I was a retail manager at a major sporting goods chain. I got so sick of dealing with young people drama that I stopped trying to develop them and started hiring the most experienced candidates. Over time, I ended up hiring a bunch of retirees who wanted to work there for the discount. Those creaky old guys and gals not only out worked all the people who were in their 20's and 30's but my store started setting all kinds of kpi performance records. I didn't have to constantly monitor them. I could tell them what I needed, and they would figure it out. I had a team of 65 associates, and by the time I left, the average age of my team was just under 50. It was the best team I ever had the pleasure of leading.

Federal law prevents employers from discriminating against the elderly in hiring. This protection applies to people over 40 years of age. Whether you are 41 years old or 70, for all practical purposes, you are treated the same. In other words, you are considered elderly. And as long as the employer hires a few people in their 40's, it is difficult to show age discrimination.

The only problem I have with Undercover Boss is that if this is the first time that people are seeing the face of a CEO, that is your first problem. I’ve been in organizations where I never seen the CEO once after years of employment, and other organizations where I saw and/or heard from the CEO no less than several times monthly. I can tell you that the cultural differences between such organizations is night and day in favor of the visible CEO’s.

It's hard to prove, whether they say it out loud or not, but if it hasn't been said out loud then they have a lot of other reasons they could gin up. It’s actually true that some places are more likely to hire a younger inexperienced person over an older experienced person. I watched a tv program (I think it was 20/20) years ago where they secretly taped interviews and younger people were hired over older ones. There is age discrimination at many places.

I have advocated for a tv show doing this in reality. HR people I believe would not hire their own bosses and if the resume hid actual company names with equivalent details I think it would truly be enlightening. I was asked recently what my last 2 years showed how I could do a job that I sent a lifetime doing. Amazing the lack of training HR people have

So true! I work in HR for fortune 100 Company & have more experience than anyone in my office. Yet they’d rather hire from outside the company or make a lateral promotion for someone with no actual HR experience. They launched a Customer Satisfaction Survey which is being increasingly used as a performance tool. It is wrought with validity issues & application errors, yet despite feedback, they march forward without a care. The data is skewed due to employees manipulating their work to obtain positive feedbacks.
