*Rating 10/10 - I did it guys, full marks - I barely survived this episode...So much to take in as per every finale! I'm extremely cautious going into season 5 with regards to Sam & Dean's relationships. I pray that they'll grow stronger after this whole ordeal. Sam will be punishing himself no doubt after everything that's happened with Ruby, the demon blood, Lilith & his arguments with Dean. Maybe Lucifer Rising will force the boys to crack on & focus on getting things back under control? I hope!! So so happy that Cas decided to work with Dean rather than against him, I was worried for a moment there! Better late than never though. I was extremely annoyed at the twist with the Angel's motivations...lies all lies!
This season has been the best one so far. I've loved it! S5 seems to be another fan favourite so i'm beyond excited to dive into that. I will react to S4 bloopers when I can and then start S05E01 :D

In case you're confused, when dean encountered azazel back in 1973 in 4x03, azazel mentioned that he had a much grander emdgame beyond raising a demon army in the season 2 finale. The scene where azazel is speaking to Lucifer in the convent is implying that the endgame to creating the psychic children and opening the devil's gate to free lilith specifically was all to free lucifer and start the apocalypse

Remember when Lilith says she doesn't survive this story? She knew the whole time. Ruby knew too because you had to have someone on the other side gain their trust. Ruby got into Sam's head about Dean's crossroads deal and here we are

If you are still confused abt Ruby. Here's how I looked at it. Think about all the times Ruby just showed up out of nowhere, JUST at the right time to help the boys. She tried to get them to do a blood sacrifice at the police station, when they were trapped. Now, imagine if she knew they would NEVER do that... but do just enough to let one demon escape, and then she could go tell Lilith to go to the station and kill everyone there. What does that do? It sends a message to the boys, "Trust Ruby when she says there's a plan". She and Lilith played a double game from two sides... manipulating the boys. Remember how Dean went to hell? Lilith came in Ruby's body and she said then that she sent Ruby far away. Now if they were together, that makes sense too... they just used the same body to play the boys. What happened when Dean went to hell? Dean breaks the first seal... but it also gave Ruby full manipulation time with Sam. She used Dean's death to get him to focus on Lilith as the sole enemy, get him obsessed enough to save his brother to probably get him started on the demon blood.. and then the blood did its part, and she controlled the supply in the best way to get him hooked on it. Dean coming back was a complication they didn't anticipate let's say, or the angels getting involved... who knows? But still as long as Ruby had Sam's ear and addiction in her control, she twisted everything just right to make the whole thing happen, while Lilith did her part from the other end. Together, Lilith and Ruby certainly played a very devious, very long game. The writers, if you look back at all the Ruby stuff, leaves this reveal possible at the end.

Absurdister I never knew why I didn’t trust Ruby at first, but looking back at everything her manipulation was so well thought out and planned. She definitely was a master manipulator.

Yeah, they were definitely playing a long game there. Though, one minor thing... Sam wasn't on demon blood that whole entire time. I think it was in "Chris Angel is a Douche-bag" that Ruby told Sam something like "You know how." when he talked about being strong enough, and he said something like "No. I'm not doing that again." Then, by the end of the episode, he'd seen Dean pretty much accepting that their lives (as hunters) weren't going to be long ones, and Sam didn't want that to be the outcome, so he told Ruby he was ready to do what he needed to. At the time, those veiled statements wouldn't have made much sense, but in retrospect, it basically means that at some point while Dean was gone, he'd tried the Demon Blood thing but then didn't like it and stopped using it. And it wasn't until the end of that episode that he got back on it again. There's also some speculation among the fans, (and I've heard even the writers and producers can't quite agree) as to weather or not Ruby was working with Lilith in Season 3 or not. (Because, apparently at that time, it wasn't the writers' intention that she was secretly working with Lilith.) So, some people wonder if Ruby actually HAD been trying to help the boys, in her own demonic and "tough-love" way, back then. But whenever Lilith got a hold of her, she sent her back to hell and they had some "quality time" while Lilith convinced Ruby to work with her. And then when she came back while Dean was in hell to help Sam, that was when she was starting to truly manipulate him. Buuut, there's honestly enough evidence for either case that it could land either way. *LOL*

Divhreaza I don't know what you're talking about as far as the writers. Kripke & the writing team stated she (Ruby) was an antagonist in season 3. It was always planned that she'd end up evil. Even Cassidy (Ruby actress in season 3) knew Ruby was manipulative & evil so she said she prepared by looking to Sharon Stone's performance in the film Basic Instinct for inspiration due to Ruby's manipulative ways. Ruby was always evil.

The 2nd ending to season 3 after the original 3-year plan ending of the series where Dean would die and remain in hell was to have Sam go darkside to save Dean and Ruby was the one who would be there prodding him along to make all the choices to do that. In Jus In Bello, she made it seem like not sacrificing Nancy the virgin was a big mistake and I remember when watching it that night, my #1 thought was that they did the right thing and that she was trying to corrupt them not to value human life. They did a good job making the viewers think twice at times, like in Heaven & Hell when they showed her protecting Anna, but Ruby was definitely always intended to be evil and be a trojan horse to Sam's defenses.

Very well put. Also, remember how Ruby once it was all done and she was waiting for Lucifer to bust loose told Sam he never needed the demon blood and how he had the power in him all along. The entire purpose of the blood was to poison Sam. We saw how Jake & Ava in season 2 started expanding their powers and both of them accomplished that by giving into the evil within them (i.e. Azazel's blood). I thought they played that out very well and I like the slow buildup. It took 2 seasons for us to see what Jake meant. Sam always had Dean keeping him away from exploring his powers and giving into the evil within him unlike the other psychic kids Azazel contacted and urged to use their powers. That episode when Dean said Sam had a secret weapon those other psychics didn't have, being Dean himself, he was so right that he didn't know it. As soon as Dean died, that's when Ruby swooped in because she knew how vulnerable Sam was and how open he would be to her manipulation. She got him to explore his powers, but thanks to Dean's influence on Sam, he felt guilty and cautious about using his powers, so even though he did give in and begin using his powers, he held himself back from going off the rails like Ava & Jake did. We saw the effects of the blood when they had Sam locked up in the panic room. I have no doubt that the demons, probably Ruby herself, was/were the one(s) causing Sam to have his hallucinations to make him dependent on it and so they could make him see whatever he needed and alter his perception to corrupt him and make him do what they wanted. I have no doubt that a natural side effect of the demon blood was causing hallucinations, but I think in When The Levee Breaks they controlled what hallucinations Sam saw because everything he saw was shown to him to rebel against Dean & Bobby. In My Bloody Valentine, Sam saw hallucinations again it seemed (or at the very least the blood was causing him pain), but it didn't seem like they were targeted like they were at the end of season 4. I have no doubt that the blood did amp up Sam's power like steroids because they knew he was unwilling to do what Jake & Ava (and even Max Miller in season 1) did to increase his powers & strength, so the demon's blood would amp up his powers like steroids to make up for the power within Sam that he was not tapping into because he didn't want to go full evil. It had a dual purpose on Sam----the steroids-like effect and the controlling effect on his mind.

Here comes Season 5! My favorite season hands down, it was the last season with the creator Eric Kripke as the head writer, Kripke had a real struggle getting 5 seasons, it always came down to last second renewals which is funny when you see how many seasons there are now. You can see how planned out many things were when you're going through season 5, it's really awesome! Thanks for the lunchtime entertainment Dakara, hope you're Monday is going awesome as well!

Yeah, this is one of those seasons that is REALLY interesting to watch the second (and subsequent) time through, because now that you know what the angels and the demons are both up to, it's easy to see where all the subtle manipulations are happening, and how ultimately, they're designed to not only get the boys into the positions they want them in, but also to keep them at odds with each other. Thank you for all your reactions, by the way. I love how analytical you get with the characters and the plotlines, and even if your guesses don't always pan out, (not that I blame you, SPN is NOTORIOUS for throwing curve-balls) they're still well-thought-out. It's also easy to see that you've come to care for these characters as much as we have, so it's wonderful seeing you react to what they're going through, and it helps remind us what that fresh perspective is like. I can't wait until you start Season 5, (which is also an emotional roller-coaster, so buckle-up and have plenty of kleen-ex handy,) and I also look forward to you watching the Season 4 gag-reel. :)

Yes. You were right when you noticed Ruby’s smirk when Sam drank her blood after Cas let her out. Was her plan all along to nudge him in this direction but still took free will. Tho as you see the “ facts” were manipulated like Deans message. They’re following the script which is all angels know. Bible n apocalypse. Rise of Lucifer. Get ready for an awesome ride for season 5!

Yep, Ruby was in on it from the very beginning. That's why she disappeared when Dean needed help. They tried to break the first seal with John, but failed, so then they needed to send Dean to hell to try again. Lilith and Ruby knew about this arrangement from the start.

Great reaction ! :) I think it was Ruby who manipulated Dean's voicemail (we can see her smile behind Sam when he listens to it). And yes it was her plan all along. For me, Ruby is one of the best plot twist, it's almost impossible to guess that she manipulates Sam since the beginning. Btw, she is really dead. I remember that I wasn't able to wait the first time I watched this season final, it was 1am and I wanted so badly to watch the first episode of season 5 so I did it. ^^ Season 5 has many great episodes and EVERYTHING FINALLY MAKES SENSE. :D I know you will enjoy it ! ;) See you soon ! :)

There's a reason why we call the break 'hellatus'. And yes, it was SO hard to KNOW what Ruby was up to and say nothing. She was a total Lucifer fangirl. There's factions and both her and Lilith worked to release him. And the angels, so sure they will win, and so unconcerned for human life on Earth. I always saw it as....to an angel, their perspective is life on Earth is just a blip, and heaven (or hell) is forever, so what does it matter? While God has apparently 'left the building', I guess they feel they just have to follow 'the plan', kneejerk obedience no matter what. And it seems convenient, don't you think, that Cas was sent to save Dean AFTER he 'broke' and broke the first seal. Yeah, both sides were working toward this all along. And you think this was crazy, wait for next season.

We pretty much got the answer back in season 5 when Michael told Dean what he did in The Song Remains The Same. He tells Dean about how he can't fight city hall when "city hall" was being run by Michael, so it was never God's plan. Also how he mentions how he raised Lucifer in a way very few people would understand (pretty much only Dean). We know what Lucifer thought about humans and after hearing that statement from Michael & seeing how Michael's #1 priority was to get the true vessels for him & his brother and how that took grooming human bloodlines for 1000s of years, it was no surprise why Lucifer thought so lowly of humans when Michael did the same considering how he treated them as pawns in his master plan and he had no respect or regard for their safety. That scene in Swan Song where Sam & Lucifer are seen talking through that mirror where we see demon possessed people who Lucifer had Azazel surround Sam with in various points in his life is a microcosm of what Michael did on a much grander scale in the way he groomed humanity. It's pretty amazing how similar the archangel brothers are when you consider that scene and the speech Michael gave Dean in The Song Remains The Same. The cupid in My Bloody Valentine mentions how important the marriage of John & Mary Winchester was along with Sam & Dean's conceptions & births to the big boss (Michael). We learn in that episode that cupids are responsible for couples falling in love and having children, so when you go back to In The Beginning when they explore Azazel's deals in 1973, 10 years before the dates of the births of the psychic children of Sam's generation, it's no coincidence that they were born when they were. The only way for Azazel's deals to be honored was if the cupids were involved and that wouldn't happen without the approval of the top dog, Michael. I knew well before they had that encounter between Michael & Lilith in season 15 that there was some kind of arrangement between Michael and Azazel. It was also obvious to me that Michael usurped the natural order to have done all that he was able to do, and that meant that he was involved in Death's sealing. I posted this during season 13 and it was the following year that the alt Michael revealed that he did that very thing on his own world, so I have no doubt the main universe Michael did the same. There's no way Death would've allowed him to do all that he did. In fact, we saw how not long after Death was freed again, he helped the Winchesters not only seal Lucifer, who bound him as his slave, but also Michael, who usurped the natural order. That was no accident. So the natural order finally was restored in season 6. But until Death was freed in Abandon All Hope, the angels, cupids, Fate Sisters and even the reapers all worked for Michael. All this from following the awesome trail of details that Kripke and the other writers under his supervision gave us.

Sooooo , you like Supernatural? lol The boys keep getting manipulated by both sides, demons and angels. They need to learn they have to trust each other first and not allow themselves to get pulled apart by outside forces. Together they win, apart they lose. Season 5 is upon us. It contains so many gems, some of my all time favorite episodes. You will experience the full spectrum of emotions. You will jump, you will worry, you will laugh and you will cry (a lot). This was always ruby's plan, since her introduction. It's spy 101, to save the target so they can trust you. She was always trying to get same to use his powers, for him hooked on get blood, not to mention the other sketchy stuff. Like how did she get out of the trap dean put her in last season, why did lilith not kill her when she caught her, when she would've killed anyone else if they betrayed her, instead lilith just tortured her a bit(that was just to keep her cover with the other demons. Only lilith knew that ruby was on her side, all the other demons thought she was just a traitor. This was just a deep cover to make it more convincing, which helped her get closer to sam and dean, since it appeared like the demons didn't like her, making it look like she could be trusted) It was just a plot to get close to sam

I cannot wait for you to watch season 5! It was originally planned to end at the end of season 5 but fans wanted to keep it going so the original writer left after the end. It literally ends perfectly. It would have been a great series finale but I’m still glad they kept it going!

Watching these seasons as they happened was great because every summer I rewatched the seasons and picked up on details I never noticed the first time and sometimes it took multiple watchings to pick up on some of the most minor details that make you appreciate the writing they had back then all that much more. Only thing that kind of sucked was that we had to wait till September-October for the previous season's DVD set to be released but that wasn't a problem since I recorded them all on tape anyway. Also, the original DVD sets for the first like 6, maybe 7 seasons came with stuff that the later manufactured sets of those seasons didn't have and I'm sure they changed the nice cardboard packaging that the first 3 seasons had & even the different plastic packaging that seasons 4-6 (maybe 7 too, I forget) had to the crappy quality cases that the latest seasons use. Season 4 had a nice lenticular case with Dean's hand popping out of his grave with Cas in the background as its specialty. I think season 3 came with a toy Impala and another one came with an Impala keychain. I'm pretty sure another one came with a t-shirt. I know I have them all somewhere.

4:45 Sammy going Darkside 5:06 Manipulation at it's best. The Angels were on board all along 7:14 lol Bible camp 7:49 Zachariah said he would make sure Sam played his part, he just needed a little push 8:09 Decisions decisions decisions. Finally Cas making it happen 8:40 What a fucking twist. When I first heard him say that I was like Fuck! Something in the back of my mind told me Ruby knew the whole time. She was right, she was awesome. I gotta give it to her and that knife. That knife got her in the door w/ them. 9:42 She's always known, it was her MO from the beginning. That evil bitch played Sam VERY WELL. Dean was on to her from day one and was 100% right about her. He did say she probably works for Lilith in an earlier episode. I believe it was no rest for the wicked before he went to hell. I can't lie I liked Ruby too but became suspicious of her with that smirk that bothered you when he was drinking her blood. I never fully trusted her but damn she was GOOD! I think All the Angels and Demons knew Lilith was the last seal. 11:51 ROFL at work!!!! Yes this is what they do, cliffhangers. 12:34 The Angels and Ruby both played the Winchesters. They might as well be on the same team. Our precious Ruby ended up not being a Gem at all. She was fake from the beginning and this was the plan between her and Lilith. But that knife though! I also doubt the knife would have killed Lilith being that she was more powerful than Alistair. She just didn't wanna take any chances w/ it when her and Sam were about to do the horizontal mambo. You are absolutely right, weigh too many thoughts on this episode. I'm sure more will pop in to my head as the day goes by. But anyway, welcome to Season 5. You are in for a Great Adventure Scream Machine Roller Coaster ride. I thought season 4 was incredible, just wait............. I have to say I like your discussions of the episodes because you have more to say than most who watch it. Season 4 was so great, but it was also a little hard to watch because of everything Sam did. He lied to Dean a lot, drank demon blood, and even after all of Dean's warnings about Ruby, he still chose her over his own brother. While it's sometimes fun to watch them disagree, it's always hharder when it's about something as serious as this. Can't wait for season 5!

I started watching at season 6 so I was happy I could go right to season 5 without waiting. Which was great because waiting 3 months would have been horrible. lol Also remember at monster at the end of the book with first appearance of chuck episode Lilith told Sam she was willing to make a deal because she knew she would be killed off right before the good part starts. At the time it didn't make sense but it does after this episode she knew her death was the final seal.

I'm not sure if the angels altered Dean's voicemail message to Sam or if it was Ruby who made him hallucinate an altered version of that message with the demon blood he drank like she did to him in the panic room because both are entirely possible. I'm leaning towards the demon blood though since we didn't see the angels making a call using their voice copy power (that Anna used in The Song Remains The Same). It could also have been Michael or Raphael with their reality altering powers. I need to get the season 4 SPN companion and check it out in case they confirm that.

Still one of the best finales, so dark and conflicting. Loved seeing ur reaction all the way through. I gotta say, you're the only person I know who fell for Ruby right up to the end, it was kinda amusing, but then again the character was well done, it was hard to figure out where she stood. And yeah the way it ends is a bitch! XD

I can't still know if the Angels or Ruby did the whole "transformation of the voicemail". While Sam is on the phone, you can see Ruby smirking behind him. Not to mention that it is what pushed Sam to drink the demon blood... And yes, Ruby was always on Lilith's side, even on s3.

Well it's clear there was collaboration between the angels & the demons long before it was revealed. The main evidence being the psychic kids like Sam, Andy, Ava, Max Miller, Jake, etc being born when they were. It was the jobs of cupids to match John & Mary Winchester and to make them & other couples procreate when they did to spawn their children, and when you consider who the boss of the cupids was (Michael), there's no way that there wasn't collaboration. Azazel clearly had Michael's approval or else his deals would've never been honored. So it's very possible what Zachariah said about the nudging was just him knowing that the demons (Ruby) were taking care of it. We know archangels and possibly even Zachariah had reality warping powers as seen with what Gabriel did and Zach did in It's A Terrible Life and again in The End, which I still think was never a possible future but something Zach showed Dean to make him say yes.

Everybody was being manipulated, Cas included. As Zachariah said, they lied to the lower angels (those on Earth) about wanting to stop the Apocalypse. Those angels were really trying to stop the Apocalypse, but were, of course, because of the interventions/misguidance of the senior angels, unsuccessful. Imagine how many siblings/fellow soldiers/friends Cas lost because of that. And, when he discovered the truth and tried to tell Dean, he was tortured in Heaven and persuaded that letting the Apocalypse happen was what's was best for everyone, "Paradise on Earth" and all that. If Cas hadn't open the door, another angel would have. The difference is that Cas would have been "reprogrammed" again or killed. However, Sam was the only one that could kill Lilith, so I think that, all thing considered, Cas doesn't bare much of the blame for Lucifer rising.

and there we have it..... what a great reaction to as you said, just a strong capper to truly creative and well written arc: with the reveal that everything from the beginning: Yellow Eyes "creating" the special children like Sam, Dean's sacrifice to bring Sam back from the dead, Dean going to hell and unwittingly breaking the first seal, the intro of Ruby the "good demon", et al were all part of a long con bringing us to this point with the rise of Lucifer and the beginning of the end...... and you are so correct that the wait between the seasons was just painful....but so nice to re-experience a little of that again with you as you threw your hands up at the end... but am jealous that your wait is only a click away.... lol great stuff D, as always and a big CTU for you!!!

Well I'd agree if it was real life, but here, Bobby was right about Sam drowning so he had to do something to get Dean out of it because the world was at stake. It sucks for Dean and all the weight on his shoulders, but that is what makes him who he is. As much as I hated the series finale and season 15 in general, I thought one thing they got right was Dean finally getting his rest, though the way it happened was ridiculously lame and anticlimactic.

It was so hard listening to you thinking Ruby was helping them and not tell you. I wanted to comment so much, but I knew I’d spoil something. I came into Supernatural late, I started watching when they were on season 10. So I was somewhat better not having to wait. Though the show is still an absolute emotional rollercoaster and a feels nightmare. I absolutely love this show! When I first saw this episode my mom threatened to stop me from watching it because I was screaming at the TV and crying.

Oh my god, I was waiting for this reaction for a long time. And it was great :D You had no idea about any of this hehe. Both angels and demons manipulate the boys this whole season. Cas was awesome at the end. And Bobby. They were both really important. Even though they ended up breaking the seals but it was really hard having the angels planing to do it and Ruby and the demons too. Rewatching knowing all of this, seeing all Ruby’s lies is really interesting. Poor boys they thought they were doing the right thing killing lilith, and you don’t expect the plot twist because you see Ruby helping the boys the whole time, you just don’t think that’s a bad thing, but hey, manipulation.. And remember that things started to get real bad after Dean went to hell, Sam spent a lot of time alone with Ruby, before that she couldn’t really control Sam completely, but with Dean gone she finally started to poison him. Aaand things get even worse when Sam lies to Dean about it. Then they go along with Ruby’s plan because they are desperate and don’t communicate with each other. Dean too it’s sad how he was resurrected and suddenly he has this new “purpose” of “God needs you” and discovering it’s just the angels manipulating him to do what they want, start the apocalypse.. But at the end it’s good that he’s just not having it and him and Cas, and now Sam see how they were lied to. Lol sorry for the long comment, I couldn't comment about any of this before because spoilers of course :p

FINALLY! Have never commented out of fear I would spoil about Ruby...manipulative demon spawn. She boils my blood. Katie and Gen did an amazing job with her. She did know, this whole time. Think about it, even back in "Jun in Bello" with the virgin and the missing Colt. Ruby KNEW the Colt was missing. And after, she went and told Lillith resulting in everyone's death, including Hendrickson. RUBY was the leak. This whole time she played Sam. Watching your reactions, and belief in Ruby has had me looking forward to this ep (in a sad/awful sort of way) since S3.

Also, don't forget that Ruby altered the Colt and how when they fired it at the demon witch in Malleus Maleficarum, she was able to stop the bullet, something not even Azazel could do to the Colt's bullet before it was altered. So I think she did something to safeguard it to prevent it being used against her and other specific demons.

I feel so horrible for these two boys! Dean carries the guilt of knowing he started the process that lead to the apocalypse, and now Sam carries the guilt of knowing he ended that process. These boys do NOT have it easy, and it kind of breaks my heart. To be honest I kind of feel Bobby was too hard on Dean. He kind of underminded some VERY legitimate feelings in my eyes. I mean, Dean has EVERY right to feel hurt, betrayed, angry.... you name it, and Bobby is just belittling that. I get WHY he does it, because they need to save Sam, and they don't have time for Dean to take a few months to work through it, because by then it would be too late, but.... I wish he had done that whole exchange differently. He could have just said "I get that you are angry, and you have EVERY right to be, but right now it's about saving Sam from himself before it is too late. If, afterwards, you need some time away from him I get that, but right now he needs us and we can't afford to sit by and do nothing. Further more, you would NEVER forgive yourself if you don't do everything you can to keep that boy safe, and you know it. Now let's go". Oh well... all in all I LOVED your reaction, and I am SO excited to see you reacting to season 5!

I dont know how you missed it but Ruby says that every demon was out to get me.I played my part.I was the most loyal.Only Lillith knew hence why every other demon was trying to kill her. The next season finale is even more awesome.Just wait. Also,get ready to meet the most awesome demon on the show.You are going to love him. And one last thing. You said how lucifer looks like. He needs to find a host since he doesnt have a "shape". Thats why they didnt show anything.Only the light.

@@Gatz22 I think they're very unlucky. Sure they don't have to wait, but they will never have the real Supernatural watching experience that those of us who are old timers to the series had. For us, there was no guarantee that there was another season. At first it almost ended at season 3. Then it almost ended at season 5. I think the next point where it almost ended after that was season 8 and I definitely remember season 10 being a point where it may not have been renewed. I took the summers between seasons to rewatch the show which I did I don't know how many times by now, and I picked up on so many small details that I missed and I keep picking up on some. It's absolutely amazing how those details in the Kripke years form such a spectacular mosaic of a storyline.

@@Gatz22 I forget when exactly the show went from the 3 year plan where it would end in season 3 with Dean going to hell to expanding to 5 seasons. I think it was during the strike itself where Kripke decided to change it because he didn't want the series to end abruptly due to the strike after only 16 episodes were filmed. He got the idea of angels because he thought it would be cool to have a war between angels & demons in the background that was comparable to the war against the empire in Star Wars. I remember there was a point during S3 where I wasn't worried because it was revealed there would be another season and when I saw what they did in season 4, I was glad the strike changed things to happen as they did. I definitely remember being surprised how the show got a 6th season because that wasn't revealed until very close to Swan Song.
