This episode it an early glimpse into the brothers relationship. While they do always fight for one another and have a crazy close bond, I have always felt that Dean fights a little harder for Sam and that Sam is a little resentful towards Dean. Also you guys aren't wrong in saying Dean is a daddy's boy but I would say he is definitely a momma's boy as well which become more clear as the show goes on.

Normally how the lore is with the supernatural. If you believe in spirits , if someone dies a horrible death or is tortured their soul remains instead of moving on. There is a thing about batteries being drained by angry spirits. They draw on them for energy to manifest well enough to be seen. It isn't the batteries just going bad, they are being drained. Also, these side shows are to help to express the relationship between these two boys as they carry on. Think of them as character development and watch their interactions through these side episodes. Remember this is about brothers who deal with the supernatural as a family business kind of thing. Sometimes the monster of the week can overpower their brotherly interactions but it is why they are running together for the show in the first place.
