I was once booked into a hotel in Belgrade where the snooty receptionist suggested that I had confused their hotel with a hostel of the same name just around the corner. As late as the 1950's,, just before the advent of the civil rights movement, many hotels and resorts had "restricted clientele" policies that barred Jewish-Americans, Asian-Americans, and African-Americans as guests. Even though this was long before the internet, it often happened prospective guests would make reservations months in advance then be told b.s. the hotel or resort still did not have their reservation! Just like in the movie starring Gregory Peck and Dean Stockwell "Gentlemen's Agreement".

I walked into a local Toyota dealership unshaven, and wearing sweatpants, crocs, a t-shirt, a jacket and a ball cap. The staff was absolutely courteous and helpful. In no way did they demean me because of how I looked. I bought my new 2024 hybrid Sienna from them that day outright, without financing. The way I look or dress is no indication of my wealth.
