The front wheel is definitely one of the top three most important wheels in biking.

I'm coming back to riding after over 15 years, I used to be able to jump and do stuff on a bmx but for some reason I can't even lift the front wheel on my mtb now, time to practice.

I got you covered! The longer wheelbase from BMX to MTB is likely the cause - I’m sure you’ll pick it back up quickly!

Could you make same tutorial about lifting and moving rear wheel ?

Absolutely - this video is the full breakdown for rear wheel lifting and movement (the title is just slightly misleading): kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z2LEn6KnaJmKn6s

On my 3rd day of practice, did the trackstack against the wall with no brakes for 90 seconds! Will try to "leave the nest" tomorrow. Perhaps this old dog will be able to learn a new trick.

I can unweight my front wheel no problem - can move my weight back and down and get into manual position. I can front wheel lift on the spot small rotations say, up to 30 degrees - but any more than that I can't do it because I can't put the two together. I can either do a lift with my arms and turn the bike while the front wheel is up or I can go over the back and do an unweight. I can't seem to put the two together - it's like for me they're mutually exclusive. Not sure what to try and practice to get the two together. My bike is a 29er but I'm not sure that should be an issue that much.

Hmm, I think I understand. So you're trying to lift the front wheel while rolling and move it, sort of manual style? I find that the further back I get, the easier it is to rotate on the back wheel - like I'm just a little bit further back than I would be when I'm manualing. That gives me more ability to rotate when the bike is super steep like that.

@@SuperRiderTV just to be clear - I'm trying to do the lift on a standstill / from a trackstand. The issue I have is that I can't combine the sideways action with the exaggerated shift of weight backward that's needed for the lift. I can do a lift and move the front wheel to the side, but my technique doesn't have me lean back very far, so I'm not doing it how you and others do it. (I want to be able to) The trouble is that I can't combine that extreme backward movement with side movement - it feels like the sideways shift and the moving my weight backwards are very hard to combine.

Thank you! Great vid! Not sure which is my "stronger foot".. Is it the one I feel comfortable putting forward when I'm trackstaning?
@SuperRiderTV
@SuperRiderTV 3 жыл бұрын
That’s correct, whichever foot is naturally forward when you ride or trackstand - that’s your strong foot!

I tried this from stationary. Front wheel lifted ok, but the grip on the rear wheel dug in and had such drag force the front didn't hardly move. So the tyre prevented the rotation. I had the back brake on. Be great to hear your suggestions. Maybe I'm just weak and need to give it a bit more force!

Interesting! One of the ways we typically troubleshoot moving the front wheel has been to really focus on your knee in the direction you want to go. So if you wanted to go to the left, open your left knee away from the top tube as you're pulling up on the front wheel - that should help drive the front wheel in the direction you want to go. You might also try to slightly unweight the rear wheel, pop your hips/waist straight up to momentarily unweight the back wheel to allow it to spin more freely. Lastly, add some extra air to your tires, so that it doesn't flex/rebound as much as normal - the more solid that tire is, the less it will try to grip the ground. Any of these (or all three) should hopefully help get you moving - definitely let me know! If you have any more trouble with it, pop in to the Twitch livestream tomorrow and we can run through it live.

@@SuperRiderTV Thanks for the reply. Thinking about your answer I'm pretty sure I am locked with knees quite tight for my stability as I'm still only just getting started trying these trials moves. Really appreciate the tips and I'll now try those and see if I can get an improvement. Although unweighting the front to lift it and then unweighting the back to allow it to rotate all with out falling sideways sounds like good timing challenge to practice.

The best advice I can give to anyone starting trials is to keep your knees wide and slightly bent - this gives you a strong and balanced foundation, and everything will flow from there. Anxious to hear how it works for you - good luck! 👊
