Brother Biz, you'll want to spend a LOT of time listening to Supertramp. Check Out the songs, "Take the Long Way Home," "School," "Bloody Well Right," "Give A Little Bit,""Even In The Quietest Moments," "Goodbye Stranger," "The Logical Song," and just about everything else they have done. I consider Supertramp to be the equal of Steely Dan for consistent quality and great songs.

Cant believe this was your pick for a first for Supertramp. You found a masterpiece among masterpieces. My favorite Supertramp song. The confusion of the album cover is because it is a best of album cover showing. The image is made up of different parts from all their album covers. "Bloody Well Right" is my next favorite, though there are a lot of good ones from this band.

Supertramp are masters of dynamics. Great prog rock band. Goodbye Stranger, The Logical Song, Take The Long Way Home, School, Fool's Overture, Crazy, If Everyone Was Listening, Crime Of The Century, Brother Where You Bound.... They have far too many great songs to list here, try one of the above, and go from there. Peace

@@stevemurrell6167 Rick Davies especially. When a kid, I thought the band all revolved around the pretty voice of Roger Hodgson. I had to go to go back to college to figure out that the special synergy involved in the group was a result of Rick. Rick is like a fish out of water when he isn't playing music. He seemed to genuinely love playing in support of Roger's songs. All those guys were genius stacked on top of genius. But genius can get in the way and be a distraction of creating beautiful music. Rick never hung around to discuss the issue of genius.

In the live shows(1979, 1999) they have a big screen behind the band and in the last few minutes of the song after the train station sound and the driving music begins the screen looks like you are seated on the very front of a train engine... and it starts moving and speeds up with the song. Like 100 mph. Everyone in audience gets hypnotized by this. At the very end, the climactic finish, the train is headed straight for a giant brick wall... but in the last meter before it hits the wall it slows suddenly to a stop... and everyone flies out of their seats into the row in front of them as is they were in that seat in real life with the brakes slammed on. Interesting psychological effect. I flew out of my seat in '79.. but in '99 I knew what would happen, so it only affected young people seeing Supertramp for the first time.

Great band. “The fucking instrumentation”, production, subtle theatrics (mostly thanks to Helliwell-probably the most orgasmic sax player of all time) and raw skill made / make them a hard band to match. Two sharply contrasted but great songwriters in this band…neither of them were as powerful on their own.

Yeah, Biz: saw them on their final tour- brilliance. There are some groups that just DON'T do bad songs. Zep, Floyd, Tull, Rush, Eurythmics, Jeff Beck, Jeff Healey, Eric Clapton... and Supertramp. And oddly, their best song was never issued by Supertramp- guitarist, keys, singer, writer Roger Hodgson released it after they broke up on his album of the same name- Hai Hai. Enjoy and peace from Canada- be safe.

Supertramp is in a world of their own. They are so diverse in their sound starting with their vocals and the groups musicians backing them up. Their album "Breakfast in America" came out in 1979 and was number one on the charts for 6 weeks. Two of their songs that are definitely my favorites are " Take the Long Way Home" and "Logical Song" and I could probably list at least a half dozen more. This group from England made quite an impact in the United States and the world.

Great Reaction. FYI the cover of the Greatest Hits album has photographic elements of several album themes, that's why it seems so trippy. If you were familiar with their catalog it would make more sense. For your next dive into Supertramp I'd recommend "School" from Crime of the Century. This is a fucking masterpiece, I used to sneak my brothers' 8 track of this when I was 7 and listen to it over and over again with his headphones. I didn't understand it cause I was a kid, but I knew it was important, and not just because it was beautiful music, but because it was haunting, and heavy, and deep and other worldly. And trust me when I say this, listening to this in the 70s when it was part of the culture was magical. Man I wish I was a kid again for a day, just to listen to this album over and over again, and maybe have some orange Kool Aid.

What a wonderful reaction! I remember the first time I heard Supertramp my mind blew too. Like Pink Floyd and Queen, two of my favourite bands, there was no way to predict these songs before hearing them. They keep on the edge of a moment. Everything is so unexpected, and yet it all comes together perfectly. Music from that era was very theatrical, and sound effects were common, and Supertramp used a lot of that really well. They were also great live. It was the same songs, just longer and fuller, with more solos.

I was blessed to see Supertramp on 2 tours, and during Rudy they would play a short black and white film on a big screen behind the stage, with scenes of train station, people boarding a train, with a camera in the front engine window and the train leaves the station, gradually the film speeds up, going faster and faster, timed to the music, then SUPER fast throughout the city and countryside of someplace I'd guess was in Europe, maybe the outskirts of London, and the film goes changes to color, with the color of the film randomly changing (high tech back then), then as the song climaxes, the train starts slowing back down to normal speed, as it enters another train station, and passengers get on and offs as the song ends, which perfectly matches the train station sounds and announcer you hear in the background. One of the most creative concert effects I'd seen up to that point in the late 70s. One of those peak experiences that gets imprinted onto your brain until you die.😍

Supertramp was formed in London, England in 1969. Their music was described as progressive rock and pop and relied heavily on Wurlitzer electric piano. They took their name from a novel by W.H. Davies called "The Autobiography of a Super Tramp". The most successful lineup of the band was Rick Davies (lead vocals, keyboards and harmonica; Roger Hodgson (lead vocals, guitar, bass guitar and keyboards); John Anthony Helliwell (saxophone, clarinet and keyboards); Dougie Thompson (bass guitar) and Bob Siebenberg (Bon C. Benberg) (drums). Some of their most popular songs include "Rudy"; "Blood Well Right"; "Goodbye Stranger"; "The Logical Song"; "Hide in Your Shell"; "Give a Little Bit"; "Dreamer"; "Take the Long Way Home" "Fool's Overture"

Several members play many different instruments in each song. The first time I saw them , it was for the “Crime of the Century “world tour”. They brought along a whole bunch of actors who acted out parts on stage as the songs were being played. They also had a huge round screen behind them, that played movie reels of old trains and other stuff to match the music. IT WAS AMAZING. 😮🎉

Dope epic shit! Trippy as fuck! Love it! It was fun watching this and hearing you. No trickery or fuckery here though. Just talent. Real musicians who can write instrumentation and lyrics , play instruments, arrange and produce good music overall. Your reaction to the tempo shifts and time signature changes is significant. It keeps you engaged mentally but you can't really dance to it but that is not really the point. It takes you on a journey doesn't it? To answer WTF is this, well it is simply something you like or don't like but if you are open minded to the journey the personal tastes are fluid and can grow or change. Some want to label or genre specify so this band is described as prog rock, art rock, prog pop but to me I just like it. When this song was performed live they had a video backdrop screen that had a train track seen from the perspective of the engine that was perfectly synced to the changing rhythms of the music in the section that speeds up towards the end. I am sure you can find it here on YT from the performance in Paris.

The cover you're looking at is from a greatest hits package and it's a mashup of the covers of two of their most popular albums - Breakfast in America and Crime of the Century. Both albums are well worth a full listen! Unlike most rock acts of the day, Supertramp was keyboard rather than guitar based. That's PART of what gave them their unique sound, along with their prog song structures and impeccable arrangements.

such an overlooked band. the musical and lyrical quality was UK's answer to Steely Dan. An elevated taste in musical structure and dynamics was required to 'grok' the soundscape at that time. So many influences mixed in an original influence envelope. These guys were a shock to US sensibilities and suffered the kind of FM radio smothering as with anything more advanced from Steely Dan than Rikki Don't Lose That Number. Commercialization of the sound was always the fear in fans. So, Supertramp was a musician's group and one of the most intelligent creative influences back then. Nice to see people will continue to listen to this music buried in the heads of advancingly old people. Supertramp will be wafting over the earphones in ships to Mars.

Anything from Super Tramp is fabulous. " School", " Hide in you Shell", really every song on " Crim of the Century" would be great. Then anything else. Enjoy

The cover art on the “best of” album is a mashup reference to the covers of two of Supertramp’s most popularly successful albums, “Crime of the Century” (which this track originally came from), and “Breakfast in America”, each of which had stunning and well thought out album art in their own right. My personal favourite Supertramp album is probably “Even in the Quietest Moments”, which also had some very striking cover art. Whether you love or hate the aural characteristics of analog vinyl records, and no matter how convenient it is today to enjoy hot and cold running digital music, it’s undeniable that LP sleeves provided a fantastic canvas for visual art creations to promote and augment the music being sold.

You need more? Well... they got more. A lot more. Pick any song from their most succesful albums "Crime of the Century" (1974) and "Breakfast in America" (1979) and you'll be amazed. Both album covers will also give you a clue about the cover of the greatest hits albums you just looked at and weren't sure what to make of it. And beyond those two albums: "Ain't nobody but me" (1975), "A Soapbox Opera" (1975), "Two of Us" (1975), "Give a little bit" (1977), "Even in the Quietest Moments" (1977), the epic "Fool's Overture" (1977), "Cannonball" (1985), "Better Days" (1985) and "Brother Where you Bound" (1985). The last three are from an album made after Roger Hodgson (the one with the high voice) had already left the band.
