Keep talking up Southern Italy ❤️👍 I’ve been to Rome, Naples, Sorrento etc but the short time we spent in Calabria and other parts of SI were my favourites. We’re heading back to Italy in May 2021 to see Joe Satriani in Florence (love that city) and thinking of heading back to the southern homeland once the concert is done. But....I’ve heard Tuscany is beautiful that time of year 😎

You are right about the Southern Italy / Calabria misinformation regarding the mafia. It has been there since I was child growing up in Cosenza, although I was born in Canada. It is the most beautiful part of Italy along with Sicily, the food the people and the natural beauty all in a small area, along with lot of history. You should take a trip along the whole coast of Calabria and include the Sila where you can ski in the winter or go fishing. There is so much to see and learn in that small province when it comes to Greece (Magna Grecia),Romans, Normans,Turks,Arabs and many other civilizations. Did you know the name Italy comes from Calabria? They were a tribe living there. I am happy that you are promoting such a beautiful part of southern Italy, it has for too long been neglected by the big travel organizations. Keep it up!😎🇨🇦

The topic is a bit more complex than that. In terms of petty crime such as mugging or pickpocketing Calabria is very very safe, safer than Rome, Naples, Barcelona or Paris, the problem is almost non existing. Mafia is more of a lobby that controls certain aspects of economy and influences politics in decision like money spending in services and infrastructure, therefore roads sometimes are not well maintened compared to other parts of Italy or western Europe. The presence of mafia in Calabria is stronger in the southest part, more precisely in the province of Reggio Calabria, where shops and businesses are likely to have to pay protection money. The northern part of Calabria, therefore Scalea, Santa Domenica, etc is way less influenced by it. Gun shootings and mafia murders nowadays very unlikely to happen, certainly way less than in the US where firearms are more available (you can check the statistics). so, if you want to move to Calabria and open a very florishing business u might catch someone's attention, if you only want to retire there and open a bnb, go ahead, no risks at all!

Hi Chris. Buena sera! It's evening here in California. This video eases my mind about the mafia (which is something I've been wondering about) but makes me uneasy regarding Calabria's intent to increase tourism. I lived in Hawaii for a bit and their dependence on tourism was ruining quality of life for locals, and ironically detrimentally impacted vacationers' stay. The pandemic has been an economic tsunami and, as well, natural disasters (i.e, earthquake and flood) can paralyze a town and make recovery very difficult if they are dependent on tourism revenue. I hope I don't sound argumentative, it's just my opinion - which is weak, I know, since I've never run a town - but I hope Calabria focuses more on bringing in people who want to build a life there, it's the residents, and services that support them, that will help build and continue to nurture a stable and prospering economy.

Rome to Calabria is about 4.5 - 5 hours south. You have ot be careful where you buy a holiday home in any country. Thieves do find out who is not there for n=months at a time and ggo n and take eventing. This is true in France and many other countries as well. It is unfortunately so if you get a holiday home, make sure it is in a populated area and make friends with your neighbors and get someone to watch it for your when you aren't there.

My take after researching antimafia organizations these past few years: 'Ndrangheta (the Calabrian Mafia) is absolutely still a powerful organization, and it's consistently listed as one of the most significant cocaine trafficking groups in the world. That being said, you are absolutely right in saying that the average person has nothing to worry about, especially not tourists. 'Ndrangheta employs violence just as brutally as other organizations, sadly, but the instances are typically internal, or would materialize in intimidation to businesses, politicians, etc. One of the factors that makes 'Ndrangheta so strong is that it is built as a business, and open violence leads to state attention, which is undoubtedly bad for business. In reality, the mafia doesn't care about you; the only interaction a tourist would have with 'Ndrangheta would be a few extra euros on your bills which go to local clans. Or, if you were to buy cocaine, that's where it came from. By the way your channel is lovely! Thank you for posting so much!

That is so unfair. Do people not go to Rome because one of the people they pass by maybe mafie ? He / She really should offer photo ops like in front of Colloseo. I am willing to bet the number of tourists killed in Calabria is very low lol. cmon dark humor is funny too. Okay tourist question, not unsolvable, personal. My cherished international travel, including 2 times Rome is carefully thought out., I plan in as little stress as possible. Sure, I'll pay 100 bucks more for the non stop ticket. Another shorter flight from London usually is not a problem. What I suspect may cause unwanted vacation stress is trying to buy a rail or bus ticket in busy terminal where it would be easy to cause a scene point at a phrase book. Sometimes the phone internet I buy works, sometimes not, mostly yes, but no long enough I can't count on it. I live in LA. Rule #1 No car on vacation. How would I or any prospective tourist get all the way down ther to the tip of the boot ?

Hi David! We always purchase our tickets through the Trenitalia website before we go. I thenI have it on my phone and when the conductor comes through I show him the phone and he scan the ticket. It is a really nice train ride down south. The views are spectacular.
