I think Chod will be able to relate to the fact that Led Zeppelin was big during this time, and realize the big shadow they cast. I think Supertramp's "Breakfast in America" came out close to Zeppelin's "In Through the Outdoor".

Underrated because look what they have to go up against for radio play time . So many bands in the 70s were do great and radio play was a battlefield for bands . Numerous bands I myself didn't really discovery until I was older or if a friend had their albums . 70s bands were that good .

Anyway, back in the day, Supertramp "in concert", ranked up there with Pink Floyd, Yes, Rush, Genesis, Queen, Led Zeppelin, Billy Joel, The Grateful Dead etc. etc. AND etc. Supertramp were always "flawless" in a live setting.

In that last reaction you did, of 'School', I commented that you may have misunderstood what they mean by underrated. But now I get what you mean. I think it's the context you take it in. They weren't underrated within the many circles of rock fans, because they knew about them and loved the music. They just weren't as widely known or recognized as much as the bigger names in rock, for various reasons. Like one guy said, there were so many great progressive bands out of Britain, and the US had many good bands.

It's hard for me to understand why some say they were underrated. I was in my 20's and 30's when they were really popular. They were one of my absolute favorite bands back then. It's really great to see someone new appreciating their talent so many decades later. ❤️👍

I think the underrated tag is simply based on the fact that their overall popularity and visibility over time has not been proportional to their quality by comparison to some other groups. I was a Supertramp junkie through teenage and college years but have always been surprised by how many people I have met since who have never heard of them or have heard of them but never got around to listening. And yes they have a whole bunch of songs that make you want to drive around the block one more time to allow it to finish.

Finally, someone who sees it the way it really was and still is ! I guess these people think just because a band does not have a song in the top ten on the charts it makes them underrated lol. Supertramp were never underrated and never will be. They were very popular in the 70’s and 80’s. They were a common household name when it came to good music. Critics at the time considered them to be musical geniuses. The history of the band speaks for itself….hit after hit after hit. The original band members must frown and look dazed and confused when they see fans write that they were underrated. I chuckle every time I see those comments.

I was a fan of Supertramp back in the day, owning three of their records, Crime, Crisis and Breakfast, though I am familiar with the first two albums too. It's pleasing that their music still feels fresh and relevant today. I suppose that's down to the songwriting, the musicianship, arrangements and innovative transitions and seamless surprise turns in their songs. As to why they are underrated. They weren't seen as a "cool" band back in the day. If you admitted to liking Supertramp you could foresee the next ten years of your social life disappearing down a dark hole. They didn't have a front man. No Plant, Jagger, Daltrey etc and they were a band with a geeky image. That kind of stuff never bothered me, that's why I'm the well rounded individual you see before you, but some listeners don't want to know unless a band has a considerable degree of street cred.

This is my favorite Supertramp song, too. Beautiful and melancholy. From 1979 . So real for so many at some point in their lives, unfortunately. Love the harmonica. And the vocals/lyrics. “Just Another Nervous Wreck” is another good one, as is “Dreamer.” “Goodbye Stranger,” “The Logical Song,” and many others. Those were the days - unmatched variety, creativity, and quality of songwriting and production. Miss it, dearly.

"Breakfast In America" was another big hit from Supertramp. Maybe their biggest. Definitively a great song. Supertramp are music magicians in my opinion, it seems like they could make their music sound like everything with a snap of their fingers.

Back in the day if you went to a audio store to buy a stereo system Supertramp was the band the staff would play because the audio quality was state of the art and the music was impeccable.. along with Steely Dan of course... you need to hit some Steely Dan brother.. you will be amazed.

You should check out this lady Eivor and this song is just magic, Eivor Falling Free live at the Old Theater in Torshavn. Eivør Pálsdóttir, known professionally as Eivør, is a Faroese singer-songwriter with a distinctive voice and a wide range of interests in various music genres spanning rock, jazz, folk, pop, and European classical music. Despite having many Top 10 hits off this album, this was the same year that Pink Floyd's The Wall, AC/DC's Highway to Hell and Led Zeppelin's In Through the Out Door (just to name a few) were all released. Personally, as long as I could keep Comfortably Numb, I'd give up The Wall and In Through the Out Door (and Zeppelin is my favorite band, I just like the older stuff more) for Breakfast in America because it really is that good.

Love you played in the band and have a strong musical background (bring in some jazz reactions!) Supertramp are great musicians. LOVE their music, not surprised you are digging them! For GREAT musicianship you should dig deeper into Genesis and Phil Collins. They have so much to offer (MUCH more that 'I can't Dance'). The more you listen the more you hear. Peter Gabriel too, as he started out with Genesis and Phil.

I like to say that this song is defiantly happy. The music is so catchy and bouncy that you're can't be sad listening to it, but the lyrics kinda go against that. And kinda go with it at the same time. "You're the joke of the neighborhood. Why should you care if you're feeling good?" Etc. They run through all these things that could be wrong with your life, but hey, just take some me time, bop to this awesome happy tune, and take the long way home. It'll be okay.

This is a deep deep rabbit hole as they are one of those bands that don’t really do ‘bad’ tracks at least not in their golden phase between 1974 and 1982. The first two albums are a little patchy as they found their feet as a band but from ‘Crime of the century’ 1974-to ‘Famous last words’ 1982 it’s all pure gold. The first album without Roger Hodgson ,’Brother where you bound’ 1985 is good but something had been lost and the band was definitely at its best with both Rodger and Rick Davies sparking off one another.

The trouble was…..their songs were long. Back then, “radio” play was 3 minutes. Very few songs over 3-4 minutes got very much play. A few FM stations would play 7+ minute songs and occasionally an album, but not very often. You went out and bought the LP, if you could find it.

Well, this album in particular was not underappreciated - 4 hits songs, #1 album for 6 weeks and it won 2 Grammys. Lots of great stuff there and on older albums. If you want to go off the board for a great song on this album that WASNT a hit, check out “Child of Vision”.

Roger Hodgson (lead singer on this song...Rick Davies is the other) left the group in '83 and plays concerts with his own band. He opens every show with this song. Under rated? People who take the time to really listen become diehard fans. They seemed to be judged by their singles but anyone who sits down and listens to each entire album (I'm a vinyl guy) becomes hooked. Try "Rudy" (Davies lead vocal); studio version is best; only play a "live" version if it is from 1980 album "Paris". The parts where Davies sings a line and Hodgson answers back lyrically are brilliant!
