ECW was firing off of all cylinders in 95. The bloody rivalry between Raven vs Dreamer was the feud of the year that included Cactus Jack turning heel in joining Ravens ever growing stable Ravens Nest. Mikey Whipwreck became the company's underdog ECW Champion that was constantly being contended by the Sandman, The Gangstas debuted, and they feuded with the Public Enemy in a bloody tag team feud. And then towards the end of the year for just 4 months you had Steve Austin debut where he lets loose on the company he worked for prior WCW, and we saw glimpses of his future character Stone Cold character. He immediately inserted himself in the ECW World Championship picture against The Sandman and Mikey Whipwreck. And though he never won the championship it did show off what a main eventing Steve Austin could look like. ECW in 95 was just an all around legendary year that only got even better in 96. While WCW and WWF in 95 were still trying and failing to capture the sucess they had in 80s instead of leaning into the contemporary era of the 90s. WCW would get it together in 96 but it would take the WWF another two years before they began that transition and took notes from ECW.

I like how Austin, in his older years, gained perspective on his WCW firing. Even though he was a good hand and a decent promo, what really made him stand out from the roster of the WCW roster and what was so Stunning about Steve Austin? It's something he said he couldn't answer, so while it may have sucked and hindsight being 20/20 shows he would be a star, I kind of understand the logic in letting Austin go. ECW would be a haven for folks to reinvent themselves or figure things out. Austin, Foley, Al Snow, even Matt Bourne post Doink, all did pretty great work in ECW and Austin is the biggest benefactor of his time in Philadelphia.

Him being able to cut long form promos really helped, though imo some of his stuff from WWF was great too. Austin is just a great talker and weirdly underrated if you think about people talking about best mic guys of all time. There are still people in 2024 who come up with ridiculous _what-if-Stone-Cold-had-been-in-WCW_ "thought experiments"... "Stunning Steve Austin" went as far as he was ever going to go in WCW, no matter what he said in his ECW promos. His WWF success would have never happened in WCW. Because "Stone Cold Steve Austin" would have never happened without the genuine bitterness and anger over his firing from WCW. And WCW kicked the WWF's ass every week during Austin's initial rise as "Stone Cold" in '96, '97. Up until April 1998. What slowly turned the tide on the WWF side of the "Moday Night Wars", was the start of the Austin/McMahon feud after the "Royal Rumble 1998" in mid-January. Without Vince McMahon as the antagonist, you never ever get the best and most successful version of "Stone Cold". Try to name one other feud/storyline that Austin was involved with in his career, that can measure up to the McMahon feud in any way! Or don't - because there is none! Less than a month earlier, in late-December 1997, WCW made the "fast count" blunder in the main event of "Starrcade", that made Hogan, Sting, and Bret Hart all look stupid. Not a lot went right with WCW's booking after that and the WWF eventually took over for the majority of the last three quarters of 1998. WCW had one more strong phase in August/September '98 - and of course the Hogan vs. Goldberg match in the Georgia Dome on "Nitro", for one strong week in July. After that, they only won one more week in October - and that was it. They never beat the WWF again. "Starrcade 1997" was the beginning of the beginning of the end. So, WCW dominated during Austin's initial rise in the WWF. What would they have needed him for? What could "Stunning Steve" have possibly added to the nWo era? Austin's real, outstanding, exceptional, next-level success came inextricably linked in tandem with Vince McMahon in 1998. Stone Cold/Mr. McMahon was the magic formula, not Austin by himself. There is no "what if". Because there was no logical possibility of the "if". People can retcon-fantasy-book until they're blue in the face, they're never going to make the parts fit for a realistic whole.
@cyrus2546Ай бұрын
Preach. The only mistake you made was the Austin/McMahon rivalry didn’t really start until the night after WrestleMania XIV. In January 1998 Austin did interrupt Tyson and McMahon in the ring but Vince didn’t begin trying to screw Austin until after WrestleMania. From September 1997 (when he first stuns Vince) until March 1998 Vince didn’t do anything against Steve Austin with two minor exceptions. First he tried to force Austin to defend the IC championship against Rock on Raw is War in December or forfeit it. Secondly is the final episode of Raw before WrestleMania when Austin is again forced to face Rock or else he would forfeit his WWF championship shot at WrestleMania. However in both these cases Vince doesn’t screw Austin or stack the deck unfairly against him. He simply forces him to face the Rock in singles matches. For all intents and purposes the Austin / McMahon rivalry began post-Mania when Vince, Brisco, Patterson and Slaughter became systematically trying to destroy Austin.

Other things aside, Steve is one of the best sports entertainers to share his passion & talent in any promotion he was in. It's no coincidence he had one of the best "intro" promos in E.C.W. (R.I.P.) & in the wwf with the birth of Austin 3:16. Another example of how blind the people "running" wcw were. He & Chris Candito (R.I.P.) seemingly didn't know what to do with their hair in their early yrs, but Steve figured it out well. Steve's 1st phase of the SC character was his best- he didn't care about the fans, his peers in the company, or anyone liking him, & told everybody off during his promos. A true anti-hero. The look in his eyes when he was on fire was chilling.
@fordid42Ай бұрын
Many don't realize that Steve was booed like crazy when he first started his Stone Cold run in 1996, he was a true heel, and his in-ring actions and promos solidified this. No one gave a damn about Ringmaster, but Stone Cold? Yeah, people did take notice of that at the start.

Watching early days Stone Cold Steve Austin circa 1996-97, or his Superstar Steve gimmick in ECW and contrasting that with modern Steve Austin is a sight to behold. You can tell how bitter and angry he was at getting canned from WCW, and he channeled al of that negative energy into his work and managed to turn it into main event talent. Going from a younger, bitter and jaded Steve who took the DTA motto to heart to the modern day, older and much calmer Steve who doesn’t seem to have any ambitions beyond podcasting, working his farm with his wife and drinking beer is in inspiration to us all imo.
@MrrynАй бұрын
In both real life and in kayfabe, it all makes sense. WCW lit a fire under a young man, made him jaded and angry, and he then spent over a decade taking it out on everyone who would or even could cross him or stop him. And once that fire burned out, he settled down and was able to, unlike after WCW, look back and actually have pride in what he accomplished.

Yes, Stone Cold Steve Austin did wrestle in Japan. He wrestled for New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) early in his career, before he became famous as "Stone Cold" From Football Field to Wrestling Ring: Before becoming a wrestling legend, Austin played college football at the University of North Texas. He even earned a scholarship to play linebacker. * The "Stone Cold" Persona: The iconic "Stone Cold" persona was born from a simple cup of tea. Vince McMahon, impressed by Austin's tough demeanor, suggested the name after seeing him drink a cup of "Stone Cold" tea. * The Iconic Stunner: Austin's finishing move, the Stunner, was originally called the "Ace Crusher" and was used by other wrestlers before him. He refined the move and made it his own, turning it into one of the most recognizable moves in wrestling history. * The Beer Basher: Austin's love for beer became a staple of his character. He would often drink beer during promos and matches, and even had his own beer brand, "Stone Cold Stunner Beer." * The Attitude Era Icon: Austin was the face of the Attitude Era, a period in WWE history known for its edgy and rebellious content. His clashes with Vince McMahon and The Rock helped define the era and drew record-breaking ratings. * The Three-Time Royal Rumble Winner: Austin is one of only two wrestlers to win the Royal Rumble match three times. He won the event in 1997, 1998, and 2001. * The Neck Injury: In 1997, Austin suffered a serious neck injury during a match with Owen Hart at SummerSlam. The injury forced him to retire from in-ring competition in 2003. * The WWE Hall of Famer: Austin was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2009. He is considered one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time and that's the bottom line Yes, Stone Cold Steve Austin did wrestle in Japan. Definitely. He wasn't going to do anything with Austin. I don't think you would have job them out, but he definitely wasn't seeing the title picture or main event feuds. The best he was going to let him do was probably another US run😂

S'Funny, the more I watch Austin's promo segments from 1995 on, he could have started "what" whenever he wanted to. His pauses in his promos were THAT natural. Like when he spoke, you felt like you HAD to listen or something was wrong with you.

One thing I’ll always appreacite about Paul Heyman was that he took his former client (Steve Austin) into his company when WCW failed to see his talent. And even though the pay was lousy,his brief time in ECW served as a catalyst for the Stone Cold character he’d become in WWF despite Vince’s failed efforts to reset him with that Ringmaster gimmick.

I remember watching "Superstar" Steve Austin in ECW when this happened. The long promo was one of the greatest promos ever if you ask me. His time in ECW was great even tho it was brief.

I loved Stunning Steve Austin in WCW. Unpopular Opinion: I liked him better in WCW than I did in WWF. (But he had to go to the WWF to get to the hights he hot to careerwise, so I completely understand). Same with Chris Jericho and Eddie Guerrero.

That was a great promo . I was getting cold feet about leaving my job at the end of February but I'm fired up to put my notice in now 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 genuinely couldn't have came at a better time

It's been years since I have seen these promos, and as much as Bischoff is my hero, I forgot how shockingly accurate Austin's impersonation was. Hahahaha. Eric did repeat himself A LOT in 1995 on Nitro, though he did tone it down a little bit going into 1996. WCW For Life.

I became a stage in this year and got to work backstage at w. W. E and it was like the coolest thing ever. I couldn't believe it and I was right next to Hayman. The man it was amazing

SCSA became unburdened by what had been in WCW.

Austin on his podcast has said he was actually considering Going To NJPW Or AJPW he went to see vince twice and vince mcmahon's suggestion was a mechanic gimmick even before the ringmaster gimmick.
