Love that expanding ball thing. It pretty much explains exactly what's happening. Weaker amps means less dynamic range especially with more volume. The reason is, at some point the quietest nuances get pushed in volume more than the bigger nuances (which are the harder/louder/ more powerful parts, like bass), meaning the difference of volume between the loudest part and the quietest part gets narrower, and thus, you get congestion of the sound, which kills the "space" between the sounds, even before hitting the sealing/max-throughoutput of the amp, at which point we get clipping/distortion. Most modern devices like phones will not reach clipping/distortion, but the dynamic range will be massively lower the harder-to-drive your head/earphones are, even if the volume is enough. It is basically as it's said - more/better amplification = frequencies scale equally = higher dynamic range = bigger/better/more-spacious sound. These things can be calculated based on the amp and the head/earphones specifications I guess, but I'm really bad at math/formulas, so... yeah. Awesome review!
@SuperReview5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for that explanation! Pinned ✌️
@ron95115 жыл бұрын
No, if you don't listen so loud that your phones amp clips/distorts, then a volume matched a/b test with an amp will not be distinguishable. The P1 only needs 1mw for 96db which any phone can easily outout since the P1 is also only 20ohms. And ofc louder sounds better, you can do the same by raising your phone volume until it starts to clip/distort once you get near max volume. Softer things sound louder but also louder things sound even louder which is not good for your ears.
@nitromenoob5 жыл бұрын
@@ron9511 weak amps only push voltage and not current. Many phones have a built in current limiter to stop the built in amp from drawing too much power which drains the battery. Strong amps push loads of current. Current doesn't increase the the volume as much as it increases the impact and punchiness of the sound. The down side is that they require much more power. I think the formula would be P=i^2r power=current x current x resistance.
@ron95115 жыл бұрын
@@nitromenoob V=IR, ohms law is basic highschool science. Audiophiles seem not to understand. In short they are all related, boost voltage you increase current and also power since P=VI. Amplifiers boost voltage to increase current. Btw that punchinesd and impact is nonsense. You either have enough power so that sound doesn't clip (which might reduce perceived punchiness) or you don't. 99% of headphones can be driven by phones to above average volumes without clipping.

Jon_in_ space I found the P1 planar sound hard to explain or describe. I found the micro details unnerving at first, removing the veil on familiar music, , was almost to accurate sounding until i got used to them. Break in had marginal difference. BGGR reviews on P1, Fiio M11, and pairing them both w the tube amp Oriolus BA300s...suffice it to say, this rig and pairing....upscaling ALL music to DSD, or FLAC hi rez files, remastered recordings, adding gain for P1s....is finally my end game rig. Allows me to experience multiple genres of music w equal outstanding sound. Sure there is better IEMs out there, but for $150 the planar P1 is stellar!

U were spot on w your review of the P1, basically everything i experienced, terrific job, because u did not bail out, u opted to try to get the most out of the P1 in many ways! Full disclosure: KZ fan, amongst many other IEMS, tried a few amps, sources, dabbled in hi rez...but nothing wowed me...rather than churning thru the hobby, adding to my collection of gear....i wanted an END GAME RIG....max out my budget, save $$$ flipping nearly ALL my gear. MANY hours researching, reviews read, videos watched, specs read...I selected the FiiO M11, tethered it to an Oreolus BA300s tube amp, and Tin Audio/HI FI P1 planars....really took a leap of faith, gear historically would not be safe choices, maybe models a bit leading edge, pricey for me, yet all this gear did not disappoint. The P1s lovvve volume...they literally go into turbo mode! The sound of planars is nothing like u ever heard, because they engineered it right! The sound draws u in, makes u feel uneasy with its pinpoint accuracy in micro details...nothing u ever experienced....u end up playing familiar music, not only hearing vocals previously muted, but instruments accurately reproduced. Not a wide sounstage, but an IEM unlike everything else I owned. Close to end game rig and Audio Nirvana, as i will ever own that compliments each device well....def keeper rig....BGVP electrostatics i would love to listen to....but cannot afford. Fun hobby..

My experience with them is they don't really focus on any one point highs, mids or lows, however they give you the ability to focus in on any one point in the music simply by listening for it and hear it clearly without the other instruments of voices covering it as if shining a spotlight on it and it having space to focus on, like in a photoshop file using layers, on even some scarily tricky Tracks like Blue Oyster Cult's Joan Crawford, Pink Floyds Dogs you can actually hear the transistion of the dog samples to the symphonized harmonics. They give a clarity too to quiet things such as The Police's Would you be My Girl. The bass isn't thumping but it presented, highs don't jump out, they require more volume even with a dap, but with high gain on they allow a level of dissection I would not ever imagine for something new in box at this price point. Tin HiFi really have pushed the envelope for planar technology with these and making a well built, good looking, good sounding compact iem using the technology that given products just last year I would never have imagined would be available to the world this soon.

Believe me, these are better than most IEM in general. not only limited to Chifi. I've bought a second pairs in November, after I've sold most of my other (expensives) IEMS. I've just kept my Chifi IEMS. And these are also my favorite headphones pair of all my other headphones (Mr Speaker Aeon, Hifiman HE 580, Denon D7000, Sennheiser HD800...and I've had many other headphones, none gave me as much fun as those P1). Tonality is spot on, soundstage is absolutly incredible, and that speed makes the music so live...I don't know how they managed to do that, but now my only fear is that they stop selling them. That's why I bought another pair. But they have few downsides : they need a lot of juice to work correctly. I've had to change my previous dap (A&K AK100II) and after many tests, I can says that they need at least 180mW @32Ohms, which does limit the number of compatible DAP (I'm using a Shanling M3s on the balanced output). Then, isolation isn't great, due to the form of the IEMs. Forget about them in public transport if isolation is one of your main concern. And they also need to be listened at a certain volume level to render that magical sound. At lower volume, they will be flat and pretty boring. But as they are never fatiguing, higher volume isn't really an issue.

I got my P1s based on the hype and I still can't make up my mind how I feel about them. Some days I think they're the best things I've ever heard. Other days they're just weird. I agree with almost everything you said, I just find the upper treble (10K+) really hit and miss. Some music I listen to I think "THIS is what it was supposed to sound like" as if other headphones have been hiding details in the upper treble from me. Then with some other music I feel like I'm listening to the music through some weird low pass filter and the sizzle of the upper treble is a bit overwhelming and drowns out the mids. Maybe it's down to the music and the mixing.

Most definitely it comes down to the quality of the recording, mixing and mastering. Furthermore the bitrate and resolution of the sound file and conversion of it. (i hope that doesnt mean anything and they are all the same tuning). they also layed loose in the box when i opened it like yours. (not a big deal but still). i think they sound really good especialy through my dragonfly cobalt. the cobalt gives them some nice space and airyness. i like them with the foam tips and comply t400 isolation. the complys give the best seal for more subbass and gets rid of ALL the sibilance while the included foamies sound a little bit brighter and more detailed. the silicone tips are too sibilant for me alltogether. i have no issues with comfort as i hardly feel them especialy with the complys. the tin p1 and the etymotic er4xr are now my favorite iems.

The stock tips didn't quite do it for me, nor even SpinFits that work perfectly with all my other IEMs. I ended up with a solid seal and much richer sound using large Comply Comfort Plus tips. The bass livened up quite a bit...for me a very satisfying sound with awesome detail retrieval. Still, I find the IMR Acoustics R1 Zenith more satisfying, thanks to the customizations (tuning filters and open/closed back option). To my ears, using the copper filter with open back, they have a massive, enveloping sound that's a bit more "there." You may enjoy the pink or blue filters better, tho. That what you experienced with "more Juice" is very close to what happens with balanced outputs, usually 2,5 mm Jack, but also those 4,4mm plugs become more common recently....You can see in the "Specifications" of modern DAPs that their "balanced" headphone-output give more Power to the Phones, sometimes even twice the Power of "unbalanced" Output. On top of it, the Noise-Level can be lower, which is not always possible to hear, but it actually improves Dynamics and Details little bit, ESP in your favorit "Airy" Range.

Tin HiFi is a cool company. Great value for money. Cool designs, which is huge coming from me, who prefers the SE215 body over everything else. But one of my favorite things: no obnoxious branding all over the body. I've just ordered some T4s, I really hope they live up to my expectation. And I am expecting an "eargasm", as some call it. My SE215s served me well, but i feel they need an upgrade, and the lack of earwax filter keeps me from going back to Shure. I wish there could be the driver and earwax filter of the T4s in a steel version of the body of SE215s. That would probably be the ultimate IEM, at least for me. Or maybe I could make my own.....? I have some very basic metalworking experience, and I'm pretty decent at soldering, and I have some ammateur CAD skills. I really really want that thing. Also MMCX is the only good connector for IEMs, since it is the standard. Also, for my player, I use a Sony Walkman. But a 1996 WM-EX670 compact cassette player Walkman. That stuff sounds AMAZING!!! One suggestion/comment: You might not be down for this or maybe you have done this in the past but have you considered giving .5 star ratings? I think 4 stars, given the build quality/fit issues you pointed out is fair but because you raved about the sound, I wonder if 4.5 stars may have been more appropriate. And my dilemma, question for Super* and others: P1 versus Ikko OH10, which one? I know they're good in different ways. It seems the P1 is the king of tone (timbre?) and OH10 have strong soundstage. The most efficient way to power them otg should be stacked [a source + a capable mini-amp], a bit of a hassle if they're not used to that sort of thing. Thanks for the Great review...

If by bass you mean rumbling sub-bass, you can cover the one port hole which boosts it slightly (measurements will show an increase but you can barely hearthe difference). Even with EQ they don't really respond strongly to anything below (rough guess) 60Hz, so EDM, DnB and Hip Hop won't be very energetic on these ever. You'd want to buy them for the detail and musicality (which is excellent, unless you like dark sounding earphones). At least that's what I've found after a month with them.

My honest opinion is that "what the artist intended" is an impossible thing to chase. While I'm not a basshead by any means, I still consider bass performance to be very important, probably for different reasons than bassheads. I don't want thumping beats rattling my skull, I'll try to explain what I'm after: In many pop songs that have very cleanly produced (some might say generic sounding) instrumentals, the bass guitar is extremely subtle and simply gets lost in the mix unless I'm listening with decent equipment. What I love is when I'm able to clearly make out the melody the bass guitarist is playing on tracks where the bass is supposed to melt into the background. This is often my favorite part of the production and I can't stand when it's hard to hear. How do these perform in this aspect?
@SuperReview4 жыл бұрын
I quite like the bass on the P1. Do you have a song in mind I could test?
@AutistCat4 жыл бұрын
Super* Review First here's an example where it's very easy to hear the bass guitar: TV-2 - Sommer I Danmark Listen to how prominent the bass guitar is in the chorus. This is what I like to hear. It's also easy to hear in the verses. Now a pop production where the bass guitar is much less important and not as audible, but I still enjoy that I'm able to hear it with my TRN V90: Britney Spears - I Will Be There And finally, here's a modern pop track where the bass actually plays the hook, and thus it's important that the bass guitar is prominent and has texture: Taylor Swift - Lover On this one I feel like I don't get quite enough detail in the bass, but it could also be the fault of mixing and mastering. What do you think?
@SuperReview4 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I'll just start by saying I'm not familiar with these tracks, and my only way to listen to them is w/ Google Play Music subscription. The bass guitar doesn't seem very prominent in any of them, with the Tin P1s or even with a bassier set I tried, Moondrop Starfield. A track with bass guitar that sounds great on P1 is Queen's "Cool Cat," but it's a very simple mix so not surprising the bass guitar comes through well.
