The Man of Steel, reversing time is possible. Defying his Father’s order that he was forbidden to interfere in human events, Superman flew into outer space and reverse time just long enough to save Lois Lane before the earthquake buried her alive. The joy in his face when he saw her alive standing before him was beautiful. Superman turning back time in part 2, Richard Donner’s cut was just ridiculous. After Superman defeated the three villains and he took Lois Lane home, they barely talked and he flew away. The next day at The Daily Planet, Lois Lane was very distraught because of the terrible events that happened the day before with the 3 villains. They almost destroyed the earth and killed her in the process. Clark Kent walked into the office and greeted her as Clark Kent and not as Superman pretending to be Clark. Lois decided to pour her heart out to him by telling him that she was very selfish when it comes to Superman. She feels like she’s married to a doctor and that speech crap how they leave in the middle of the night. Superman then realized that he has a responsibility and it's bigger than just Lois Lane. Superman flew into outer space and reverse time which meant that the missile in part 1 never struck the Phantom Zone which released General Zod and his minions. If Superman 1 and 2 had been released back to back at the same time it might had worked but it wasn't. What is the point of sitting through the entire movie and watch Superman reversing time to before the missile strike? it's like the entire events didn't happened basically The Donner’s cut erased the entire movie. At least in the Richard Lester's version, Superman gave Lois Lane a kiss and wiped out her memory of the terrible events with her and him but the Hydrogen Bomb that Superman threw into outer space which cracked open the Phantom Zone and freed the 3 Villains happened. The destruction that they caused on The Moon and on The Earth was real as well. Superman getting revenge on the bad guy at the Diner was icing on the cake because everything did happened.

Richard Donner envisioned Superman as one huge movie in two parts. Superman was originally scripted to end with Superman saving Lois and Jimmy and rescuing Miss Teschmacher from a trap Luthor puts her in for her betrayal. After Superman drops off Luthor and Otis in prison we were supposed to see the rocket he hurled in to space freeing the Phantom Zone villains. The Adventure Continues In Superman 2... The turning back time was supposed to be the ending for Superman 2. The original scripted ending explains why everyone remembers that Luthor tried to destroy parts of America in Superman 2. The original script for Superman 2 had the Superman/Phantom Zone villains battling all over the world causing lots of destruction. Superman turns back time to fix everything which also causes Lois to forget he is Clark Kent. The Salikinds thought that Superman would not make money, so they demanded a rescripted ending that had Lois dying and Superman turning back time to save her as an end to the movie without leaving it open for a sequel. To the Salikinds' surprise Superman was a huge hit, so they greenlit Superman 2 . Donner filmed Superman and Superman 2 at the same time. Most of what he filmed, before he was fired, is in his Director's Cut of 2 and some of it is in the theatrical cut.

The turning back time sequence was supposed to happen in Superman 2. That's how Superman was supposed to had fixed all the damage General Zod and Co. had caused. When they put it in the ending of Superman 1 they reworked the script and had Zod, Ursa and Non die at the fortress of solitude and Superman give Lois Lane the infamous "memory wiping kiss".

Superman (1978) The film is an extremely entertaining account of the origin of the famous comic book character. Opening on Krypton, the film follows the individual who considers himself above human possibility, a man of extraordinary faculties, as he is sent to Earth, where he develops his alter ego Clark Kent and is raised by a Midwestern family. In no time, the film has run through his teenage years, and Clark lands a job at the Daily Planet, where he is a reporter. There he falls in love with Lois Lane, who is already in love with a superman. But the love story is quickly sidetracked once villain Lex Luthor launches a diabolical plan to conquer the world and kill a superman.

During its production, I knew someone who freelanced for DC. He told me that during a pre-production meeting, the producers were picking the brains of the staff, doing their homework for background on Superman. There was no script yet, just doing research from the source of people actually working on the character. One of the off-handed things the DC writers were stressing to the producers is that Superman shouldn't turn back time. At the time they were trying to get away from all those kooky "imaginary stories" and be more realistic. And, as the writers said, the stakes in a story vanish if he can just constantly turn back the clock. So, the producers took it as a GREAT suggestion!

I completely agree with your edit because turning back time doesn't work like that. Making the Earth spin the opposite way does not make time go back. Physics just doesn't work that way. Even Superman travelling at near light speed around the Earth isn't going to create a vortex that would affect time. So, your ending - mirroring the ending of the original script - is far more sensible.

The only thing that doesn’t work is Superman’s sigh of relief has no context. But I also imagine it’d be tough to cut around it. That being said, i was wondering if this whole reversing earth ending could be removed and i must say i am pleasantly surprised. You did a great job. I would like to see both Donner versions edited together into one 5 hr film with him reversing the earth once, as intended, at the end of S2. It works much better in S2. Great job. You should try adding in the scene of Zod screaming "FREE" in place of the earth reversal. That would give us the original cliffhanger ending.

I'm quite sure this is the anding of the first Superman movie. After Supe turned back time he did these things to prevent the desaster from happening. I've seen this movie for the first time about 35 years ago. So, no, this not "without turning back time" but "after Superman turned back time already". Edit: I wrote "anding" on purpose. In a later movie they used the idea of Superman correcting the course of rockets for a plot of Lex, where he stole a hair of Superman, attached it to a rocket and let Supe direct it into a sun, creating the Nuclear Man (portrayed by Dolph Lundgrin). "anding" was not a typo.

I understand that going against Jor-el training and rules was a wrong thing for him to do and Superman wouldn't risk the planet's life for Lois...well...lol, he would. But the thing is that he would do that for anyone he loved. He would have done for his father, had he known he could do that earlier, for his mother and of course...for Lois. He actually does that in Smallville. We may argue that in Smallville he was still a boy, learning and here is full grown, already Superman, but he wasn't Superman for a long time, and he hadn't done something stupid and had to deal with the consequences of it till that time. He probably had to do a lot of those to understand time and reality as a whole. Althought he wasn't from Earth, he had grown up here and was human as far as his emotions and reactions go. Maybe it wasn't the most Superman thing for him to do and i agree that i don't think he should have done it, but as Clark and as someone who had experienced lost before, it humanized him a little, we all understand his feelings when he did it, we all wished we could do that, especially if you lost someone. I don't normally like to humanize Superman, i like the fact that he always does the right thing, it doesn't matter the circunstances but i understand this. It also shows the audience how much he just wants to save everyone, he couldnt accept he wasn't fast enough that time and that in fact gives a deeper meaning to it in the long run for his legend, all of that doesn't let me hate the scene. PS:I really love Lois, i'm glad she didn't die.

In thinking about this, the reasons the "going back in time" thing bugs me here is that it was specifically forbidden by his father. I don't like that the only way to save Lois was to ignore his father's wishes. Secondly, if he went back just a bit further, he could have stopped Lex from launching the missiles in the first place. Yea I know - arguing about time travel is silly stuff. But I think it works better when it's part of the plot (i.e., ST First Contact, Terminator, etc.). It seemed like an unnecessary add-on here.

@@Pauley_in_GP I believe the purpose of him betraying his father was to convey the magnitude of his feelings for Lois...My problem isn't with that, but rather the character of Lois and her relationship with Superman, as developed in the film, seemed little more than a childish crush, and not worthy of such devotion on his part. But there are limitations, because of the 2 hour framework of films in general, so you just go with it because it's all entertaining and not that important.

I stand corrected-it wasn’t the missile that freed the Villains from the Phantom Zone in Superman Part 2, it was the hydrogen bomb.

if Lois wasn't suppose to die in that scene then why did they film it? I still don't understand the whole first movie second movie connection there. I guess Ill have to read Donner's original script
